A Genie and a Goddess Walk Into A Bar... [Complete]
Character(s): Urd, Genie
Content: Urd goes house hunting and hangs out with Genie
Setting: ...kind of all over the place?
Time: Afternoon, Week 6
Warnings: None!
High above the roofs of the city's buildings, Urd floated in place. She was nearly touching the intricately painted and engineered dome sky. She scanned the streets and houses below before lowering her altitude slightly, flying forward.
Where would be a good place to set up a home away from home? She wanted to be in the heart of all the action, but the action seemed spread throughout the city. It was a shame she couldn't live up here somehow. She'd be able to keep her eye on everything that way.
Urd smiled to herself, long white hair streaming out behind her as she flew. A tall building would do. Perhaps one of the more expensive looking hotels? Even without any faux foliage or real money, she had confidence enough in charming her way in. And she could always lie a little...if she really wanted.
And if she found herself next to some of the interesting people she'd already come across over the journals, that would be even better.

He soared through the sky, looking down at the city in thought. It looked so peaceful from such a feat. Of course, one could say that about anything really, but there was definitely a rare beauty that one could see from the sky. From the tallest tree to the smallest rose, the way the hand woven plant life shone in the light was simply mesmerizing. Genie couldn’t help but take a picture of this, knowing that of all places he had visited in the world, Paixao would take up the largest portion of his vacation scrapbook.
Funny, he had always imagined it to be Disney World. Ah, well. What was life without a few surprises? Genie chuckled to himself at the thought, putting his camera away before something caught his attention. He had almost missed it, catching it just barely from the corner of his eye. When he turned to get a better look, he couldn’t help but stare: he wasn’t the only one in the sky today.
At first Genie mistook the woman for having her life in jeopardy. He thought she was falling, or that she’d somehow been tied to the roof of the dome. Upon closer inspection however, he was thankful to find such was not the case. In fact, this woman actually looked familiar. He flew up toward her curiously.
“I never thought I’d see the day where I’d actually have company up here!”

She lowered slightly to greet him, hair floating and curling around her as if she were underwater. "You must be Genie?" She tilted her head, eyeing the man up and down. The power that radiated off of him was amazing, as if he were created from pure magic. Perhaps she should have been wary of him, having no way to be certain that he didn't abuse the power he had, but there was just something about him that made her trust him.

“Just out sightseeing?” asked the enchanted spirit, circling Urd excitedly. “I was just doing a little myself. The view up here is gorgeous, the stuff you see on postcards. Though, I’m not sure exactly dazzling it is compared to you now that you’re here.” He said with a wink.
no subject
She leaned back to recline on pure air, arms crossed behind her head. "I was scoping out a place to live while I'm here. You're right, of course; the view up here is really something. I thought I'd see if something caught my eye." And something did, but it certainly wasn't a place to live.

“Are the genies troublesome where you come from?” he asked, looking down at the city bellow them in thought. “I’d be delighted to help you find a suitable place to stay. After all, I helped Merlin find somewhere. I’m sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble to find you one. Paixao has plenty of housing facilities to offer. Were there any particular qualities you were looking for in your new home?”
no subject
She glided toward him, her enigmatic look turning to one of challenging mischief. "I would love your help. But first...it's been so long since I've met a being I didn't already have knowledge about. I'd like to see how our powers stack up..."
She draped an arm around his big blue shoulders and batted her eyes. "Care to race?"
no subject
He watched as she approached him, raising an inquisitive brow at her words. His cheeks grew hot when she draped her arm around him, and those eyes… Oh my. No one ever spoke to him like this. Genie was practically at a loss of words. He was, however, sure a genie’s powers were no match compared to a goddess’.
“Race?” he repeated, swallowing the forming lump in his throat. She wanted to race did she? Looking at Urd for a moment in surprise, a smile slowly spread across his lips. Alright, he was game. “What are the limitations?”
no subject
Tan bare arms accessorized by silver bracelets suddenly encircled Genie's neck gently from behind as Urd leaned against him, her lips by his elfin ear. "No teleportation," she murmured playfully, a chuckle underlying her smoky voice. As soon as she'd been there, she was gone again, appearing before him once more.
She held up two fingers. "Rule number two?" With a puff of white smoke, a hundred mini versions of Urd appeared around Genie, all about the size of a rat. "No making copies of yourself!" the mini Urds chimed as one in high pitched voices before disappearing into little puffs of smoke like the big version had.
When the smoke cleared, Urd floated before Genie once more, one arm hugging her torso under her chest as her other hand held up three fingers. "Rule number three?" She laughed, tossing back her hair. "Goddesses go first!"
And before the djinn could respond, she was speeding away, her joyous laughter ringing through the sky.
no subject
Left in what would have been her dust on the ground Genie continued to levitate in silence for a moment after the goddess had disappeared before suddenly coming back to life. He could only think of one thing to say: “Whoa, what a woman!”
Giving out a long, loud howl, the djinn summoned a giant red firework underneath him. He lit it instantly with a match, only waiting a brief moment or two before shooting off after the goddess. Once he’d managed to catch up to her he released his hold of the firework, causing it fly past the two and explode into a brilliant combination of blue and purple.
“You forgot to mention where the finish line was!” he called out to Urd as they passed through the rain of colours.
no subject
"The finish line is where we started, handsome! All the way around!" she called back, stretching her arms in front of her in the classic Superman pose as if that would make her go faster. She could already tell she was going to lose the race if she didn't pull out all the stops, though.
World of Elegance, she summoned silently as the tops of buildings blurred below them. Help me out! As Genie pulled ahead, a faint glow surrounded Urd and a burst of feathers exploded from her back. With her angel's assistance, her speed picked up until she was slightly ahead of the djinn. From her back, a faint outline of dual-colored angel wings could be discerned before fading completely.
no subject
It was then he noticed the goddess had fallen back. He glanced behind him, curious as to what had held her back, but in that time suddenly found her race past him with an elegant pair of wings extending from her back. The djinn eyed them with interest while he could; trying to determine the extent of Urd’s summoning ability. He’d have to come up with something clever to keep up with her.
He rubbed his chin thoughtfully, snapping his fingers together when an idea sparked. If she could cheat, he certainly could too. Genie grinned as he spat into his palms and rubbed his hands together. A cloud of blue smoke engulfed him, as it was his turn to fall back. He did not stay there long however, for he quickly flew out of the smoke riding in a little fishing boat. With the little outboard motor doing a majority of the work, all Genie had to do was effortlessly steer the enchanted boat next to Urd. He said not a word to her, but his expression said all: bring it, girlfriend.
no subject
"Guh?" she managed to call out, her usual eloquence lost. The look he gave her, coupled with the sheer presence of the boat in the sky next to her made her burst into laughter again. "You cheeky bastard!" she cried in mock anger, though the flushed cheeks, sparkling eyes and huge grin were a sign of great amusement and pleasure. "Boats need a permit!"
Her laughter was suddenly broken off and Urd began to plummet like a stone towards the streets below.
no subject
On the other hand, another part of him felt concern for her safety. Even if it was an act, it looked bad for him to leave her falling. And if it wasn’t an act and she truly was in trouble? Why, that was even worse! He winced at the thought.
He didn’t have much of a choice now did he?
Without a second thought, the genie leapt from his boat and after Urd. He fiercely pushed himself to fly as fast as he could, holding an anvil to weigh him down. Once he felt he had gained a considerable distance that he could catch her in, he dropped the anvil and flew in to try and catch the goddess.
no subject
She opened her eyes to see Genie coming after her and had to smile. What a sweetheart he was turning out to be! It was enough of a morale booster to dig down deep and summon enough energy to slow her descent enough for the djinn to catch up.
She stretched out her hand for him to take. "M-my hero!" she meant to call out casually, but it ended up being little more than a whisper.
no subject
Gently taking her hand, he pulled her into his arms and quickly flew to the ground. There he placed her down and examined her worriedly. “Urd," he asked, giving her shoulders a soft shake. "can you hear me? Are you alright? How many fingers am I holding up?” he continued, wearing a large foam hand advertising that a certain baseball team were number one in the state.
no subject
"D-do you think you could get me some kind of alcohol?" she asked, face slightly flushed. "I'll pay you back?" She really was mortified. She wanted to impress the djinn, though she couldn't say why.
no subject
He didn’t say anything at first, surprised by the goddesses actions, then smiled at her. “No, no. I understand perfectly. No need to be embarrassed, it happens even to the best of us.” Genie replied, helping her down to the ground. He wasn’t sure if she was quite ready to stand on her own just yet, but allowed her without protest. Instead, he simply summoned a pair of knee guards on her in the event that she did fall that she did not scrape them. He did not end up regretting this decision.
Flying down to her side attentively after she had slumped down onto her knees, he listened to goddesses’ request. Both brows manage to shoot up this time, undoubtedly surprised by her question. Of all things, why would she want liquor? He continued to look at her, baffled as she assured him that she would repay him. Normally he would never approve such a thing, but he imagined it held some sort of significance to her current state.
“Very well!” he replied, suddenly appearing in formal wear behind a mini-bar. “I have to warn you though; I haven’t had much practise at this over the last ten thousand years. I might be a liiiiiittle rusty. Of course, this will give me plenty of practise for Al’s bachelor party.” The genie shook his drink shaker thoughtfully before coming to a halt. “But we could always go to a bar instead if you prefer?”
no subject
She smiled in amused self-deprecation. "It figures I'd get the adults only option." She leaned over a bit, resting one arm on the counter under her chest and tugged playfully on the lapel of Genie's summoned clothes. "You look good in a tux."
no subject
“I supposed there are some sacrifices you have to make.” The djinn replied, tossing the shaker under his arm and over his shoulder. There he caught it on his forearm, only to flip it back into the air and catch it in his palm. “Those doesn’t sound too awfully bad to me though.” He continued, popping open the lid to pour another ingredient in. The bottle of added content lay tucked in place between his neck and shoulder as he bowed before rolling down his arm and back onto the bar. He gave the shaker another quick toss, if only to show off.
It only lasted a moment or two, Urd’s unexpected contact surprising Genie. The shaker that had previously been seen spinning on his wrist could now be heard clanking against the pavement after suddenly flying from his hand. “Oops!” His cheeks turned a rosy red at this, causing him to quickly summon the goddess a simple martini opposed to the concoction he had been cooking up and push it toward Urd as he looked away bashfully.
no subject
She curled her fingers around the stem of the martini and lifted it to her lips, winking at her blue (and now also charmingly pink) friend. "Thank you, Genie," she chuckled before tipping the drink back and draining it without batting an eye. She sighed in deep satisfaction when she was done, placing the empty glass on the counter. "Ahh, so good," she murmured. In truth, her color was already back to normal.
She leaned on the counter again, head tilted slightly as she gazed at Genie again with a put upon expression. "It must be nice to have an unlimited amount of magic, unrestricted, without any rules or regulations."
no subject
“Ah, thank you. Good to see you looking better so soon. If only that stuff worked like that for everyone – everyone over the respectable age to drink, I mean.” The djinn smiled, pleased to hear the drink had met her approval. “And don’t worry, it was really my fault. Definitely need more practise.”
He paused for a moment, noticing the look the goddess had given him from the corner of his eye. His suspicions of her thoughts were quickly confirmed when she spoke. Genie found himself, for the first time with Urd, not surprised by her words. He predicted such a subject would arise, at least part of it, anyway. A meek smile appeared on his lips.
“I suppose.” He replied, looking past Urd for a moment in thought. “Power isn’t everything though. Fame, fortune, they’re not always necessary. A beggar could be twice as happy as a king, if not more so.” The genie leaned against the counter as well, eyeing the goddess suspiciously. “You do realize the universe is ruled by law though, right? Everything -if not everyone- is bound by something. I have rules to follow just like everyone else... I'm not a bad boy if that's what you were hoping for. Stripes do NOT look good on me. I mean, HELLO! That is SO last fall. It's all about bright and bold now.”
Appearing in a striped prison uniform before Urd, he rattled the chains to his handcuffs in front of her face in frustration.
no subject
She sighed, leaning back on the stool so far that gravity would pull down a normal person, her arms behind her head. She closed her eyes, a mock look of resignation on her face. "My race is bogged down by rules and laws. A god's powers unchecked could destroy the world and unravel reality, so a complicated and tiresome system of checks and balances is in effect." She opened her eyes partly, watching Genie with a mix of admiration and wistfulness. "No, you're not a bad boy. And I'm definitely not the girl next door. I suppose I should be grateful for the laws I have to follow, or who knows what I'd do?"
no subject
He brought his hands back in front of his own face, looking curiously at his now bare wrists (save for his golden ‘shackles’; a memento of his previous life) before glancing back at Urd with interest. The rest of his prison uniform disappeared shortly after. He tapped his finger against his lips in thought before replying to her, considering the mentioned system. It sounded like a lot of work to keep up, but definitely worth it if it truly did maintain balance.
“Makes sense. Too bad it didn’t work the same with all potential threats. You know witches, genies, sorcerers, other gods… I can think of quite a few who’d be in some serious trouble. Who are in serious trouble.” Genie folded his arms across his chest and frowned. “As for you, I don’t want to think of the sort of trouble you could get into.” He added, teasingly.
no subject
She was staring at him, she realized with a jolt. She lowered her head, voice taking a serious tone. "Genie...? Can I ask something of you that may be a burden to you?"
no subject
He continued to look at Urd attentively, raising a brow when he noticed she was starting to stare at him. At first he suspected he had grown a third eye (it had happened before), but felt nothing when he brought his hand to his forehead for a second time. Genie wondered what she was thinking and soon what ‘burden’ she wished to share which called for such seriousness.
“What is it you wish of me?” the djinn asked jokingly but most curious than anything else. “I can’t manipulate the rules you follow if that’s what you’re wondering.”
no subject
Another pause, and when she spoke next, there was a hint of some unexpressed emotion in her voice...fear or anger or sadness, it was hard to discern. "It may never happen; probably never will, but...if there comes a time when I'm corrupted, when I've been turned to the darkness, you're the only one in this city who could stop me, I think." She lifted her gaze to his again, the mask of calm composure slipping around the edges. "Please...please, do everything you can to stop me if that happens. I don't want to hurt anyone, I don't want to..." She couldn't finish the sentence. Instead, she rushed on. "I can be sealed into items by high level magic -- would you do that for me?"
She was asking so much, she knew, of a person she'd only just met. As far as social guidelines went, the goddess had committed a faux pas, revealing more of her worries and fears than she should. And, truthfully, she was worried she'd put him off for good, made him uncomfortable to the point where he'd want to stay away. She could only hope the kindness and power she felt from him would be enough to preserve their fledgling friendship.
no subject
“You’re worried about a little thing like that?” he asked, casually leaning against the bar. “A goddess of infinite knowledge and astronomical power over the course of thousands of years compared to those of a mere forty years at the most? Urd, I thought you had more confidence than that!” Leaning over the bar, the djinn placed his hand on top of the goddesses. The other he placed against her cheek tenderly while he assured her more seriously. “Besides, that wouldn’t happen. I won’t let it. You’ll be okay, I promise.”
no subject
Infinite knowledge? Hardly. But she truly believed the djinn's words, had confidence in him if not herself. She opened her eyes again and grinned. "Well, enough of all that." She leaned forward as well, one eyebrow raised, back to the cocky and flirtatious woman she was known to be. "We'll have to take a raincheck on that race. I'll beat you one day, though...so prepare yourself!"
no subject
Finding himself oddly uncomfortable, Genie pushed himself away from the woman as she drew near. “I look forward to it!” he replied cheerfully, wiping off the bar counter with a clean cloth. “By then I should have myself a new pair of Nikes. Let’s see you try and keep up with me then.”
no subject
She laughed and turned on the stool, jumping off of it lightly. She landed with her back to the djinn, her sundry jewelry making a small, wind chime-like noise, her hair briefly floating around her before it settled once more. Genie couldn't see Urd briefly touch her cheek where he'd touched her, her face curious and slightly flushed.
After a few seconds, she turned back to face him, one hand on her hip, the other haughtily flipping her hair off her shoulder. "So! What would your recommendations be for living quarters around here?" She tilted her head, one eyebrow raised. "Where do you stay? Not a lamp...right?"
no subject
“An ace, hu?” he asked, the bar finally disappearing in a cloud of smoke, as well as his tux. “That wouldn’t be the ‘goddesses go first’ rule, would it?” A grin spread across his face as he approached her, curious as to what she had in mind for the future. He was surprised when she turned to face him, but continued to share a toothy grin regardless.
“Oh, no. Not anymore. I’m trying to support Paixao by paying to stay in a hotel, as well as all the other places I stayed during my vacation so far. I’m considering buying an apartment, seeing as I’ll be here awhile, but I haven’t quite looked into that just yet.” The djinn summoned a clipboard and pair of reading glasses, licking the pencil that also appeared in his hand before he brought it down on the paper. “But this is about you! I want to hear what YOU want! What are you looking for, any particular requirements? What’s our price range? Do we need it by any schools or daycares? Details, details!”
no subject
"I want to be near a lot of people," she said, folding her arms and walking in a circle around Genie, thoughtful. "It'd be easier for me to protect them...not that they need my protection, necessarily. There are some extraordinary mortals around here, I've found." She stopped, glancing at Genie over her shoulder. "And it needs be by a bar, naturally!"
She continued her pacing, arms behind her back now. "Money's no option...high end apartments or crumbling slums, I don't mind. I'll do my own interior decorating regardless..." She stopped again, smiling at the djinn. "I wouldn't mind living by you either, of course."
no subject
The genie nodded, scribbling down Urd’s necessities as he heard them. It was difficult to predict the area of the city with the most inhabitants, something Genie ultimately predicted in the end. He looked back at the goddess behind his shoulder to check if he had listed everything correctly so far when he felt her presence behind him, repeating everything he had written.
“Large inhabitants, friendly neighbourhood, within walking distance of a bar. I put you down for two bedrooms at the least. Your vague price range leads me to many possible listings, regardless of your two biggest requirements but I think I can narrow it down.” He turned to face the goddess on this note to hear her thoughts on this, but was surprised by her following words. The led to his pencil snapped against his clipboard.
“Me?” Genie asked, pointing to himself questioningly as he sank to the ground “No one’s ever really wanted to live around me before. I… You wouldn’t… You’re not playing me here, are you?”
no subject
"I like you a lot, Genie," she continued quietly. "You're fun to be around. The majority of my race are so caught up in the importance of their tasks and powers that they forget what joy it is simply to be." Her smile grew wider and she ducked her head, absently fiddling with a lock of long white hair. "It'd be nice to be around someone who can keep up with me," she chuckled, her voice teasing as she glanced back up at him.
no subject
Flying into the air, the djinn pull down a white screen that levitated in the air in front of Urd and flicked on the projector behind her. Without adjusting the lighting within the dome, it revealed a beautiful map of Paixao. Genie approached the image with a meter stick in hand and pointed to the west side of the image.
“Here we have the Cheap Prayer; a very dark tavern lit only by the candles on the tables. To my knowledge, the food is exquisite! Beside it we find Iriela Apartments. Said to be owned by gypsies, they offer a low price for an all too shabby room. Some things are better worn in, however. On the other side, just North of the tavern, we find Haja o Que Houver.” He continued, sliding his pointer to the hotels location. “This family owned hotel offers its guests the pleasure of dining within the hotel itself with its very own restaurant which is ALWAYS full of activity. The Cheap Prayer itself is a little ‘run down’ as some call it. There is also another bar called the Wild Ginger East of the city which you may find a little more appropriate.”
no subject
Quietly clearing her throat to collect herself, she stood and levitated up, crossing her arms and appraising the map. "Gypsies...? That might be interesting. They might have some necessary ingredients for my alchemy." She nodded to herself. "Iriela Apartments...I feel like that's where I should be." She turned to Genie, eyebrow arched.
"What do you think?"
no subject
Pausing for a moment, Genie tapped his chin in though. “I don’t suppose you know how to get to Iriela Apartments from here, do you?”
no subject
She began to slowly levitate upwards. Placing two fingers to her lips, she kissed her fingertips and pointed them at the djinn. "See you around, handsome!" she called before vanishing completely, the only indication that she'd been there at all being the twinkling sound of her jewelry and the subtle scent of perfume.
