A Genie and a Goddess Walk Into A Bar... [Complete]

Character(s): Urd, Genie
Content: Urd goes house hunting and hangs out with Genie
Setting: ...kind of all over the place?
Time: Afternoon, Week 6
Warnings: None!

High above the roofs of the city's buildings, Urd floated in place. She was nearly touching the intricately painted and engineered dome sky. She scanned the streets and houses below before lowering her altitude slightly, flying forward.

Where would be a good place to set up a home away from home? She wanted to be in the heart of all the action, but the action seemed spread throughout the city. It was a shame she couldn't live up here somehow. She'd be able to keep her eye on everything that way.

Urd smiled to herself, long white hair streaming out behind her as she flew. A tall building would do. Perhaps one of the more expensive looking hotels? Even without any faux foliage or real money, she had confidence enough in charming her way in. And she could always lie a little...if she really wanted.

And if she found herself next to some of the interesting people she'd already come across over the journals, that would be even better.

It had been a surprisingly quiet afternoon for Genie. He had woken up, gone out for breakfast, walked through the park to feed the pidgins, remembered halfway through the park there were no pidgins, spoken with the what few citizens would with him in exchange for his breadcrumbs, then took to the skies. The jinni did not have a particular destination in mind for his flight; it had simply been for pure enjoyment of getting off the ground.

He soared through the sky, looking down at the city in thought. It looked so peaceful from such a feat. Of course, one could say that about anything really, but there was definitely a rare beauty that one could see from the sky. From the tallest tree to the smallest rose, the way the hand woven plant life shone in the light was simply mesmerizing. Genie couldn’t help but take a picture of this, knowing that of all places he had visited in the world, Paixao would take up the largest portion of his vacation scrapbook.

Funny, he had always imagined it to be Disney World. Ah, well. What was life without a few surprises? Genie chuckled to himself at the thought, putting his camera away before something caught his attention. He had almost missed it, catching it just barely from the corner of his eye. When he turned to get a better look, he couldn’t help but stare: he wasn’t the only one in the sky today.

At first Genie mistook the woman for having her life in jeopardy. He thought she was falling, or that she’d somehow been tied to the roof of the dome. Upon closer inspection however, he was thankful to find such was not the case. In fact, this woman actually looked familiar. He flew up toward her curiously.

“I never thought I’d see the day where I’d actually have company up here!”

"That's me!" he replied proudly, offering his blue hand for a handshake. “Urd, am I right?” Genie shared a warm smile with the goddess, oblivious to her caution and suspicion. He never imagined himself to be intimidating or very threatening to anyone other than one of villainous intent, but he was sure at least once he’d come off as a rather daunting spectacle. Be it his tremendous power, outgoing personality, or perhaps something else… He wasn’t sure, but he didn’t dwell on it either.

“Just out sightseeing?” asked the enchanted spirit, circling Urd excitedly. “I was just doing a little myself. The view up here is gorgeous, the stuff you see on postcards. Though, I’m not sure exactly dazzling it is compared to you now that you’re here.” He said with a wink.

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
“What can I say? I’m one of a kind. I haven’t met very many genies in my own world, but of those I have I can tell you there are some pretty nasty –and ugly- ones out there. They’re the ones you hope to see trapped in a lamp for eternity. Ah ha, well…” Genie rubbed the back of his neck, flattered by Urd’s words but also embarrassed his own. It wasn’t often he thought so harshly of an individual, in this case being Jafar. He hadn’t expected to see him again since he had thrown him into the Cave of Wonders.

“Are the genies troublesome where you come from?” he asked, looking down at the city bellow them in thought. “I’d be delighted to help you find a suitable place to stay. After all, I helped Merlin find somewhere. I’m sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble to find you one. Paixao has plenty of housing facilities to offer. Were there any particular qualities you were looking for in your new home?”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Genie didn’t like to think of himself as a demon, but he knew many considered him such. He also knew well of a djinns ability to make their master suffer. It didn’t surprise him, especially when so many genies suffered themselves. He had never intentionally caused any of his own previous master’s grief, but many had suffered for their greed. The djinn said nothing of this however, he simply nodded his head. “I’m all for happiness, none of this misery business.”

He watched as she approached him, raising an inquisitive brow at her words. His cheeks grew hot when she draped her arm around him, and those eyes… Oh my. No one ever spoke to him like this. Genie was practically at a loss of words. He was, however, sure a genie’s powers were no match compared to a goddess’.

“Race?” he repeated, swallowing the forming lump in his throat. She wanted to race did she? Looking at Urd for a moment in surprise, a smile slowly spread across his lips. Alright, he was game. “What are the limitations?”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well now, Urd was just full of surprises. He really hadn’t expected any of this. Usually he was the one to put on such a display, not his company. He wasn’t quite sure how to react. None of the goddesses he had ever met had revealed such abilities, did they all possess them? He watched the woman speechlessly as she explained the rules to their little race, curious as to what else she was capable of. They were but minor tricks to him, but that didn’t make them any less impressive.

Left in what would have been her dust on the ground Genie continued to levitate in silence for a moment after the goddess had disappeared before suddenly coming back to life. He could only think of one thing to say: “Whoa, what a woman!”

Giving out a long, loud howl, the djinn summoned a giant red firework underneath him. He lit it instantly with a match, only waiting a brief moment or two before shooting off after the goddess. Once he’d managed to catch up to her he released his hold of the firework, causing it fly past the two and explode into a brilliant combination of blue and purple.

“You forgot to mention where the finish line was!” he called out to Urd as they passed through the rain of colours.

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Genie laughed at Urd’s pose, shortly after finding himself pondering who would reign victor if Superman were to join their challenge. It was a difficult call, especially when Superman travelled as fast as a shooting bullet – or was it that he could catch a shooting bullet? Now he couldn’t remember. Both implied speed however and that convinced him the superhero would be challenge enough.

It was then he noticed the goddess had fallen back. He glanced behind him, curious as to what had held her back, but in that time suddenly found her race past him with an elegant pair of wings extending from her back. The djinn eyed them with interest while he could; trying to determine the extent of Urd’s summoning ability. He’d have to come up with something clever to keep up with her.

He rubbed his chin thoughtfully, snapping his fingers together when an idea sparked. If she could cheat, he certainly could too. Genie grinned as he spat into his palms and rubbed his hands together. A cloud of blue smoke engulfed him, as it was his turn to fall back. He did not stay there long however, for he quickly flew out of the smoke riding in a little fishing boat. With the little outboard motor doing a majority of the work, all Genie had to do was effortlessly steer the enchanted boat next to Urd. He said not a word to her, but his expression said all: bring it, girlfriend.

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
One minute she was laughing, the next she was falling. Genie wasn’t sure what to make of it. He watched her plummet to the ground, slowly slowing the boat to a stop. Part of him suspected the entire thing of being merely an act on her part. The moment he stopped and flew after her she would take off ahead of him and fall in lead again.

On the other hand, another part of him felt concern for her safety. Even if it was an act, it looked bad for him to leave her falling. And if it wasn’t an act and she truly was in trouble? Why, that was even worse! He winced at the thought.

He didn’t have much of a choice now did he?

Without a second thought, the genie leapt from his boat and after Urd. He fiercely pushed himself to fly as fast as he could, holding an anvil to weigh him down. Once he felt he had gained a considerable distance that he could catch her in, he dropped the anvil and flew in to try and catch the goddess.

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
She sounded weak. Somehow she must have managed to drain all her energy. He hoped it hadn’t all been from their race, that’d of made him feel incredibly guilty, regardless that it hadn’t been his idea to begin with. Genie frowned at the thought, wishing he hadn’t pushed the goddess to such an extent. The firework and boat had been too much. And to think he had been planning to summon a jet plane next! He shook his head, as though to clear the thought.

Gently taking her hand, he pulled her into his arms and quickly flew to the ground. There he placed her down and examined her worriedly. “Urd," he asked, giving her shoulders a soft shake. "can you hear me? Are you alright? How many fingers am I holding up?” he continued, wearing a large foam hand advertising that a certain baseball team were number one in the state.

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Genie looked between his glove and Urd for a moment, then laughed. He had purchased the thing from a junior’s game, having barely for the glove itself, never mind peanuts. She was right though, the team must been defeated by now - if it even existed anymore. He had bought the thing in 1962, unknowingly that he would end up keeping it for such an extended period of time. It always seemed to happen with the strangest of possessions; a wild boar skull, a stuffed armadillo, and a plant that held a strong resemblance to Audrey, the monstrous plant from Little Shop of Horrors.

He didn’t say anything at first, surprised by the goddesses actions, then smiled at her. “No, no. I understand perfectly. No need to be embarrassed, it happens even to the best of us.” Genie replied, helping her down to the ground. He wasn’t sure if she was quite ready to stand on her own just yet, but allowed her without protest. Instead, he simply summoned a pair of knee guards on her in the event that she did fall that she did not scrape them. He did not end up regretting this decision.

Flying down to her side attentively after she had slumped down onto her knees, he listened to goddesses’ request. Both brows manage to shoot up this time, undoubtedly surprised by her question. Of all things, why would she want liquor? He continued to look at her, baffled as she assured him that she would repay him. Normally he would never approve such a thing, but he imagined it held some sort of significance to her current state.

“Very well!” he replied, suddenly appearing in formal wear behind a mini-bar. “I have to warn you though; I haven’t had much practise at this over the last ten thousand years. I might be a liiiiiittle rusty. Of course, this will give me plenty of practise for Al’s bachelor party.” The genie shook his drink shaker thoughtfully before coming to a halt. “But we could always go to a bar instead if you prefer?”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so that explained it. He had always wondered how a god’s power worked. Who knew it was so simple? Or at least the principle behind it. Genie always assumed a god was granted access to limitless power; the only way to alter this was with some sort of enchanted item. However, now that he thought about it, the theory seemed more suitable for a vampire than a god. How silly, the idea of garlic or a cross against a god. He laughed at the thought, as he did when it came with regaining energy through ice cream and alcohol.

“I supposed there are some sacrifices you have to make.” The djinn replied, tossing the shaker under his arm and over his shoulder. There he caught it on his forearm, only to flip it back into the air and catch it in his palm. “Those doesn’t sound too awfully bad to me though.” He continued, popping open the lid to pour another ingredient in. The bottle of added content lay tucked in place between his neck and shoulder as he bowed before rolling down his arm and back onto the bar. He gave the shaker another quick toss, if only to show off.

It only lasted a moment or two, Urd’s unexpected contact surprising Genie. The shaker that had previously been seen spinning on his wrist could now be heard clanking against the pavement after suddenly flying from his hand. “Oops!” His cheeks turned a rosy red at this, causing him to quickly summon the goddess a simple martini opposed to the concoction he had been cooking up and push it toward Urd as he looked away bashfully.

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Urd had downed her entire drink without as much as a wince; if that wasn’t impressive, Genie didn’t know what was. He tried to imagine the last time he had indulged himself in an alcoholic beverage other than wine or Champaign, but could only think of the sake he had tried back in Japan. Now that had certainly been an interesting night. He didn’t quite remember how he’d gotten back to his hotel room, but somehow he had managed.

“Ah, thank you. Good to see you looking better so soon. If only that stuff worked like that for everyone – everyone over the respectable age to drink, I mean.” The djinn smiled, pleased to hear the drink had met her approval. “And don’t worry, it was really my fault. Definitely need more practise.”

He paused for a moment, noticing the look the goddess had given him from the corner of his eye. His suspicions of her thoughts were quickly confirmed when she spoke. Genie found himself, for the first time with Urd, not surprised by her words. He predicted such a subject would arise, at least part of it, anyway. A meek smile appeared on his lips.

“I suppose.” He replied, looking past Urd for a moment in thought. “Power isn’t everything though. Fame, fortune, they’re not always necessary. A beggar could be twice as happy as a king, if not more so.” The genie leaned against the counter as well, eyeing the goddess suspiciously. “You do realize the universe is ruled by law though, right? Everything -if not everyone- is bound by something. I have rules to follow just like everyone else... I'm not a bad boy if that's what you were hoping for. Stripes do NOT look good on me. I mean, HELLO! That is SO last fall. It's all about bright and bold now.”

Appearing in a striped prison uniform before Urd, he rattled the chains to his handcuffs in front of her face in frustration.

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Big old blue really was nothing but a softy. Not that it bothered him, he had simply never thought about it being obvious before. Though he could easily say he knew when to put his foot down… Sort of. He was only considerably stern when he was mad and that took either a lot of something or something incredibly low. He doubted, however, that the goddesses plan was out to get him upset with the comment and ultimately have him join ‘the dark side’ or something to such extent.

He brought his hands back in front of his own face, looking curiously at his now bare wrists (save for his golden ‘shackles’; a memento of his previous life) before glancing back at Urd with interest. The rest of his prison uniform disappeared shortly after. He tapped his finger against his lips in thought before replying to her, considering the mentioned system. It sounded like a lot of work to keep up, but definitely worth it if it truly did maintain balance.

“Makes sense. Too bad it didn’t work the same with all potential threats. You know witches, genies, sorcerers, other gods… I can think of quite a few who’d be in some serious trouble. Who are in serious trouble.” Genie folded his arms across his chest and frowned. “As for you, I don’t want to think of the sort of trouble you could get into.” He added, teasingly.

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Genie chuckled in agreement at the goddess. “Well, some I suppose. There are a few minor rules I’ve broken myself. Though I’d prefer to say I bent them more than actually broke them. I mean, some of them are simply not fair! To follow them would be a greater crime than to break them.” He threw his hands in the air and sighed. It was frustrating be a genie sometimes, more so then he liked to let on. Rubbing his hand against his forehead, the genie found himself reminded of the many times he had extended his power beyond what he was meant to.

He continued to look at Urd attentively, raising a brow when he noticed she was starting to stare at him. At first he suspected he had grown a third eye (it had happened before), but felt nothing when he brought his hand to his forehead for a second time. Genie wondered what she was thinking and soon what ‘burden’ she wished to share which called for such seriousness.

“What is it you wish of me?” the djinn asked jokingly but most curious than anything else. “I can’t manipulate the rules you follow if that’s what you’re wondering.”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Genie wasn’t quite sure what to say at first, Urd’s request had been completely unexpected. The heartless, manipulation of the ‘heart’… Why, he had never considered such a thing himself and he had been in Paixao far longer than the goddess. He could see why it would be such a serious matter to her (and certainly himself) and why she had come to him though. She was scared, as he realized he should have been too, but he felt confident that this ‘Organization’ knew better than to meddle with a genie. It was Maleficent, Hades, and Jafar he was ultimately worried about.

“You’re worried about a little thing like that?” he asked, casually leaning against the bar. “A goddess of infinite knowledge and astronomical power over the course of thousands of years compared to those of a mere forty years at the most? Urd, I thought you had more confidence than that!” Leaning over the bar, the djinn placed his hand on top of the goddesses. The other he placed against her cheek tenderly while he assured her more seriously. “Besides, that wouldn’t happen. I won’t let it. You’ll be okay, I promise.”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
The djinn smiled, more than pleased to be of assistance to the goddess. And though he had never truly said it, he had made a promise with Urd; he would do whatever it took to keep the city safe, as well as her. If she were to fall under the Nobodies spell, he would as she said and seal her away until the said spell could be lifted. The idea was alarming, as well as the fact that she believed this Organization possessed such power. He pondered his own knowledge of group, but only for a moment or two. Urd was right, it was time to put such thoughts that aside.

Finding himself oddly uncomfortable, Genie pushed himself away from the woman as she drew near. “I look forward to it!” he replied cheerfully, wiping off the bar counter with a clean cloth. “By then I should have myself a new pair of Nikes. Let’s see you try and keep up with me then.”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Genie did not comment on Urd’s choice of footwear at first, but he did agree with her; they were not running apparel in the slightest. Though, in all fairness, he had seen many women run in heels before. It never failed to amaze him, especially after trying to do so himself in a hot ruby pair. But that was another story entirely. He simply nodded in response, realizing he had been staring at her legs. Oops.

“An ace, hu?” he asked, the bar finally disappearing in a cloud of smoke, as well as his tux. “That wouldn’t be the ‘goddesses go first’ rule, would it?” A grin spread across his face as he approached her, curious as to what she had in mind for the future. He was surprised when she turned to face him, but continued to share a toothy grin regardless.

“Oh, no. Not anymore. I’m trying to support Paixao by paying to stay in a hotel, as well as all the other places I stayed during my vacation so far. I’m considering buying an apartment, seeing as I’ll be here awhile, but I haven’t quite looked into that just yet.” The djinn summoned a clipboard and pair of reading glasses, licking the pencil that also appeared in his hand before he brought it down on the paper. “But this is about you! I want to hear what YOU want! What are you looking for, any particular requirements? What’s our price range? Do we need it by any schools or daycares? Details, details!”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
“Some of us are known to cut a few corners.” Genie replied to the goddess, a similar grin to hers appearing on his face. “Whether or not it’s in that department is not mine to judge.” It was completely possible to have a child without love or marriage as far as the djinn was concerned. He had seen such a case with the now missing ‘mayor’ and a young lion by the name of ‘Simba’.

The genie nodded, scribbling down Urd’s necessities as he heard them. It was difficult to predict the area of the city with the most inhabitants, something Genie ultimately predicted in the end. He looked back at the goddess behind his shoulder to check if he had listed everything correctly so far when he felt her presence behind him, repeating everything he had written.

“Large inhabitants, friendly neighbourhood, within walking distance of a bar. I put you down for two bedrooms at the least. Your vague price range leads me to many possible listings, regardless of your two biggest requirements but I think I can narrow it down.” He turned to face the goddess on this note to hear her thoughts on this, but was surprised by her following words. The led to his pencil snapped against his clipboard.

“Me?” Genie asked, pointing to himself questioningly as he sank to the ground “No one’s ever really wanted to live around me before. I… You wouldn’t… You’re not playing me here, are you?”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
“Thank you, Urd!” he cried, giving the goddess a big, blue, squishy hug. “You’re fun to be around too! I’ve had a wonderful afternoon! I hope we can get together again soon.” Realizing he might have been squeezing the woman a tad too tightly, he released his hold. “Oops! Sorry about that. I just can’t help myself sometimes. Somebody’s gunna have to rub the lamp.”

Flying into the air, the djinn pull down a white screen that levitated in the air in front of Urd and flicked on the projector behind her. Without adjusting the lighting within the dome, it revealed a beautiful map of Paixao. Genie approached the image with a meter stick in hand and pointed to the west side of the image.

“Here we have the Cheap Prayer; a very dark tavern lit only by the candles on the tables. To my knowledge, the food is exquisite! Beside it we find Iriela Apartments. Said to be owned by gypsies, they offer a low price for an all too shabby room. Some things are better worn in, however. On the other side, just North of the tavern, we find Haja o Que Houver.” He continued, sliding his pointer to the hotels location. “This family owned hotel offers its guests the pleasure of dining within the hotel itself with its very own restaurant which is ALWAYS full of activity. The Cheap Prayer itself is a little ‘run down’ as some call it. There is also another bar called the Wild Ginger East of the city which you may find a little more appropriate.”

[identity profile] ttlynotblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
“I think it’s a wonderful choice.” The djinn replied, giving the screen a small tug which allowed it to roll back up and disappear along with the projector. “And you live close to me. I’m just over in Haja o Que Houver so if you ever need to borrow a cup of sugar or anything, you know where to find me.” He added with a wink.

Pausing for a moment, Genie tapped his chin in though. “I don’t suppose you know how to get to Iriela Apartments from here, do you?”
