On the Case! [Complete]
Character(s): Vyers, Urd, Timon, Xion...Simba? Namine? Whoever lives in this crazy commune that used to be Vyers' apartment?
Content: Vyers is hiding something and Urd can't take no for an answer.
Setting: The apartment Vyers shares with lots of people and animals.
Time: Week 20...daytime?
Warnings: None. CHAOS!
It was no surprise that Vyers was secretive. He apparently had a thing for being a man shrouded in mystery, though the cool factor seemed to constantly be decreased exponentially every time he failed, which...seemed to be a lot. He hid his relationship with his son, she was fairly certain he'd hidden the same fact from Laharl himself until recently and now, he was hiding something again. Honestly, the end result was less impressive and more exceedingly frustrating.
After a conversation with the demon over the network in which she'd said way more than she intended, Urd dashed out of the house she shared with Genie and Yorda and immediately flew up towards the domed ceiling. How dare he try to be all secretive with her, like she was another kid he could manipulate! Like he was her mothe -- well, it didn't matter. She was going to his place right now and forcing it out of him by any means possible!
...now, where did he live, exactly?
Urd stopped her ascent and scowled, looking over the tops of the buildings. Okay, so she hadn't thought this through. No problem. She reached up to her ear and snapped off one of the thin golden shafts on her hoop earring and held it out in her palm.
"Find me the one that I seek," she whispered, bowing her head and closing her eyes as she concentrated her power into the piece of metal. It rose above her hand, slowly spinning in place like the needle of a compass. It spun faster and faster until it was a golden whirl in the sunlight -- and then it abruptly stopped, pointing the way for a few seconds before darting off.
Smirking at her own ingenuity, Urd followed it, flying with more speed than she should but not really caring. For some reason, she couldn't help but feel time was of the essence.
The barely visible part of her earring lead her to an apartment complex. As she neared it, she didn't slow down, but held out her hand. The doors to the building flung open as if by a strong wind and the goddess sped on through, heedless of the shocked shrieks of the people she nearly collided with. Up the stairs, down the hall and...
"Vyers!" she shouted, slamming open the door while simultaneously catching the tiny gold rod out of the air in her fist. "Get your skinny butt out here!"

Of course, it was only the briefest of thoughts, immediately shoved away as Timon came through the opened door and the two proceeded into their usual routine of arguing one another. Although this time it took a strange turn and Vyers was immediately on the defensive, repeatedly stating to the meerkat that he was, in fact, doing fine and he didn't look as terrible as Timon believed. It was just a lack of sleep was all, and he was doing his best to make it up.
Vyers knew he couldn't keep up the excuses and lies for long, but he was hoping that they would at least hold until Urd arrived. The truth would come out eventually, but he would prefer to not tell it more than was necessary. The more he lied, however, the harder each lie was to say, and Timon's persistence was beginning to wear on him. How much easier this would be if they were still communicating over the journals... At least then he wouldn't have to say everything.
Just as the demon began to sigh and put a hand to his forehead, Urd's voice rang out in the apartment, making him jump. He recognized the voice quickly, however, and calmed down, offering a brief glare at the door for such a brash intrusion.
Slowly, and with some effort, Vyers got to his feet and started to walk to the door, freezing in the doorway as he finally realized that he had not planned this very well. Or... at all, really.
And that he had forgot to warn everyone else about the goddess's arrival.

Only now, as she started to head out of where Roxas was staying, there was someone at the door. So she attempted to hide herself, just in case. If it was Saix or someone, it wouldn't do them much good, but... she had promised to keep the fact that she knew where they lived a secret.

Timon flew off the demons bed and out of the bedroom faster before Vyers even had a chance to stand up. Last he had checked the kids had been sitting in another room together talking but whether or not they had moved elsewhere while his time was spent with Vyers he wasn’t sure. He only hoped they were not in the open and until he figured out how to rid of this intruder would remain hidden. If only Vyers hadn’t been stupid enough to get himself hurt like this, then he wouldn’t have found himself in the lousy position to protect everyone by himself. Idiot.
The meerkat slid into the room, crouched down in an attack stance, teeth bared and prepared for a fight. However, a look of complete surprise quickly appeared on his face when he recognized their intruder. “U-URD?!” he choked out in disbelief. “What are you doing here?! And why did you kick our door down? We need that, you know. You better fix that.”
Other characters, feel free to jump in if you want to whenever.
Another wave of her hand and the door snapped back onto its hinges, completely back to normal. As it swung shut by itself, Urd reached up to her ear to reassemble her earring, taking a quick survey of Vyers. He was more than just tired-looking; it was subtle, but there was pain etched into his features. Something was definitely wrong.
Jewelery completed, she swung her pointed finger in his direction, her other hand on her hip. "You. Start talking!" In the back of her mind, she knew anger probably wasn't the best way to handle this, but dammit, she was worried.

He immediately flinched and took a step back as soon as Urd laid eyes on him, wincing as she suddenly snapped at him. Did she have to be so... forceful about it? And why did she have to bring this up out in the open like this? Ah... he had not wanted for everyone in this room to know. But if he spoke quietly enough... Yes. That would make things much easier--not that that was saying much. He hadn't the slightest clue how to begin.
The demon shifted anxiously, looking for all the world like he would love nothing better than to dive back into his room, lock the door, and never come out. "It... Ah... It, it is complicated," he stammered out, his gaze fixed on a nearby wall.
no subject
"What...what's going on...?" he asked cautiously, trying not to be too loud in case someone got angry at him.
no subject
The Timon actually looking ready to fight was really surprising, but she had a feeling now was not the best time to say that, either.

Hearing Roxas’ voice, the meerkat spun around to find the Nobody standing right in plain sight, Xion slightly hidden behind him. He glanced worriedly from Urd to Vyers where his expression changed to one of betrayal. It looked as though he and Vyers would have to have another talk later. He was clearly the one responsible for this. Ill or not, he could have at least told him he was having company. Timon looked back at the two Nobodies and gestured to them in a shooing motion while he approached them.
“It’s nothing. I don’t know what you’re talking about. There’s nothing to see here so let’s just go back into the other room...” before Urd realized who they were. “Vyers got his butt kicked by Laharl and is too embarrassed to admit it.” The meerkat continued, trying to direct attention away from the two while he tried to push them into the next room. He even went so far as to try physically pulling Roxas’ pant leg and Xion’s coat to get them moving. “He doesn’t want to admit he’s really hurt either.”
Although he supposed he could have told Laharl the truth of his fathers state instead, the last thing they needed was more people in the house. Giving away that little tidbit would make them even for now. Hmpf, how dare Vyers not tell him he had invited company over.
no subject
After a moments' hesitation, she folded her arms under her chest and smirked at Xion. "You don't know Timon, huh?" she asked her dryly, eyebrow raised as she looked meaningfully down to where the meerkat was currently trying to herd the kids somewhere else. She smiled to let both Nobodies know she wasn't a threat or angry, but she mentally added something new to her to-do-list; there were quite a few questions she had for them as well as Timon. "Don't worry, I don't bite."
First things first, however. Urd turned back to Vyers, no longer nearly as aggressive but still all business. "Come on, let's go back to your room." The way she stood, arms crossed and lightly tapping her high heel on the floor, brooked no argument.
no subject
Vyers glanced at the three in the living room nervously, half hoping for some sort of distraction. That hope didn't last very long, though, and soon he resigned himself to his fate turning and walking back into his room with a small "Mm."
He tried to order his thoughts in what short amount of time he knew he had, but even still he was unsure how to begin to explain. And beginning... That was the hardest part.
no subject
That left Xion, Timon, and Roxas out in the living room. "So...who was that?" he asked the meerkat, trying to piece something together of the fact she just kicked open the door and made it float back into place, and had gone from screaming at Vyers to inviting him to his bedroom.
no subject
Still, it didn't explain what was going on here, so she was still staying with Roxas, looking at Timon, who was at this point the only one there to answer their questions. "I think her name is Urd," she told Roxas, but was still looking hopefully at Timon for more answers, "But I don't understand what just happened..."
no subject
“Yeah, that’s her.” He confirmed, rubbing his temples. “You can thank Vyers for all the excitement back there. He invited her over without my consent. Typical of him but he’ll get what’s coming to him. She won’t tell anyone you’re here but…” Now that she knew where they were she could easily talk to them, mess things up. Timon liked the life they had made for themselves. It may have been secretive, dangerous even, but he truly enjoyed the time spent with the Nobodies. He groaned, thinking back to what he had been trying to say. “That doesn’t change the fact that she saw you two. She might even know you.” Timon lazily gestured at Xion. “She seems to know you.” At least she hadn’t told Urd she knew him though.
Folding his arms across his chest he glanced back toward the bedroom. "How about we go out for a bit, get a little fresh air, hu?" he suggested. "Well, as fresh as it gets here." Timon muttered. The sooner he could get the two out of the apartment however the better. Then they could avoid Urd's questioning, at least for the time being. The meerkat was hardly in the mood to even begin explaining things to the goddess. He looked back at the two with a grin, knowing just how to persuade them. "Maybe we can get some ice cream too?"
no subject
The mention of ice cream brought his attention back to the meerkat, though. "Yeah, we should get some ice cream! Come on Xion, we could have some fun!"
no subject
"Alright," she said with a smile, nodding her hooded head at the both of them.
Hope you guys don't mind!
Once the voices died down and she thought Vyers was in his room, she crept out and down to the main room, where she was very surprised to see Xion, Timon, and Roxas. Why were they standing there? Naminé hung by the shadows, though it was hard for her to blend in very well considering she'd taken to wearing a white robe that covered her from head to ankle, including a nice white hood. White never really blended well with shadows. She should know.
Still, she hesitated for a moment before stepping a little closer and speaking. "What happened?" Meaning, 'what were those voices I heard?'
no subject
“Naminé?” surprised to hear the girls voice, Timon turned to find the Nobody had joined them. “All that racket wake you up?” he asked in a mixture of both annoyance and amusement. “I’m not surprised. Sorry about that, kid. Vyers invited some company over. They felt it necessary to announce their arrival as loudly as possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if the entire building heard them.” The meerkat crossed his arms across his chest and rolled his eyes. “I wouldn’t worry about them though. We were just heading out to get some ice cream, maybe hit the park. I’m feeling particularly lucky today. I gotta good feeling this’ll be the day I finally get that winning stick.” He rubbed his paw together at the thought and smiled up at the blonde. “You should come!”
no subject
His face brightened when Timon invited Naminé along. "Yeah Naminé, it'll be fun!" He beamed, excitement written all over his wide-eyed, worry-free smile. Then he looked down at the meerkat. "...Winner stick? What's that?"

no subject
"The noise woke me up," she admitted. Napping a lot recently had seemed to be the best course of action considering how terribly she'd been feeling for imposing on Timon - and that didn't count the rain-induced cold from last week, either. Rubbing sleep from her eyes and trying to wrap her brain around what was going on, Naminé glanced at Xion and then back to Roxas. "I'd... like to come." This was almost like what Sora had called having friends, wasn't it?
no subject
Timon looked between the three thoughtfully before turning to head for Vyers’ bedroom. “I’m just gonna tell Vyers we’re going out.” He told them. “If there’s anything you need before we go grab it.”
no subject
She entered the bedroom and closed the door behind her, walking right into Vyers' personal space. While Urd was far less angry, she was still aggressively concerned about the demon. "You're ill, Vyers. I can see it in the air around you," she said softly, deep purple eyes scanning his face and missing nothing. "So don't try to lie to me." Her frown melted to a small, worried smile as she reached up and squeezed his shoulder. "Trust me."
With that, she turned around and sashayed to the bed, sitting herself down as if she owned it. She crossed her legs, folded her arms and looked at Vyers expectantly.
no subject
He opened and closed his mouth a few times before starting, only the smallest of noises escaping as he tried to find the words to say. If this was so difficult to tell to someone like Urd, how could he possibly let it out to others? "It is a little worse than that, I'm afraid," Vyers finally said, his voice barely above a whisper.
He walked over to the wall, leaning his arm against it and his head against his arm. "I should not have said anything," he muttered to himself, shaking his head. He wasn't ready. He wasn't ready to come to any sort of decision and this wouldn't help matters. He should have continued to deflect her questions, tried to hide it better, done anything but allow the goddess in. And yet that briefest of thoughts, the idea that she could have helped in some way and the fear that she would bring it up on the network--the worst of places to say such things--had ruled his decision.
But he wasn't ready. He wasn't ready. And the fear and indecision twisted his stomach into knots.

She looked down at the floor, wishing not for the first time that Belldandy was still here. Her younger sister would know what to say at times like this; she always knew just what to say to comfort and strengthen. "You said something because a part of you wanted to," she finally ventured, lifting her gaze to him again. "What do you think will happen if you let the people who care about you know what's going on? Vyers, what are you afraid of?"
no subject
That he couldn't go back once he had made his choice. "...Making the wrong decision," he finally said. "I... I cannot tell him until I have chosen."

But this could be his last chance. His last chance to see her, to hold her in his arms, to be there with her. Not a lie, not a hallucination, not in a way where she could disappear at a moment's notice...
And yet the more he thought about it, much to his surprise, the less appealing the second option became. He wanted to see her again, yes, but with so many people who needed him more... Not to mention what she would think if he left them in the first place. Especially if he didn't say anything.
Vyers couldn't help but laugh. It was tired, quiet, and distant, and it didn't quite reach his eyes, but he shook his head and slowly turned around to face Urd. "I wouldn't suppose you had any suggestions?"
no subject
"My sister..." she started, pausing for a moment and glancing away. "...when Belldandy disappeared, there was a part of me that felt hollow. Not knowing when I'd see her again, doubting if I ever would..." She gave a self-deprecating laugh and closed her eyes. "Well, a part of me just wanted to give up. Let the Organization or whoever come."
Urd opened her eyes slowly and looked back to Vyers, expression grave. "But it's not time to rest yet. Things are just heating up and the people we love need us, now more than ever. There will come a time when we'll see the people we lost again. But not yet." She grinned, brushing her hair off her shoulders.
"Besides, everyone would fall apart if they didn't have us to guide them."
no subject
All joking aside, he knew she was correct. Perhaps if he instead made it a temporary fix... No. No, if he did that he would end up in this situation all over again. The constant threat of his body giving out on him... If it happened at a crucial time, if he could not protect them again... It was one or the other.
no subject
"Vyers, you have to tell me what's going on...! I can't help you if I don't know what's happening. You're dying, aren't you? What is it?"
no subject
"Not quite," he said. He was calm as he said it, though he sounded as though he was trying to distance himself from the explanation. "I... have been dead for two years. This was a temporary reincarnation. The Seraph made sure that I would be able to stay as long as I could, but... he is not here, and I have pushed this body past its limits. Even if it is fixed now, it will continue to occur."
no subject
Her gaze snapped back to his and she moved to his side quickly. "Vyers, I need to look into your memories and see every detail I can about what happened to you. Will you let me do that? Can you trust me to keep your secrets?"
no subject
He nodded as she asked to see into his memories. If that was what it took, then that was what it took. If anything, he had to know.
no subject
It all happened in a few seconds. Urd gasped, feeling the empathic pain and grief from the connection she briefly had with Vyers and took a shaky step back from him, eyes wide and shimmering with tears. "Vyers..."
no subject
They immediately snapped back to Urd's face as she drew in a gasp and backed away. Vyers' brow furrowed slightly as he noticed the tears in her eyes. Perhaps he should have prepared her a little more for what she had been about to see...
He got to his feet and walked to the window, staring outside with his back to Urd, a sudden solemnity coming over his bearing. "It was what had to be done. Such are the sacrifices that come with being an Overlord."
no subject
Urd squared her shoulders, hands tightening at her side. "I can do everything in my power to help you, but it won't matter if you don't want it. The gift of life I'd give you would only go to waste. What's your decision, Vyers?" She narrowed her eyes.
"When the day comes when you're with your wife again, don't you want to be able to tell her you gave it your all?"
no subject
The demon's forehead rested gently against the cool glass, his eyes closed. "Would such a thing even be possible?" he asked, and there was the barest hint of hope in his voice. "Are you sure you would be able to do this?"
no subject
"I won't be able to reincarnate you again, but...I can try to stop the deterioration of this body. It will take a lot of preparation and some borrowed power...and will, as well." She glanced at him, knowing the next words out of her mouth might very well turn him off from the idea completely.
"And the cooperation from Laharl and Timon. Perhaps others as well. Are you up for that?"
no subject
Timon, then... Timon was more difficult to tell. The meerkat was so selfish, and yet there was how defensively he had reacted not long before. Would he even agree?
Even if he did have to tell them eventually, he wasn't looking forward to this. Briefly he considered trying someone else and seeing if they would have a simpler way, or at the very least a way that wouldn't require either of those two, but he reluctantly nodded. "Very well."
no subject
Urd walked up to the window and opened it, giving him a reassuring smile over her shoulder. "I'll go prepare. Contact me when everyone's up to speed." With that, she hopped out of the window and disappeared.
no subject
But in the end he knew it wasn't going to help, and, almost as though he were afraid of being caught by someone looking outside into the window, he jerked away and pressed himself flat against the wall, staring straight ahead like a deer caught in the headlights.
no subject
“Oi, Vyers. You still alive in there?” he called out.
no subject
He walked over to the door, hand resting on the knob as he tried to decide whether or not he should say anything, but the door was soon open, Vyers deciding that he would see what Timon wanted first.
no subject
Scratching the back of his head, Timon glanced outside of the room for a moment to look back at the Nobodies waiting for him. “Anyway, I need some money. With Urd here, or at least was here, I was gonna take the kids out for ice cream. She’s, uh, not coming back, is she?”
no subject
"We just... talked for a moment," he replied. "I believe it will be some time before she returns." Vyers walked over to one of the end tables, searching the drawers for something Timon could use as money. He pulled out some leaves and handed them over. "Here," he said quietly.
no subject
“I’ll let you know when we’re back.” He said before turning to leave. “Simba is still home. Wake him there are any problems.”
no subject
He nodded with a short affirmative noise, going to sit back down on the bed. He didn't think there would be anymore problems for the time being, but he would be sure to keep an eye on everything. "I hope you all have a good time," he said with the smallest of smiles.
