The More Subtile Things in the World [Complete]

Character(s): Roxas, Dib
Content: Roxas and Dib attempt to observe things from afar but fail, and are brought into the Nobody fiasco.
Setting: Haja o Que Houver [F4]
Time: Around noon
Warnings: None [just a lot of typos >>;]

It had only been several hours ago that Roxas arrived at Paixao, met Demyx, and brought Dib to Haja o Que Houver. Out of the distress caused by various happening, the blonde had been unable to sleep serenely. Instead, he had been lying underneath the sheet of the bed in the hotel room with his hands behind his head for several hours, musing over the fact that Organization XIII probably wanted to kill him... because he took actions that made him seem like a traitor. Nonetheless, Roxas couldn't help but want to be a part of something he didn't want to be a part of two days ago.

Why were things like that? Why couldn't he feel content with what he had? Why did feel the need for more when there was nothing in the world that he really deserved? Nobodies didn't deserve anything. They were just... Nobody.

That moment the former Number XIII thought of a complete new concept: what if he had a heart? It would defy the definition of a Nobody but anything was possibly, wasn't it? After all-- he already defied by definition of a Nobody simply by having no memories he had no real of his other self. Sora...

He half expected the booming activity and lively music to interrupt his thoughts, or maybe even the other boy that he teleported along with him. But there was no booming activity and lively music coming from downstairs. But there were sounds nearby. Maybe it was Dib? Or maybe someone else? Half-reluctantly, the boy slowly dragged himself out of bed and put on his Organization jacket. He found a rectangular device nearby and put that in the pocket of his jacket, then, walked out to see what the source of the sound was.

In all actuality, Dib was very used to bizarre goings-on. Being an aspiring paranormal investigator will do that to you; you tend to get caught up in interesting dilemmas. However, the alarming frequency of strange events that occurred over the past day was beginning to worry him. It must be a new record to, in the course of 24 hours, infiltrate an alien base, get zapped to another dimension (which may or may not actually exist), meet Lucifer Himself, discover the existence of a shadowy organization, get pulled through an interdimensional wormhole by a kid who didn't look much older than Dib, and now this.

Perched on a balcony overlooking the downstairs restaurant, Dib held his X-ray goggles to his eyes and peered at the strange white organisms that slithered and writhed through the panicked croud. Once his goggles were firmly attached to his face, he pulled out his laptop/journal hybrid and began furiously writing notes with the stylus. Fascinating.... absolutely fascinating.... Terrifying, to be sure, but these creatures were of a kind previously unknown to science! It was Dib's intellectual - no moral - obligation to make observations as much as he could, even though his heart was practically in his throat while watching the creatures wreak havoc on the innocent diners. He just hoped none of them would notice him...

He was so absorbed in his note-taking that the sound of Roxas exiting the room caused Dib to jump and nearly fall off the railing. "Gaaah!!" he yelped, waving his arms to maintain his balance. Once his footing was secure, he pulled his goggles away from his eyes and looked over at Roxas. "Jeez, it's about time you got up! These things have been here for fifteen minutes and twenty-four seconds!" he snapped, a little harsher than he'd intended. He sighed and, securing his X-goggles over his glasses again, returned his gaze on the chaos below. "Do you have any idea what these things are?" he asked, not looking at Roxas as he watched a Dusk chase down a woman.

Organization XIII? Dib made a note about that in his journal. "That wouldn't happen to be the organization you and Demyx are part of, would it?" he asked. The odds were highly favorable that it was. After all, there could only be so many shadowy secret societies in a place as small as this.

But if these organisms were sent by Organization XIII, and Roxas was part of the selfsame organization... that would mean that he was an enemy. A threat, at the least. Dib pulled his X-goggles up again and looked over at Roxas suspiciously. He shifted his feet beneath him so he was ready to jump and run at the slightest sign of an attack. After all, he was unarmed - it'd be foolish to try to fight. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that.

So many. So many noises. So many movements. So many people. The Dusk flitted from place to place, here running down an older man, there intercepting a woman in an evening gown. A second later it was on to the next target, always looking, always searching...

Movement. Above.

The Dusk turned its attention upwards. Though it had no eyes, it saw Dib perched on the balcony, and with him... Traitor. The terrified diners momentarily forgotten, the Dusk began to waft its spiraling way upwards, its mind focused on that single thought. Several others began to follow it, all chanting in a single silent voice: Traitor, traitor, kill the traitor. Eliminate. Destroy... Oh. The Dusks stopped midair, taken aback by the appearance of the Samurai. They was weaker than the Samurai, the Dusks knew. They milled about, wondering briefly what to do, until that call overpowered them again.

Kill the traitor.

They swooped towards Roxas and Dib, heedless of the consequences.

Several Samurai Nobodies appeared around the one who controlled them-- the Organization's [former] Thirteeth. Each took a gallant step toward a Dusk to fight it one on one. One of them, stood before a surprised Dusk that was attempting to attack Number Thirteen.

Orders were orders, and all of them would listen to them as long as they came from him for whatever purpose it may be. The one closest to the two boys drew its sword and slashed across the Dusk in front of it. Other Samurais did the same individual Dusks, one-on-one, with honor.

Dib yelped as Roxas summoned the Samurai, and this time he did fall off the railing - on to the balcony itself, fortunately, and not down to the restaurant below. He held his laptop over his head protectively as the Dusks swooped through the air. Of all times to be unarmed!!

However, he quickly got his feet under him and got out of the way, hiding behind a large potted plant. These creatures that had just appeared were different than the others - strikingly so. And now they seemed to be confronting the more slender organisms... some sort of internal conflict? Were they under Roxas's control, or was this fight unintended? Ever the scientist, Dib stayed where he was and continued to observe.

Three Dusks were immediately killed by the Samurai, cloven in two in a heartbeat. Three others that had floated up to the balcony managed to dodge the attacks, using their uncanny ability to stretch and contort to their advantage as they bent and twisted away from the blades. A fourth had an arm neatly sliced off, leaving it twitching and spasming on the floor. Those that survived quickly flew several feet higher to regroup and determine the next course of action; the Dusk are mindless, but they are not stupid.

Numbers. Sheer numbers. The Dusk "knew" that was their advantage in battle, and so at some unseen signal they all descended on one of the Samurai, reaching out with their tentacle-like arms to trap and ensnare it.

Elsewhere in the room, Dusk were mown down by Roxas's keyblade. Still, despite the obvious disparity in power, they continued to advance. Unless they were told otherwise, it was all they could do. One lucky one managed to curve over Roxas's head without getting immediately sliced in half, and it lashed out in an attack from behind.

There were too many Dusks: they were all over the place and no matter how many the Samurai killed, more and more seemed to be coming from somewhere. As if in an attempt to slay more Dusks, several more Samurai appeared but it was still not enough to defeat them: they had too much pride to simply slaughter all of them at once. But orders were on the verge of being disobeyed. Nonetheless, all of the Nobodies under the Thirteenth's continued to attack the countless Dusks. Even though none of the individual Samurai have been killed by a Dusk just yet, as a group, they were outnumbered.

The Dusks slowly seemed to realize the power of their numbers: they reached out for a Samurai to ensnare it successfully. It was the first loss on the latter's side.

A single Dusk managed to go over Roxas's head effectively. Samurais nearby attempted to rush to their master's aid but it as too late: at the very least, Number Thirteen would suffer from a minor injury if he managed to notice it promptly.

Thinking Roxas had fallen, Dib rushed out of his hiding place and peered over the balcony to see if the boy was okay. Upon seeing that Roxas was not only on his feet, but was also laying waste to the Dusks with his keyblade (Where'd that come from? Dib wondered), he relaxed. A bit. Until he saw that things were not going well for their "side" at all. He quickly slipped his laptop back into its holster, leaving his hands free in case he needed to flee.

Suddenly, he spotted the Dusk that managed to get behind Roxas. "Watch it!" he yelled, and without thinking jumped off the railing. Through a mix of a little skill and a lot of luck, Dib managed to land square on the Dusk's back, feet first. Once he hit the ground, crushing the Dusk beneath him, Dib quickly rolled to absorb the rest of the force. Which meant that, though his legs weren't broken, he now was very sore all over.

Shakily rising too his feet, Dib realized that perhaps that hadn't been the best idea. He also realized he was now in the thick of the battle without any sort of weapon. His response to this epiphany? "...Oh."

The ranks of Dusks had thinned. Their numerical advantage weakening, the Dusks adopted a more cautious approach. They wouldn't stop attacking of course; they would never stop unless ordered to do so. And so they all focused on one of the Samurai again, considering how successful that strategy had been before. Once they had finished off the Samurai, one by one, they would all swarm the traitor.

Like a whirlwind of gray rags, the Dusks descended on another Samurai, their tentacle-like arms whipping out to bind and constrict its arms. Once it could not use its fearsome sword, the Samurai would be little threat.

Once again, the Dusks began to close in on individual Samurai Nobodies. The Samurai took several steps back to avoid the other Nobodies, and then some took further measures to avoid them by materializing to a different area. The targeted Samurai slowly fought off individual Dusks that came their way: for the most part, it was unsuccessful. A percentage of the Samurai Nobodies have already been wiped off.

Fight them off. We need to fight them off. Number Thirteen had gone back to the balcony. Immediately, a small group of three Samurais followed behind him to stand guard. The others were still fighting down below... It seemed to getting a bit more desperate: their master appeared to be in a rush. Unnecessary actions could no longer be taken. They would not run, but at the same time, not leave Roxas unprotected. That sort of action was not a part of their orders...

...He was kidding, right?

"Pack?!" Dib repeated in a sort of panicky-incredulous tone. "You want me to pack? Now?! What is there even for me to - AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!" He jumped as the Samurai joined them on the balcony. It took him a few seconds of yelling incoherently to remember that the Samurai were the good guys. He thought. Hopefully.

Ducking as another Dusk floated by overhead, Dib growled, "Zim is SO DEAD when I find him." Granted, he'd always intended for Zim to be so dead when he found him, but things never really seemed to work out that way. Next time, though, Zim would be really so... dead... stuff.

Anyway, he was sure this could all be blamed on that stupid little alien. And even if it couldn't, Dib would blame it on him anyway. Because Zim was stupid. And so dead. "How about we just, um, go and... go? Like now? As in leave... and stuff?" Dib suggested. Yes, vacating the premises seemed the best idea.
