Foundation Day Festival: At the Entrance

Character(s): everyone entering the festival by the gate
Content: weapons confiscation, greetings, etc.
Setting: Joco da Crianca Fairgrounds, entrance
Time: all day~
Warnings: Multithreaded posting format (please include time of day and sub-location in your comment's subject line)

For the festival, the Jogo da Crianca fairgrounds have been ringed by a modular eight-foot-tall iron-bar fence. Signs all around the vicinity point to the entrance, which is the only large gap in the fence. Because this is Paixao, there is a line to get in, but it moves quickly.

At the front of the line is a small security team; as people enter, they are asked to check their weapons or dangerous items with festival staff. Once unarmed, they are given a receipt to pick up their items on the way out, as well as one complimentary raffle ticket, and are allowed to proceed into the fairgrounds.

Just inside the entrance are two tents, one labeled "SECURITY / LOST AND FOUND," and the other labeled with "FIRST AID" and a large red cross.

Vexen had had a terrible time deciding whether to attend this mockery of a festival or not. Having finished and filed all the reports from the recently completed series of experiments, he found himself with nothing better to do and subsequently found himself wearing a brown double-breasted business suit and standing in line behind a young lady whom he recognized as one of the Keybearer's friends.

There was no way to tell just how much she knew about the Organization. With that in mind, Vexen saw no need to introduce himself, at least not at the curent moment. He simply stood behind her, taking in the sights of the festival - he'd not been involved in its planning, after all, and so everything was new to him - and remaining silent.

Kairi shuffled her feet against the ground, imagining strange images in the path of light dirt as if they were the clouds from Destiny Islands, and she felt for a moment that her friends were standing besides her, joking with their carefree laughs, without the fear of Heartless coming to creep out of the sand instead of the crabs.

"But Riku... Sora will eventually beat you, I'm sure of it." She whispered, really to herself then to the boys that she wishes were besides her. Ah, but the comment didn't help her thinking happy things, and she shook her head, rubbing a hand up around her neck. She glanced over her shoulder, then realized that someone was behind her and jumped. "Oh! I'm so sorry... you must think I'm... um... sorry." She blushed nervously.

Vexen was not amused. Evidently the Keybearer's friends were crazy. It did, however, warrant further investigation. "It is not a problem," he replied simply, cursing the weakness of his acting skills. Luxord or Marluxia would be better suited to this sort of thing.

Just his luck.

"It sounds as though you are missing someone," he ventured.

A silver haired gentleman in a long black coat stood behind the chatting pair, looking mildly bored. Festivals of this type had never really been his idea of fun - mostly because he usually had to lead soldiers through on parade while they were going on. Needless to say, he had no idea what to do with himself at a place like this.

The nervous redhead caught his attention for a moment, as did the brown-suited man behind her. The former was quite obviously an outsider; the latter... He didn't really seem to fit in. Who wears a business suit to a festival?

Then again, it wasn't as if Sephiroth could complain. He was wearing his traditional battle garb, the same clothes he had arrived wearing. Gem studded mythril armlets and shoulder guards, black leather pants and coat, open throated shirt with crossed straps in front; he certainly wasn't the picture of a man out for a casual time at the fair, that was for certain.

She rubbed her neck, embarrassed, something she almost certainly picked up from Sora. Her eyes glanced back towards the line, making sure it wasn't moving on her too fast, and then turned towards the man, nervously smiling. "Ah... yes, you could say that. Two friends of mine, that I hadn't seen in such a long time, keep sort of... disappearing or something odd just... happens to them."

"Interesting." Vexen quirked an eyebrow at the girl's words. "Disappearing, you say? Do you have any idea how this could have come about?" He put on a concerned expression. "It's quite troubling to hear that something such as that could happen in the city. I do hope they'll be alright." Okay, maybe that was overdoing it. But it couldn't hurt to build some semblance of friendship with this girl, even if it was entirely fake.

Sephiroth paid close attention to the man's facial expressions and his posture, and came to a conclusion.

Vexen was lying through his teeth.

Not that Sephiroth could do anything about this without calling undue attention to himself. Not only that, but he had no way of knowing whether there was actual malicious intent or if the guy was just an asshole. The inflection of his words was a bit flat, almost bored; maybe he just didn't care. But Sephiroth was becoming increasingly convinced that, whoever he was, this person was no local. The feeling was all wrong.

"Disappearances have been happening for a long while now," he interjected, frowning at Vexen. "Every few days, it seems, a foreigner vanishes."

Kairi's eyes trailed to the other man, widening a fraction when she his silvery hair. For a brief moment she was reminded of Riku - very brief. She smiled at them both, sadly not quite picking up on Vexen like Sephiroth had. She didn't want to admit that she was looking for a bit of support... never to replace her friends, but maybe... at the fesitval, she could make some other friends; friends from this city.

... Wouldn't that be nice?

"I don't think... it's the same kind of disappearances that have been going on..." she paused from the thought and hung her head. What if they had been kidnapped? She... she... No. There's no possibility that they, after all they've pushed through, couldn't get themselves kidnapped! She looked back up with a strange determination in her eyes; ones that she hadn't had for awhile. "Thank you. I hope they're alright, too."

"Are they really?" Vexen adopted an air of surprise, glancing over at the intruder to the conversation. "I had no idea."

"You see," his attention returned to his friendlier audience, the redheaded girl, "I've only just arrived in the city, and I'm afraid I have yet to hear about any of the recent events, or anything else for that matter. Do you think you might be able to assist me?"

"Oh? You haven't? ...Well, the Message Board is always a good place to look when you're new to the city. I sometimes forget to check it myself," she chuckled and pulled out the small journal, opening it and stepping to the man's side, pushing a button that opened the board. "See?" she smiled and closed it again.

"It's very helpful. A lot of people make sure to keep everyone informed about anything bad that's happening!" She shuffled forward as the lined moved more, eyes widening a fraction when she realized it had been quite a bit. Once she was caught up again, she turned back towards the two. "I'm Kairi, by the way," she said suddenly, realizing that she hadn't introduced herself - how rude of her!

She then nodded to the silver haired man. "He's right, though. From what I heard they've happened a lot. Some stuff with the Organization people talk a lot about... there was an instance a bit back with Nobodies... but I haven't seen any Heartless here, at least..."

Sephiroth had to admit, the guy was playing it close. "People were disappearing long before these kidnappings," he mused, then shrugged. "A friend of mine disappeared right before my eyes."

With all things considered, he did not like the way things were adding up. Either this girl - Kairi - was hopelessly naive, or there was something weird going on here. But what could he do about it, in all honesty? His talents lay in combat, not in the pleasantries of conversation. What little he knew about interrogation involved thumb screws, at the very least.

Even considering that, though, Sephiroth was not a cruel man. Far from it. He just didn't have the background for this. "I'm Sephiroth," he ventured, wondering as he did if the other guy would even bother giving his name.

(Sorry for the long wait; maaaaaaaajor compy troubles.)

"Oh, thank you." Vexen faked a smile at the girl's advice - he'd gotten quite good at that lately, he'd discovered - and flipped open his own journal, sparing a glance at the message board before returning his attention to the conversationa thand.

"These disappearances are troubling," he mused convincingly, "especially if they seem to have no known cause. And what's this about an organization?" He acted surprised. "And heartless and nobodies...I'm afraid I've never heard of those before." He looked away, muttering distantly, "What have I gotten myself into?" and finding himself rather pleased with his performance thus far. If he could keep it up, he could get quite a bit of information simply from these two.

He grounded himself back in reality as he heard introductions. "Oh, I'm Ven," he replied smoothly, remembering almost too late not to give his real name. That would have been a complete disaster. "Pleased to meet you both."
