Foundation Day Festival: At the Entrance

Character(s): everyone entering the festival by the gate
Content: weapons confiscation, greetings, etc.
Setting: Joco da Crianca Fairgrounds, entrance
Time: all day~
Warnings: Multithreaded posting format (please include time of day and sub-location in your comment's subject line)

For the festival, the Jogo da Crianca fairgrounds have been ringed by a modular eight-foot-tall iron-bar fence. Signs all around the vicinity point to the entrance, which is the only large gap in the fence. Because this is Paixao, there is a line to get in, but it moves quickly.

At the front of the line is a small security team; as people enter, they are asked to check their weapons or dangerous items with festival staff. Once unarmed, they are given a receipt to pick up their items on the way out, as well as one complimentary raffle ticket, and are allowed to proceed into the fairgrounds.

Just inside the entrance are two tents, one labeled "SECURITY / LOST AND FOUND," and the other labeled with "FIRST AID" and a large red cross.

Laharl had been right about one thing: Flonne was indeed worried about him. Normally she'd be certain that Laharl could handle himself, but...well, this wasn't normal. The strongest person she'd ever known had been badly beaten and had returned a week later with ten times his usual amount of darkness, so much that he couldn't handle it.

She couldn't ever remember being this scared. She didn't want him to be taken away from her again. She didn't want him to be hurt...

So she stayed close to him, doing what seemed to be a very good impersonation of super glue and actually finding herself happy that he was grumping again - it meant he was feeling more like his usual self. "So we can get in, Laharl-san!" she replied brightly to his question, standing on her tiptoes in an attempt to see what was going on further up the line. "It looks like they're doing something at the gate..."

To say it came as something of a surprise to realize that the scent of one of the people standing shortly behind him in line would hardly have been accurate - without a heart it was, after all, rather hard to feel 'surprise' - but it was certainly a rather serendipitous occurrence.

"As mentioned already, because there is no better way in," he answered simply. "However," a faint smile, "I rather doubt that was entirely the sort of answer you were looking for with that question."

Ah a festival, Etna was glad they got Laharl back in time to visit it, they probably would have missed it if they were still looking.

When she saw him for the first time since arriving in this city, she decided on two things. First, she outwardly decided that a festival would be fun and good or the prince's spirits and second she secretly decided that this was by far the best place to lure out this Larxene, confront her and kill her, so that Laharl could go back to his old snobby self again.

Etna was keeping an eye out for trouble, but she seemed to be having trouble from keeping the other eye from trying to see past the gate and into the festival. It was certainly nice that she could so easily mix business and pleasure but it was already getting difficult to keep her concentration on both.

She was getting just about as impatient as Laharl when she mirrored his question, trying to hide her excitement.

"Why ARE we waiting in line? We've got a flying carpet!"

Ivan jumped a little and turned back halfway to talk to the others properly. "Etna, no!" he whispered nervously. "I thought we wanted to keep a low profile?" After all, it didn't really do much good to be in disguise if they made an entrance like that. Much as Carpet would probably want to be useful, Ivan frankly didn't see it as worth blowing what little cover they had.

Hardly sparing the disguised nobody a glance, he hmphed in reply. It wasn't the response he was looking for, and most certainly not from the people he was wanting a response from. It was none of the strangers business as far as Laharl was concerned.

Looking to Etna, who was sharing a similar sentiment to him, he looked thoughtful at her suggestion. It was too late for Ivan's worries. Laharl rather liked the idea of skipping over the fence.

"Not if we do it away from the gate, or cause a distraction," he suggested, lowering his voice to attempt to exclude the guy in front of them from their conversation as he looked around thoughtfully wondering how they could do this.

Use Carpet to break the rules? And cause a distraction to do it? Flonne couldn't let that happen! "You can't break the rules, Laharl-san!" she whispered urgently, not quite knowing why it was they were supposed to be quiet but keeping her voice down anyways. "That's why they have rules! To make sure things work! If you break them, things don't work anymore!" She'd gotten all in a tizzy over it, not even stopping to consider that maybe it wouldn't be the end of the world if their little group cut in line this once, and that Laharl had been breaking rules all his life - it had become an art under his care. "And we can't cause a distraction, Laharl-san, it'll hurt people and we can't hurt people just because we wanted to get ahead in line it's not right and they'll be hurt and we just can't do it, Laharl-san!" She finished her whispered entreaties, a bit out of breath and hoping for once he'd listen to her.

The comments about 'we have a flying carpet' and 'trying to keep a low profile' piqued Zexion's interest, although try as he might he couldn't manage to pick out enough of the ensuing conversation to make a coherent whole out of it - picking up only one word in five, if he were lucky.

But no matter. Whatever they decided to was their concern, and not his - at least until either they chose to directly involve him or he was told to make them his concern by one of the few persons he could be made answerable to.

Of course, neither did this mean that he wouldn't, at the least, try to get a general idea of their ideas, merely that he wouldn't directly involve himself should there be no reason for him to do so.

"Sometimes, Flonne, you have to break something so you can bring in a newer, better replacement, like a building or an old statue or a king or a Psp or in this case, a law. We're probably going to wind up taking over eventually, anyway. So what's a few laws broken if we're going to replace them anyhow?"

Etna smiled as she made her case. After all, circular logic works because circular logic works.

"And besiiides~ its only illegal if we're caught~"

Ivan couldn't help groaning a little at that. It always bothered him when they talked about taking over, mostly because he knew they were perfectly serious. "It's illegal anyway," he grumbled. One would think he'd have gotten used to the demons' warped sense of morality by now, after traveling with Etna for a week, but...

Laharl just inwardly groaned as Flonne started going into her Love Freak moralities again. Geez... not now Flonne. "I never damn well said anything about hurting people, Flonne!" he said in a whispered hiss, trying to make an effort to keep his usually rather loud voice down. He didn't like that guy in front of them. He and everyone else in the line probably already now had a good idea what they were talking about.

As Etna started talking, Laharl plucked out his journal. Typing a message really quick made so only the three could see, when done he pointed at his journal then the others, trying to hint they should check theirs and read the message. He was tired of this line and tired of arguing. He just wanted to go.. forget the carpet, he'd just go find somewhere to slip over the fence. He may be a bit weak, but he could probably handle that.

Or rather, he and Flonne would go do that. She seemed really worried about him and Laharl didn't fully understand it. He couldn't even yet quite decide if it was annoying him or not.

"Hmph, well... forget this. I'm going to go see if there's another entrance or something," Laharl then said after a moment, still keeping his voice low, but not so much as before. It was just an excuse to slip off to be heard by the rest of the line afterall.

Flonne still didn't like the plan. She still worried about Laharl, and...oh, maybe this whole festival was a bad idea. It was too late for thoughts like that, though, and at least this version of the plan let her stay with Laharl and keep an eye on him. Beggars couldn't be choosers, after all.

"Y-yeah," Flonne agreed, acting poor but intent certain. "I'll...I'll just go with Laharl-san."

Another entrance, was it? If that was truly what they were seeking then they wouldn't find any. After all, although one entrance did make for quite an impressive line it did mean that the number of people needed to man the entrances was significantly fewer.

But if they wanted to look (in vain, perhaps) for another entrance he wasn't going to stop them. And if he came across them inside at a later point, well, he'd just have to keep an eye out. And if things went rather less then well doubtless he'd be able to find a way out in time.
