Not in the moon's eye [active]

Character(s): Saïx and NiGHTS
Content: In the dark of the city, something not entirely friendly stirs
Setting: Somewhere
Time: Who can tell, with all the darkness?
Warnings: Potential violence

Ever since the former lord of the castle had been disposed, Saïx had been all but itching for a good fight. A chance to do as he had been born to do. To fight, to hunt, to know the 'joy' that came from tearing down an enemy with his own hands, his own blade. But the fight had been given the Larxene. Fitting, yes, but discomfiting. He could only silence the rage for so long once it had been awoken so thoroughly to the prospect. But he had been forced to, once it had seemed that this fight was not to be his.

Another outlet would need to be found, lest it tear free of its own accord.

The sudden plunging of the city into darkness... well, he could hardly claim to have known it would come, but it was certainly not something he intended to go to waste. Darkness called to darkness. And it would be hard to see just who he was in the darkness. Besides, he didn't need his eyes. His other senses would serve well enough in a time such as this.

Which only served to spur him forward into the darkened streets, yellow eyes half-lidded and cruel as he stalked through the streets, looking for a promising option. He had his intentions. Now he needed just one thing more. Someone to serve as the other half of the equation.

NiGHTS floated above the city, as usual - but something was amiss. As though the darkness were affecting the maren herself, NiGHTS was practically itching for some fun - possibly of the nightmarish kind. But where to find that here, and how to avoid harming people NiGHTS actually liked? She wasn't good, no, that much was true - but she wasn't evil, either, and terrifying people was no way to make friends.

So she drifted idly, playing her flute, the sweet tones of it forming a song as wild as the wind itself. MAybe she could find someone interesting that way - someone who'd be willing to play.

It was worth a shot.

NiGHTS remained perched on a building, gracefully drawing out the notes that stirred her own heart so. She lifted up into the air while she played, her eyes closed contentedly - or so it seemed. Slitted iridescent eyes watched through lowered eyelids for a sign of anyone interesting - but what was this? A wild-looking man who appeared to be following her song, his eyes as feral as she nearly felt.

The nightmaren lowered to the ground, almost, finishing the song, and lowering her arms - though her instrument always was invisible, its music was easily heard even by mortals. "Hello," NiGHTS greeted the strange man in black, bowing theatrically as usual. "What are you doing out in the dark?"

NiGHTS grinned at the man. Oh, she realized. An old greeting, and one that related to the moon, which watched over NiGHTS' own realm. How interesting, indeed, that NiGHTS would meet someone who knew that. "And also over you," she replied sweetly, her pupils dilating pleasantly. She tilted her head and crossed her arms, looking him over.

"Oh?" she replied. "How nice of you. There aren't many of those who respond to them these days." She appreciated it - but she could sense no Ideya in this man. Odd. Most living beings had at least one of them - and when they no longer had any, they became something... else. Nevertheless, NiGHTS wasn't about to ask what this man was - she didn't often like those questions herself, anyway.

NiGHTS was beginning to find this man intriguing, despite his lack of Ideya. Perhaps it was just her mood, but she was already enjoying this little encounter. The fact that he'd responded to her song alone made it interesting - with the way NiGHTS had chosen to arrange the notes, it would have confused and even frightened normal people.

"That's too bad," NiGHTS responded, her voice thickening into a purr as she grinned right back at the man. Like Saïx's own grin, however, it was far from a threat - although if the stranger was paying attention, he could see the fangs that wanted to form in the maren's smile. "So few people listen to anything worth listening to these days."

NiGHTS laughed, the sound almost like wind chimes as she did. "That sounds most agreeable," she told him. "What would you like?" NiGHTS wasn't terribly partial, herself, but she knew she wantedsomething out of this odd, restless state she was in. Perhaps Saïx would have a good idea - although NiGHTS thought she might already knew what he would say.

She rose up into the air a little, watching him, the glittering trail that spread from her fingertips dimmer and less lasting in this cloying darkness.

NiGHTS smiled - and it wasn't her usual bright, cheerful smile. No, this was the smile of something that had been sleeping for a very long time - centuries, perhaps - and was only now waking up. The creature stretched gracefully and laughed again. "That does sound like fun," she told him, giggling. It wasn't as though NiGHTS was one of those who considered the citizens people, anyway - they had no Ideya, no apparent sign of any true emotion, nothing real to speak of. It'd be amusing, to say the least.

"I'm NiGHTS, by the way," she told him. "Who are you?"

What with what Saïx was lacking - Ideya, namely - NiGHTS certainly wouldn't be able to even guess if he was lying. As it was, she had no reason to disbelieve the man, so she smiled. "It's nice to meet you," she told him, half-perching on the roof so she could see if anything looked like fun. Nothing in particular caught her eye, so she shrugged to herself and pondered before shifting her form into something that looked rather like a large cat and jumping down.

"Well, then," she told him, her usual colors even now, "shall we?"

"They must be inside somewhere," NiGHTS said aloud, as though she were responding to Saïx's own thoughts. She began to stalk back and forth, sniffing the air, testing it. It seemed musty and old, somehow, smoke mixed with mist. She didn't blame her friends for staying inside - nor the citizens, even if they didn't seem real to her. Oh, well. The game would begin soon enough, and that would be amusing, wouldn't it?

A smirk came to NiGHTS' own face as she noted the irony of Saïx's words. "Be careful what you wish for," she laughed. "Sometimes they have a nasty habit of coming true." She grinned at him - as much as her current form could grin - and stalked towards a likely-looking house. It was odd for the usually bright and cheerful creature to cause such trouble - but she would always be a Nightmaren at heart (something that sometimes bothered her), and sometimes, one could not help but let the beast out.

Like tonight.

"Would you?" NiGHTS asked him interestedly, her head tilted slightly to one side. How interesting that he would say that. Given his lack of Ideya, NiGHTS would have thought that he would end up in Nightmare whenever he slept - as most who lost their Ideya did. But this man was different somehow; perhaps he didn't dream at all. NiGHTS had certainly never seen the likes of him at the Dream Gate, at least...

She grinned at her companion again. "Sure," she laughed, as lightly as though they were playing a harmless little game, "why not?"

NiGHTS crouched beneath the window and balanced on her hind legs in order to bat against a window pain, giggling at the gasps she heard inside. If they were real, she wondered, would she be doing this? Would she care, at all? She did prank people and chase them about sometimes; would it have mattered, when the darkness filled the city so strangely and thoroughly?

Maybe, she decided. She didn't usually like this sort of game, anymore; it was more the sort Jackle would have played, or perhaps Reala. But this...

Something was certainly different about tonight. Surely it wouldn't do a terrible amount of harm to scare some silly old civilians who were really nothing more than dolls.

NiGHTS let out a low, bestial growl, her usual voice changed by the form she was taking. Of course, the effect would have been ruined if the citizens had heard NiGHTS' own amused chuckle - but luckily it was more feral-sounding than usual - another perk of the form.

She didn't care what they thought. She never cared what anyone thought of her, really. She did as she pleased and didn't mind the rest - though it could be amusing to see the reactions the citizens had to the scratching noise of one of NiGHTS' claws against the window pane.

[identity profile] eternitydreamer.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
NiGHTS allowed herself to scratch the window pane again, then pounded her paw against it to make it crack. Oh, she wouldn't break it, of course; at least, not yet. Likewise, she wouldn't break anything or anyone she cared about (if she happened to come across them), and she wouldn't go so far as to harm people.

She was not who she once was, but she could still have some nightmarish sort of fun, so she let out an agonizing roar, something that sounded nothing at all like the form she was taking, and chuckled at the screams.
