foramelody: (What?)

All who wander may not be lost (But Austria probably is) (Active//Closed)

Character(s): Roderich and Alice
Content: Two visitors run into each other in Paixao and find something in common.
Setting: City of Paixao, somewhere (Yeah, I'm specific)
Time: Afternoon.
Warnings: None, I think.

The conversation with the gentleman, Iroh, had been very enlightening on his situation, although it didn't make him any more comfortable. This place was strange, and if he was understanding correctly, outside the city walls was even stranger. Of course, he wasn't exactly enthused about being stared at by the strange blonde people (really, it was unnerving, although he wouldn't show it. One must always keep appearances.)

He tucked his hands into his jacket pockets, looking around as he walked. He knew he would get lost sooner or later, and at least knowing some of his surroundings might help him later. There seemed to have been a snowstorm, somehow, before he arrived, although it had tapered off. Snow still surrounded the streets, coming up to his knees in places, his thoughts wandered as his body did in this strange place.

Ironic, this. He thought. It is almost Weihnachten in Wien...I wonder what the citizens are doing...

Alice sat quietly on a bench, her hands in her lap as she pondered the situation she found herself in. This place wasn't like Wonderland at all - there was no madness to be found here, only reason. Reason she could follow, at that (although she'd long known the rules of Wonderland). She stared at her hands blankly; just a few days ago, she'd gone on a mad sort of wander about the city, unable to remember much except her own name. That had gotten her more than a few strange looks, but the Londoner was more than used to those by now.

Shaking her head as though to shake away her current train of thoughts (she disliked trains, anyway), Alice looked up, her eyes sharp and bright in her pale face. Upon noticing another person without blond hair, the young woman watched him, wondering inwardly as to what all the near-uniformity of this place meant.

It was surprising when one of the people she'd been watching came up to her; even more surprising was the fact that he addressed her - and politely, at that. She shook her head in response to his question. "No, I'm not, although I think that should be obvious," Alice replied, giving a pointed look in the directions of the citizens. "Are you lost?" She wasn't very fond of lost people, being one herself, but as long as she wasn't treated cruelly or without thought, she supposed she didn't mind being social. Ever since she'd left the Hatter's place of residence, she'd found herself to be more and more uneasy.

Perhaps it was the nightmares, the dreams of fire and dragons with buck teeth. But she'd defeated the Jabberwocky, hadn't she? Why was she being so terribly troubled by it now?

"It's hardly an accusation," Alice pointed out. "The citizens here all seem rather... blank. They remind me of dolls, all lined up." She didn't particularly like dolls, though she didn't know why. Perhaps it was some sort of side-effect from the hypnotic therapy she'd been undergoing; Bumby had warned her about that. Mentally brushing the subject away, Alice gladly took the change in subject.

"HAve you looked at your map yet? The journals around here are hardly of the normal variety, but they're quite useful."

Alice opened her own journal, turning it around to show him the map function. "It's simple enough," she told him. She'd found the map quite useful; Paixao was quite large, and she sometimes found herself getting a little lost in it. She'd gotten to know the city much better since then, but she still got lost here and there. Nevertheless, she enjoyed it a lot more than London and Wonderland lately, so she'd been more than happy (by her standards) to explore.

Alice nodded in reply, closing her journal and putting it back in her apron pocket. "These devices take some getting used to," she told him, "but they're quite useful." She could see why they handed them out at the gates, although there was surely another reason; no one gave out such useful things out of the kindness of their hearts.

At least, not in her experience.
