Sneaking out [Complete]

Character(s): Emizel and NiGHTS
Content: Try to make it outside, not gonna end so well.
Setting: The Actua Are in Vanaheim
Time: Sunset
Warnings: Guards and uh, yeeeaah...

There was still a bad feeling about all this. Like something foreboding was gonna happen. But it seemed kinda silly at the same time. Seriously, all they were gonna do was take a trip outside the city, what kind of demon would he be if he was afraid of some handful of guards? Especially considering everything else he's gone through already that had been far more crazier than that.

... Yet somehow that feeling was not shaking off. Maybe it had something to do with all the other unusual people trapped here? If there really was something powerful enough to keep everyone here as a whole, maybe.. maybe there was a good reason to be afraid? Which things Emizel really should be worrying about and which things he could probably ignore made things really, really confusing.

It also didn't help that he was gonna have to do this eventually anyway. And at the moment, NiGHTS was the only one that really could help him. For now he'll just... wait for him to either show up or respond back, while leaning near the windowsill in the hotel room.

"Boo!" NiGHTS popped up just outside the window, pulling a face. He giggled and waved, eyes bright with the prospect of a new adventure - things had gotten pretty boring around there. "Hey! Are you ready?" The Nightmaren didn't really care about the risk, nor did he think to take it into account; he'd had worse opponents than those flimsy guards, and none of them had ever been able to keep up with NiGHTS, anyway. What did he care if someone got put out by him breaking the rules and leaving the city? Rules never really made much sense, anyway.

Besides, this nightmare problem going around the city was bad enough. Why were so many having nightmares, and all at once? NiGHTS almost wondered if Reala or perhaps Wizeman were involved, but having seen no sign of either in the city, NiGHTS had no choice but to look for them himself and see if they weren't behind it. He felt a little badly for not telling Emizel the real reason as to why he wanted to go look, but it wasn't as if anyone knew he was a Nightmaren - and he had no intention of revealing it himself.

At Emizel's question, NiGHTS gracefully extended his hand to the other. "We'll fly," he said simply. "If we go normally, you'll just be buried in the snow. This way, we'll get to the gate faster." He hadn't Dualized in awhile, but he still remembered how - after all, he had at least a few decades of practice regarding it. With a wink and a smile, NiGHTS continued. "Don't worry. We'll get there in no time. Ready?"

"Don't worry!" NiGHTS reassured the other, hand still outstretched. "I can fly well enough for the both of us! I can carry you easily." Well, for a few minutes, at least. After that, Emizel would pretty much be on his own unless NiGHTS decided to turn into a sled again, but the nightmaren was confident he could get them to one of the gates in no time flat.

"Of course I'm sure!" came the reply, NiGHTS giving a cheerful little giggle. As soon as Emizel took his hand, the two beings merged in a flash of light, leaving what appeared to be only NiGHTS floating there. NiGHTS gave a whoop and spun around happily in mid-air before taking off in the direction of the Nifleheim gate. "Alright, don't worry about a thing," NiGHTS told Emizel, flying along. "I can at least get us to the gate before we have to separate, and this way you won't have to worry about the snow."

Rather predictably, it didn't take long for NiGHTS to reach the gate, still carrying Emizel. "Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it," he laughed, wondering at how people got around without flying all the time. Walking just seemed to boring to the Nightmaren, not to mention slow. "You've never Dualized before, huh? I can tell." No one save NiGHTS seemed able to do that, even in the Night Dimension.

NiGHTS slowed a bit at the sight of the guards, frowning. They didn't exactly seem happy to see him, and NiGHTS was in no mood to deal with them. "Well," he huffed, as though he had already explained what he was going to do, "are you guys gonna move out of the way, or not?" Forget that stupid mayor, people needed help.

There sure was a lot of guards around today - it looked like the mayor really was serious about keeping everyone in the city. "Alright," NiGHTS told Emizel in a low tone, "but I'm going to have to drop you after a little while. I can't carry you for much longer." The nightmaren braced himself and lifted up a little higher so he could skirt under the top of the gate, ignoring the shouts of the guards as he did so.

Unfortunately, as NiGHTS had warned Emizel, he felt the dualization process begin to come undone. "Whoops! Better fly lower," he said, zipping towards the ground in order to make the inevitable fall a little easier on his companion.

Unfortunately for NiGHTS, trying to hang on to Emizel meant he wasn't as good at focusing his attention on other matters - such as the fact that he was no within reach of the guards. "Hey!" he yelped, feeling a hand clamp around his arm, "let me go!" As the Nightmaren struggled, he dropped Emizel - lucky for the other, it wasn't a long way down, and so the boy was unlikely to be hurt. But as fast as NiGHTS was, he wasn't very strong, and he was having trouble extricating himself from the guard's grasp - and now more were coming. Needless to say, things weren't looking very good for him right now.

The guard flew back, alright - but so did NiGHTS, who wasn't suited for dealing with strong winds in his current form. "Woah!" he cried out, managing to stop himself before he hit anything. "Watch where you're aiming!" The nightmaren moved to kick off again, but a guard, who had managed to avoid Emizel's attack, managed to latch on, joined quickly by another who managed to stagger to her feet.

Growling, NiGHTS struggled, but his lack of strength combined with the guards' determination meant he was losing quickly. He never was very good at defending himself once he was grounded. "Emizel," he called, still fighting, "get out of here!"

NiGHTS continued to struggle with all his might but despite the advantage he usually got from being naturally airborne, he found himself slowly being dragged off. "Emizel!" he cried, his voice getting lost in the clamor. Maybe he shouldn't have teased the guards so often, after all. Whatever happened to him, though, he hoped his friend would be alright.

"Where are you taking me?" NiGHTS demanded, glaring at the guards as well as the citizens who merely stepped back, their thoughtless obedience angering him. Couldn't they see what was going on, here? This sort of thing would affect them, too. "Let me go!" he cried out again, struggling harder as he felt more hands grasping his arms. "Emizel! Run away!"

Straining to get a look at Emizel to see if he was alright, NiGHTS managed to turn his head just in time to see Emizel get knocked around. He struggled even harder at that, worry overtaking his features. This was all his fault. If only he'd been more careful when it came to keeping track of how long the dualization process would last, this wouldn't have happened. NiGHTS' panicked call of Emizel's name was drowned out in the noise of the angry guards' shouting, and he kept struggling as they pulled him away, fervently hoping Emizel would be alright.
