Fonology 101 [Active/Closed]
Character(s): Neirenn, Tear Grants
Content: A series of magic and fonic arte demonstrations.
Setting: Actua Are Hotel; J-7
Time: Week 21; Afternoon; Backdated
Warnings: None foreseeable.
So it began.
Tear switched her staff from one hand to the other as she readjusted her pack and proceeded to let herself into the lobby of the Actua Are hotel. It was quite different in comparison to the hotel where she and her comrades were staying. True, in some respects, this building seemed to shine where the other did not, but Tear didn't complain. So long as she had a comfortable place to sleep and enough room for necessities, just about any quarters would do.
She was here to introduce Neirenn to the usage of fonons, and to discuss setting up a clinic of sorts. The girl seemed genuinely interested, and certainly no one could complain about a freelance healer in this mysterious city. If things went well, Tear might even pick up a few things about the energies present on other worlds.
Tear checked the hallways for directions, finding a small plaque engraved with the semi-familiar foreign alphabet and arrows pointing the way. She turned down a corridor that would lead her to one of the ballrooms Neirenn had mentioned.
The melodist paused to knock before carefully releasing the latch on the door and swinging it inwards just enough to inspect the contents of the room.

And maybe observing how Tear used these fonons to heal could very well help her with that goal. Neirenn had been wandering the ground floor of the Actua Are since waking up, running through the list of spells she knew. Cleaning spells, conjuring splints and bandages, water... and manually helping with treating injuries too. Neirenn had found, through experience, that the sight of blood itself didn't bother her very much, so she didn't think that would present a problem. She'd managed to put together a small box of first-aid supplies, too.
She smiled when she came down the hall and saw Tear looking into one of the ballrooms. "Good morning!" she said. "I put together that first-aid kit, and I told the manager what we were going to do so he's not charging us very much for this. Does that space look okay to you?"

"Yes, good morning, Neirenn. I wasn't sure if I should meet you in the lobby or in one of the ballrooms, so I went searching for them myself." That was more or less the way of it. Tear knew that Neirenn was enthusiastic about this, but she couldn't have known just how enthusiastic.
The melodist turned to take a second look into the spacious room and nodded, "I think it should be fine, though a smaller venue may have worked just as well. As long as there's some room to move about, it should be fine." Still, with the high ceilings, Tear thought it might be easier to gather a larger number of seventh fonons into one area.
"Very good. I brought along some other supplies just in case they were necessary. Fonic artes themselves don't require any outside equipment, but I thought they might be useful when dealing with more traditional practices."

She walked into the huge space, looking up at the high ceiling but with no particular amount of awe. There were tables and chairs pushed against the walls for storage, but by and large the room was clear. Neirenn set her small first-aid kit down on the floor. "So how do you cast--or, use fonons, I mean?" Neirenn asked. Was it even possible to use a healing arte on someone who wasn't actually injured? Neirenn hoped so; she did very much want to see a demonstration. But if it wasn't, just hearing about how it was done would be good too.

Noting the slight echo, Tear followed Neirenn into the room.
"It's really very simple to use them," She lifted her pack from her shoulder and sat it carefully on the floor near Neirenn's first-aid kit. She considered her staff for a moment, and then placed it on the floor. Though she could channel fonons through the weapon, it wasn't necessary, particularly where healing artes were concerned.
"Though, explaining the technical aspects may be a little overwhelming to you at first. I believe I've already told you a bit about fonons. Where I come from, they exist at a basic level along with atoms. There were originally six types of fonons corresponding to 'elements'. Darkness, Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Light. Later on, a seventh fonon type was formed due to the heightened activity within the core of the planet. This seventh fonon, though not entirely understood, is the one we use for healing."
Tear paused for a moment and decided to proceed with explaining healing artes themselves. If Neirenn had questions, Tear was almost certain that she would ask.
"As long as one has the ability, one can use healing artes. They're performed in the same way other fonic artes are carried out - by opening one's fon slots and allowing seventh fonons to flow into them. Once the fonons are gathered, they can be directed outwards again. Depending on the arte, drawing a fonic glyph or reciting a chant may be required to complete it."
Tear extended a hand, took a slow breath, and opened her fon slots one by one, allowing her body to absorb any seventh fonons within the surrounding area. Nothing immediately seemed to be happening.

The need for glyphs and chants wasn't out of line with the magic she herself knew, either. Chants were required for more complex and advanced spells, like the one to call her elemental guardian, although glyphs were more rare.
She watched as Tear began to concentrate, standing quite still. Despite the lack of any visible sign, Neirenn could feel the energy in the area gathering towards her--it was faint, not like the normal magic that she understood, but it was there all the same. It was like hearing something in another language, one that was not simply foreign but alien. "So do the seven fonons exist in equal proportion everywhere, or does it vary?" she asked, unable to completely contain her curiosity despite not wanting to distract Tear.
oops
"No, the numbers of fonons in any given location vary. The same can be said of seventh fonons. Since their power can be harnessed, there are certain facilities that absorb large numbers of seventh fonons. In general, large concentrations of fonons can be found at the planet's poles, in the core, and in the fonbelt - or fonon ring - surrounding the planet. I'm not sure how it would work here."
A sufficient number of seventh fonons had gathered around Tear by now, as she forced to train her concentration of her open palm. Gradually her fingertips began to glow and a small glyph appeared above her hand.
"This is a simple healing arte. It's limited to a very small area, and can heal only minor wounds, but it is one of the easier fonic artes to learn. Some people find an arte of this nature reflexive and only need to be taught how to properly control it."
