The one place where it's Christmas all year round [active]

Character(s): Elves! And anyone who wants to interact with elves!
Content: Elves are working! Elves are everywhere!
Setting: Christmastown~
Time: Afternoon, week 17
Warnings: None for now. COME ON THEY'RE ELVES

Three hundred and fifty five days in a year, they're always work! There was always work to be done, after all, and thankfully the Heartless weren't up in the ornaments again - so irritating, that! The elves were moving about the snowfall, some holding presents, others holding tools. Christmastown was alive with work, though they would occasionally stop to mingle with one another.

And of course, if anyone were to interact with them, they would be very pleased to have a chat with them!

... or perhaps make them help work.

Either or. No worries. Really.

Urd was not a patient person. Actually, she was reckless. So when a magical door opened after a mysterious card appeared, she pretty much had to go through said door right away. After all, she hadn't taken any physical damage from the fight with that giant Heartless and she still felt in pique fighting condition. And she was tired of waiting around for other people to get some courage and jump in. She wanted to know what was on the other side and she wanted to know now.

Elves was something she hadn't considered an option.

She stood still, watching the busy activity all around and considered that maybe she'd been knocked in the head.

The door was a card. The card was inside a large monster. The large monster had appeared seemingly arbitrarily.

Somehow, this was unsurprising to Death. The gods had done stranger things on the Disc for the sake of a game; why should an inexplicably large castle run by inexplicably evil beings be any different?

The gods did generally have a sense of humor about things, true, but somehow Death believed that was not likely a factor here.

Regardless, he'd gone for the open door, interested in whatever the new realm would be. After the tropics of the last floor, the snow was unexpected, and after the relative desertion of the islands, the bustle of small people even less so. Nonetheless, it was new, and a possible step closer to the Organization. He'd take it.

He drew up to a woman - Urd, said the name above her head, along with a remarkably long lifespan - and stopped, taking in her shock at the situation.

THIS IS NEW.

To her credit, Urd resisted the urge to whirl around in surprise. But she was surprised, of course...who wouldn't be? To say nothing of his appearance, this newcomer's voice echoed in her head like cement blocks rubbing together. Even more jarring, however, was the overall sensation that he had no plane of existence in the flow of time. To an aspect of time like Urd, Norn of the Past, this was definitely a new experience.

"Tell me about it," she murmured dryly, turning gracefully to face him completely. Her deep purple eyes were half-lidded as she gave this being a thorough checking out. Not human, of course, but not precisely anything else she was aware of, either. Then again, this was Paixao (...wasn't it?). She'd come to expect new experiences here. "Not at all what I was expecting...and neither are you." She gave him a charming smile, holding out her hand.

"I'm Urd. Can't say I've seen you around before."

She reacted well to his appearance. Most people Death had met did not; then again, most people Death had met did not have Urd's lifespan. It was likely she had seen quite a bit. I FIND I AM RARELY EXPECTED, he replied calmly. Cursed, denied, and all too often bargained with, but rarely expected. Only the wizards were the exception to that rule, and they were a contrary lot to begin with.

He glanced at the proffered hand before remembering that human convention dictated he shake it. Right. He extended his own, taking hers in a firm grip. I AM DEATH. That was an unsettling introduction. DON'T WORRY - I AM OFF DUTY RIGHT NOW.

Urd had extended her hand out of habit, but as soon as Death's hand gripped hers, she deeply regretted it. Repressing the urge to shiver, smile weakening around the edges, she tried to think of how Belldandy or Genie would react to meeting Death; they'd probably invite him for tea or give him a fruitcake or something. They'd say something, at any rate.

"That's...good to hear," she muttered in response, blinking a few times. She let go of his hand (careful to not just snatch it back) and cleared her throat, crossing her arms. "So, Death...what do you make of this place?"

Death had quickly discovered that the "off-duty" joke tended to set people at ease - more so than they would have been otherwise, at the least. Still, Urd did not seem to be comfortable. This was to be expected, and he let it go, focusing instead on her question.

He gazed out over the small snowy town, taking in all the small beings - dwarves, likely, but dwarvish custom found it unseemly for dwarves to go about without beards. Perhaps this city had a different sort of culture, or maybe these were simply very small humans.

But his curiosity was getting ahead of him. He still had not answered Urd's question.

IT LOOKS LIKE ANKH-MORPORK AT HOGSWATCH, he replied, with the subsequent realization that she likely had no idea what he was talking about. AS THOUGH THERE IS A HOLIDAY COMING UP. WHAT DO YOU SUPPOSE THE SMALL...PEOPLE...ARE?

She found she was much more relaxed when not touching Death. Urd smirked, watching one elf quickly bustle by. "Christmas elves, looks like. Only...the real deal. Not the the mall ones." She chuckled, glancing at Death. "If Ankh-Morpork is anything like Christmas, they're getting presents ready for all the good boys and girls."

Most people were.

Of course, for the most part Death had no idea what Urd was talking about either. The elves he knew were taller, more ethereal, and much more dangerous than the squat little creatures in the town before them. Then again, it was a relief to know these small elves would not maul anybody.

I SEE. So it was like Hogswatch after all, only with more small dwarf-elf creatures.

Of course, that answered some questions and not others. He knew this was a new level in the castle, but what it held and its connection to the previous level - if there even was a connection - were still a mystery. There was a very simple way to solve that. SHALL WE EXPLORE?

Urd smiled. Once you got used to him, Death wasn't so bad. Though she still wouldn't be touching him anytime soon, his company as she explored this place would actually be welcome. "Of course! Someone's got to." She winked as if sharing a secret.

"Might as well be two highly powerful intangible concepts."
