After Dan
Characters: Valerie, Misha, Danny
Content: The gang go to rest shortly after this
Setting: Café Ersesat
Time: Night
Warnings: None at present.
Nobody said a word for awhile. They simply held hands, walking back from the area where they had battled their nightmares. If anyone had turned their noses at the bedraggled group, the trio didn't see, couldn't see. It was a moment that, after all the fear and the fright, that should have been celebrated. No more Dan, no more scared Danny, and the hope that his sister was alive. In that sense, they'd won. They had every right to celebrate.
Some prices to pay for the end of nightmare, though, can be pretty high.
Valerie could see it in their eyes, and she didn't need a mirror to know it was in her own. Misha looked so pained that it hurt Valerie, but even she was struck dumb. She never knew she could feel so tired, didn't know that Danny could look so lost. The group was somber, and they didn't need to talk to each other to figure they'd stay that way for a little while.
They reached Cafe Ersesat and Valerie flung the keep a few glittering leaves. It didn't matter. The three tromped up to their room, and they all walked over to the bed and lay down a moment. They were silent for a long time. Valerie stirred, then looked at Danny.
"So...you're the ghost kid."

"Please'su," she whispered, "just don't fight'su, please'su."

But she expected this, right? She had promised to protect Danny from Dan, and even if she was so worthless that she couldn't even do that, at least Dan was gone. What happened next? She looked at Misha and felt pangs of guilt. This wasn't the price she wanted to pay: this shouldn't have even happened. She glanced at Danny and saw that there was something sad in his eyes too, something that spoke volumes to her. How stupid could she be? Between his parents and friends dying and Misha breaking down, he must he blaming himself most of all. How could she bother wallowing in self pity when Danny's must be the worse of all?
"We're done fighting, I hope. If it weren't for you, we wouldn't be here right now. You...you saved us Misha. I don't have the words to tell you how grateful I am-WE are." Valerie said. She turned to Danny. "This isn't your fault Danny. No one told us to come around you, and we didn't run away when Dan was gunning us. You're important to us, and we care about you. Personally, I couldn't stay in Amity park knowing you were out somewhere, alone and scared. I wanted to...I wanted to try and protect you, however badly that blew up in my face."
That was all he needed to know for now. It was the truth, even if it wasn't the complete truth. That would come another day.
