The Meeting of Two Wanderers [Completed]

Character(s): Kenshin, Jintetsu
Content: A drifter and a rurouni meet. ^_^
Setting: Around L6-L7
Time: Morningish
Warnings: None.

He'd spoken to a lot of the city-folk the day before, and hadn't been able to get much from them at all, much to his dismay, however they had been very eager to teach him how to use the strange object he'd been given.

It had taken him awhile, and a lot of advice, but Kenshin soon had a slight grasp of how to use the thing, although how it worked still puzzled him no end, but he decided it wasn't worth trying to understand at the moment.

The object was just one of the many puzzles about this place. Saitou was another puzzle. Kenshin had no idea how he could think he'd 'taken care of' Soujirou, when ... well he hadn't. Soujirou hadn't seemed to know what Saitou was talking about either, so at least that was somewhat comforting.

But another thing troubled him, if Saitou and Soujirou was here ... where was everyone else? Could more he knew or his friends be here? He hoped they weren't, but ... if somehow they were he would have to find them!

Other than discovering if any others he knew were here, he was at a bit of a loss at what the do. He'd been simply wandering, which was something he knew well how to do.

He'd spent one night in a cold alley, but had managed, though now felt a little still today. Slipping his arms into his kimono, he walked along the cobblestone, as he wondered what to do. Oblivious of the strange stares of the city's people who paused as he walked past. He was used to it, so had no problems ignoring it.

Jintetsu had already been up all night. It had quickly become apparent that he'd woken up outside this city at sunset, not sunrise (which made no sense). He'd tried to stay in one place until morning, but, unable to fall asleep within a few hours, he'd finally gotten restless and started heading deeper into the city, keeping his eye peeled for a store. He hadn't found one yet.

The streets had been largely deserted all night, but as the sun and the people began to come out again, he was also receiving his share of odd looks. He didn't care. Let them stare at the man in the steel mask; he'd be gone soon enough.

For the most part, he kept his pace quick and his head down, only occasionally looking out from under his woven hat. Eventually he decided to cut through an alley and double back, but he emerged suddenly and accidentally bumped into someone at the other end.

As he recovered, he didn't see the other man's face past his own hat, but he did notice the sword at his belt. Well, there was only to hope he didn't take Jintetsu's inattention personally. He tipped his hat toward the swordsman, gave him a quick "Excuse me," and started to continue on his way.

Only a few steps away, though, the man's wafuku belatedly caught Jintetsu's interest. Now that he thought of it, that was the first person he'd seen in this city wearing normal clothes.

He stopped and turned back halfway to get a better look at him. The red hair was a bit surprising, almost as if the man couldn't decide whether or not he was a foreigner. It was weird, but then again, so was everything else about this city, so he ignored it. The city itself bothered him more.

"What han is this?" he asked succinctly, after a few seconds. He already thought he knew what feudal domain he was in, but a city this big couldn't have sprung up overnight there without anyone noticing.

Not Japan at all? "That's impossible," Jintetsu said firmly. Granted, given the evidence - the architecture, the locals' clothing, the fact that he'd never heard of anyplace called Paishō despite the sheer size of this city - it almost couldn't be Japan, but it couldn't not be Japan, either.

He did notice the similarity between Kenshin's journal and the "thing" he'd been given at the gate, which he'd put in his bag and hadn't looked at since, but didn't say anything about it.

The idea that this was a dream had never crossed Jintetsu's mind, to be honest. He knew his dreams.

The last question, though, he initially answered with silence. It wasn't any of this guy's business where he was from, especially since he'd only known him for about two minutes. The stranger hadn't even introduced himself. And if they really weren't in Japan at all, it was irrelevant.

"I'm just a drifter," he said eventually, and it was true. There was no place he called home anymore.

Jintetsu gave Kenshin an odd look; he was pretty sure "rurouni" wasn't a word. Sounded like it was supposed to mean something like "ronin," though, which he'd already guessed the man was.

"If this isn't Japan, then where are we?" he asked, getting abruptly back on topic. He was still pretty skeptical about the whole thing.

Jintetsu nodded once. "All right." It didn't really matter to him if this guy went on his way, but there was just one thing he wanted to check first. "By the way, have you seen a shop anywhere?" In a city this size, he wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't, but it was worth asking.

Jintetsu waited patiently through Kenshin's fiddling with the device, then leaned over to get a better look when it was offered. To say that the names were strange was an understatement. Almost all of them were either completely undescriptive, or in some foreign language. (Dutch, maybe...? If this wasn't Japan...)

It took him a few seconds to find Cid's Shop on the map. West-ish, it looked like. He wouldn't remember how to get there just from this, but he did have a similar device to this one in his bag, so if he needed a map again, he'd have one.

He nodded once. "I see. Thank you," he said succinctly, then turned and headed in the direction of the shop.
