Dodedo... [Active]
Character(s): Leon, Cloud, Aerith, Zack, and eventually YUFFIE!
Content: Leon and Cloud wait for someone to arrive.
Setting: The lobby of Morem o Lisboa.
Time: Saturday afternoon.
Warnings: None.
Leon knew, in the very least, Aerith would be prompt. But that didn't make the silence shared between him and Cloud any less awkward; he knew he had a lot to say—so many questions and such floating around in his head, but he dared not speak anymore, because as a solitary creature himself he understood how irritating it could be when encountered with someone who never shuts up (i.e., one Yuffie Kisaragi). Besides that, there was also his own pride, a slightly stupid desire to never be the first one to speak.
Some time passed, and it dragged on. The only noise Leon made, while he waited in that lobby, was the original shift of his leather clothes, or a soft cough or sigh; hardly anything noticeable, really, as there were other people bustling about, going on their own ways and such. Out of boredom, he idly began to count the number of threads in the carpet at his feet...

The door to the lobby was heavy, and she shoved with open with her hip, unsure of exactly where they would be in the Morem O Lisboa - but a quick glance around answered her question quite easily. A smile blossoming on her face, she waved and jogged over to them.
But she was slightly surprised to see Leon standing in the lobby - after his disappearance from the hotel, she hadn't known where he had gone. But to land over here, with Cloud? Convenient. Two out of three of her favourite boys in one place.

Cloud didn’t say much to Squall, and the reverse was true. Sitting in the lobby was quite boring. He was never much for conversation anyway. He was considering leaving, to get a drink perhaps, to or wander the hotel’s corridors, when the lobby’s large door opened. In came a brown-haired woman. She looked lost at first, but when her eyes fell on the two silent men, her face changed entirely, and she waved and went towards them.
Cloud had no way of knowing if she were one of Squall’s friends, or even someone he had known beyond the reach of his memory. “Squall,” he said under his breath, “is she someone you know?” He nodded slightly towards the advancing woman.

"Yes. That's Aerith," he said, standing up and heading over to her promptly, giving her a nod of acknowledgement as he stopped in front of her. "...I trust you got here without much trouble?" he questioned her quietly.

Pulling Leon into a quick hug and then turning to look at Cloud, she said, "Hey, Cloud. Long time no see. How've you been?"
He didn't look exactly as she remembered him - a bit more tired, a bit more coloured. There was something strained about him, and she couldn't put a finger on it.

So the woman was Aerith. She was the one who had made those bizarre allusions on the message board – and then laughed at him. He wasn’t sure how to regard the woman, so he’d stick to formalities. At the very least she deserved respect because she was Squall’s friend. He got up after she hugged Squall, moving to stand a few paces away from them, arms crossed. Then Aerith addressed him familiarly.
That was unexpected. He hid his confusion and cleared his throat. “Long time no see? I suppose. Forgive me, but I don’t remember ever seeing you before.” Maybe she remembered him from another world, like Squall did. Sometimes it was very frustrating having an unreliable memory.
no subject
No matter. His gaze followed Aerith as she moved to Cloud and addressed him, and then squinted his eyes thoughtfully at his reaction. "As you can see, Aerith, he doesn't have his memory quite in place. He doesn't remember us at all." A frown came over his face, and he headed back over to them, crossing his arms over his chest.

She frowned for a moment, feeling somewhat gobsmacked. How did one react to that, then? To discovering a long-time long-missing friend didn't even recognize them, let alone had forgotten everything about their friends?
"How did you forget?" she asked, concerned, "But no matter what happened, Cloud, we'll get your memory back. I promise."
What else could she say, really? But when Leon appeared to be losing his memories too - especially one from a few days ago - then she really had to say more.
"... yeaaah," she said to Leon, slowly, "his memory's not in place?"
She smiled, and prodded him in the chest lightly, quirking one eyebrow right back, and said, "Because I definitely saw you, remember? Cid and I got in contact with you through the message boards, and we took the train to the center of Paixao... that's why we went there in the first place. Cid rented the shop that day, remember? Yuffie tackled me?"

...Zack seemed to have slept all day. Again. In fact the vast majority of his time these days seemed to consist of sleeping, with bonus rounds of starvation and experiments to add to the fun. Not exactly the way he'd prefer to spend his unexpectedly regained life. It was time to stop sitting around and do things, even if he had no idea what yet.
"Hey, Cloud," he said, grinning as he made his way downstairs into the hotel's lobby. The sleep had done wonders for his health and sanity. "And, uh, other person." The scarred man looked roughly as broody as his friend did, oh dear. Leaving those two around each other for any length of time couldn't be healthy for either of them. They were bound to get caught in an inescapable chain reaction of angst. Or something.
The pink-clad third person, though, was a very welcome sight, and not just because she lowered the room's angst quotient considerably. "Aerith!" said Zack brightly, waving at her. "Long time no see. What've you been up to?"

And if things hadn’t been interesting or confusing enough, in strode Zack, all stupid smiles. In response to his greeting, Cloud simply rolled his eyes and shifted his weight. Zack’s presence would complicate things, as it always did. He watched as Zack greeted Aerith. He remembered from Zack’s whiny journal entry that someone had mentioned Aerith’s name, and he had responded in concern. Well, let them have their reunion. He’d stay and observe, even though there were a million more interesting things to do, such as procuring a new sword. He’d stay if only for the well being of Squall, to whom he’d promised lodging if he had no alternatives.

For a moment, she had been doubtful as to whether everyone around her was going insane, and she was the lone one with her memories - but this was an uncomfortable settle into reality. Aerith, in no way, wanted to worry them. So, she continued, "Weird things have been happening, and I'm a bit confused, but that will sort out eventually. How about you?"
She didn't feel as she should have felt.

But before he could address anything, a new man showed up. Leon narrowed his eyes distastefully at the scruffy character and decided right off the bat that he did not like him much at all. "Who the hell is this?" he said rather rudely all of the sudden-- he knew Aerith didn't know this man, and-- hey, he must have been that crazy guy Cloud had mentioned before. The one who fed him stories he didn't believe. All right then-- then he really wasn't going to like this guy.
Looking rather accusingly over him, he seemed to visibly tense as he looked between him, Aerith, and Cloud. "None of you actually know this guy, do you? I don't."
...He sure hoped he didn't know him, anyway. Could he be a lost part of their memories as well?
no subject
Hell, maybe he was just crazy, even if that was supposed to be Cloud's job and not his. Being killed and transplanted across worlds and Darkness-fied by Hojo was enough to turn anyone a little off-kilter.
"I'm Zack," he told bitchy scar-face. "Friend of Cloud's from way back. Sort of." Zack frowned. "Who the hell are you? I mean, does anyone here actually know you from before or are you just some nobody like me?"
no subject
That settled it. If she was forgetting things, she was going to work around it. Zack's apparent disappointment at her reply was disheartening, but made her want to know who he was, too. Stranger or not-so-strange, she'd find out.
"This grumpy one is Leon, and yes, I've known him for a long time," she said to Zack, giving Leon a tug on the arm. With a smile, she continued, "and I'm really sorry I don't... remember you, but... we'll try to sort this all out, right? Where do you know me from?"
no subject
"And then I died," he concluded brightly. "Long story, boring, morbid, save it for some other time."
"So how'd you get here from Midgar?" he asked after a moment, to break the inevitable awkward silence. "...If you even are from Midgar, I mean."
no subject
Hm. That was interesting. Why did Aerith refer to Squall as Leon? Had he lied or given some sort of alias during their meeting? Now Cloud had a reason to be suspicious. Things were hard enough to sort out without that mess adding to it. He sincerely hoped this little reunion would be squared away quickly so he could see where Squall-Leon-whoever-the-hell-he-was was staying. This was a boring conversation and he had little to contribute to it. Again, he would have rather spent his time roaming Paixao and learning it better. Dias did seem to think something strange was afoot. Otherwise, he’d love to find that Folios store and buy the biggest sword they had to offer. He felt very vulnerable without a weapon. Seeing Zack confident and grinning only reminded him of what he did not have anymore.
He remained watching the group. Later he could take Aerith aside and grill her on everything she remembered about him. Maybe there was a bit of truth in everyone’s stories. From the others’ impressions of him, he could start building his identity again, or at least start recovering the shadow of what he once was. It was something.

Shaking her head, Aerith said, "No, no, it's serious. I can't be forgetting people I've dated! Tell you what - I'll make it up to you. We'll go out again. And if we had some nasty break-up, it's okay, I don't remember it, we can start from scratch and jog my memory."
With a smile, she added, "Don't know anything about a Midgar, though. Sorry, I really must be losing it."
no subject
It took him a few moments to realize the conflict in his names, however. He swallowed unconciously, wondering what the man would think about his new "Leon" alias-- he'd adopted that, after all, to compensate for what he had lost before... but it was all here now, so he wasn't quite sure if he was Leon or if he was Squall anymore. Cloud had known him by his real name, so that was what he had told him...
This was all very frustrating, and this Zack idiot only complicated things. Leon was getting ready to ignore him entirely and let his mind wander, until he stated that he dated Aerith.
He bristled. His eyes took on a grave look-- and before their conversation could go anywhere else, Leon interjeted right after Aerith, thoroughly convince Zack was insane at this point, especially because of that whole "dead" thing: "She's never dated anyone. We don't know you, or about any Midgar, or anything having to do with you. Don't you get that?"
no subject
...alternate universes got really old really fast.
"Look," said Zack. "Maybe you're right, maybe I'm right, maybe we're all crazy and this is some kind of fancy nuthouse, but. The Aerith I remember didn't need anyone to take care of her. She can think for herself. Who the hell put you in charge of things around here?"
He really did want to take her up on that offer of a date sometime.
no subject
"Hey," she said, sharply, to Leon. But she looked at him kindly, a bit more understanding than she sounded, and continued, "Calm down. Everyone's a bit confused right now. I'm sure he gets it. We'll figure this out, okay? We'll get to the bottom of this, no matter what. Don't worry."
Moving her attention to Zack, she told him, "No one's putting anyone in charge. We can all work together. Thanks, though."
no subject
“Anyway, after this mess is straightened out, would you mind speaking with me privately? I have a few things I wish to ask you.” Cloud would rather not involve these two bastions of brilliance – er – men who claimed to know him with their two wildly varying stories. “It won’t take long.”
no subject
He looked at Zack with a glare, Aerith with a softer expression-- and then when he looked at Cloud, he was slightly startled. Was that a smile? Or at least, the beginnings of one-- it was odd to see that, after so many years. He eyed the blond's face almost dumbfoundedly for a moment, and then forced his gaze away-- ugh. Everything would be okay, if Zack wasn't here.
no subject
But even so, things would be just about perfect, if that Leon guy wasn't standing around getting in the way.
And as far as that went... "So, Leon, how do you know Cloud? Cause if there's some alternate universe thing going on, I guess the first thing to do is figure out who's from when and where and whether our histories connect at all."
no subject
She loved that smile, immediately, merely because it was such a treat. He was handsome when he smiled, or at least, vibrantly so. Aerith cared when people were happy, and was pleased when it showed.
But she was pleased she could make a really great peacekeeper, as she looked between the two boys. Instantly, the tension seemed to drop, judging by how they backed off. Hooking her fingers in the pockets of her skirt and tilting her head, she listened to them, stepping back so she wasn't standing between them.
no subject
Besides, letting both men go over their stories again would be helpful. Cloud could sort out the details and refresh his memory. He had no idea which one of their stories was right, or if there was even a right in a case like this. He also had Aerith’s side to weigh against theirs. Would hers corroborate either? Who knew. He hoped both were quick about sharing histories, at the least. The more time they spent measuring one another, the more time was wasted. And Cloud had already wasted more than enough time.

"Alright. Cloud and I used to be in our world's military together. We always stuck together, until one day Cloud was taken away and I got this scar--" he took a moment to gesture to the vertical, slightly raised mark on his forehead, and then let his hand drop to his side, "When trying to defend him.
"A little while later, the Darkness started to take over our home world, and a lot of people were lost when we tried to escape. Aerith, a few other people, and myself, attempted to escape together-- but Cloud was still lost. We had no choice but to continue on regardless, because the world was falling apart.
"Eventually, we got to this place called Traverse Town and have been living there ever since, looking for a way to stop the Darkness. That's it."

It just figured that Zack was the one who didn't have someone to back him up. Except Tifa, but she was around at the moment, so it was his craziness versus Leon's... broodiness.
What the hell. He might as well try to annoy the other man even more than he already had.
"That's funny," said Zack, "because my story's not all that different. Army buddies, bad things happened, I saved Cloud's life, blah blah blah. Except there was Sephiroth and his tentacled alien mother and a mad scientist instead of... 'the Darkness.'" His snort at that indicated exactly what he thought about such an idiotic-sounding force of evil.
"And let me guess." He jabbed his finger at the scar that cut across the bridge of Leon's nose. "You got shot in the face, but unlike me, you didn't die. Lucky bastard. "Which means that you're kinda-not-really an alternate version of me," Zack concluded. "That's fucked up, man."
no subject
Aerith nodded, slowly, and said, "I was with Leon and Cloud in Hollow Bastion since we were very little, but I wasn't in the military. I worked in my mom's flower shop. Tifa, Yuffie and Cid were there, too, but unfortunately, I don't think you guys remember the same ones as I do. Ever since the Bastion was consumed, I've been living with Leon, Yuffie and Cid... that's the gist of it, anyway."
With a slight hesitation to sort out the information, she added, bluntly, "And I know a Sephiroth, too, but probably not the same one. The one that Cloud - er, my Cloud -"
Lacing her fingers behind her back, she paused again, smiled, and corrected herself again with, "Well, not my Cloud, exactly, but the Cloud-history I know. The one he told me about."
no subject
Now he had Aerith’s side of things as well. Her story meshed best with Squall’s. She said they had grown up together; rather, all three of them had. In a place called Hollow Bastion. Not even the name rang any bells.
Ah, but one thing was common in both her story and Zack’s: the name Sephiroth. He should know who that was. Zack had called him General Pigtails. He seemed to play in both histories. Who was he?
The other thing out of all of this that had felt even remotely familiar was Aerith’s peacekeeping skills. It felt like something she did regularly, though he really wouldn’t know. Cloud decided keeping an eye on her would be his best bet. She might be his best clue in this crazy place. She seemed to be somewhat fond of the Cloud in her world, going by her haste to correct herself.
Other problems were sure to surface, though, when Zack strode forward and poked Squall’s scar. That would cause a scuffle like nothing else, as the vibe he’d received from Squall earlier was of a distinct “don’t touch me” flavor. Damage to any of Cloud’s potential memory sources needed to be avoided, as did causing a scene. Discretion was vital. So he spoke up.
“Zack. Don’t touch him again.” His voice was low and unmistakably serious.
no subject
Irritated, Leon was tempted to let out a soft growl under his breath as Zack came too close for comfort-- out of the corner of his eye he glanced to Cloud as he ordered him not to touch him and was slightly obliged. Moving a step back regardless, he re-crossed his arms over his chest and glared ahead. "Right. Don't touch me."
"Anyways... there was a Sephiroth, but he was lost too. Never liked him much, but he was the General. It doesn't matter anymore, though, that army is no more."
no subject
"All right, all right, no more invading your precious personal space," laughed Zack. "It looks to me like we've figured things out as much as we're going to, and if there's no way we can know which Cloud this is, can't we just agree to share him? Like it really matters which tragic past belongs to him."
no subject
"We can set him up with something a bit more... optimistic. At least until we sort out what's real and what isn't, hmm? There's far too much to talk about here - we should all go for dinner, or something."
no subject
Then Aerith came to his side and laced her arm with his. This was not something he expected or desired. Immediately his back stiffened. A stranger was touching him! Normally he would push away the offender, or give a good hearty punch to the face, but this was Aerith. A strain of familiarity, for her, anyway. She supposedly knew him, and if they were friends, why push her away?
But they weren’t.
Cloud eased Aerith’s arm off of his gently. “Don’t.” Especially with Zack right there. Zack knew Aerith too, and if they’d dated, this action could be seen as moving in on Zack’s girl. To fix the awkwardness resulting, though, he quickly said, “Dinner sounds fine to me.”
no subject
The final straw came not from Zack, but from Aerith. She had moved close to Cloud and put her arm through his, claiming him in a way. Those two had been close, of course, but still. It was not the same Cloud, so she could afford to be a little less friendly. But that was Aerith. However, it did not ease his mind any. A gesture of kindness or a gesture of claiming – either way, it was too much to take.
“I’m not going to dinner,” he said tonelessly. “I don’t have much of an appetite right now. Go without me.” He turned and headed for the door to the hotel. He stopped after a few steps. “Oh, and Cloud? Thanks for the offer, but I’ll be fine on my own. Don’t wait for me.” With that, he disappeared out the door.
