Time for Guilt [Completed]

Character(s): Riku
Content: Riku escapes from the Turks and finds Zack's latest journal entry.
Setting: The rooftops of Paixao, Joutenheim quarter, around K-L7
Time: Friday - late afternoon
Warnings: Teen angst

Riku easily eluded the Turks with a minimum of effort. It was difficult to pursue someone who moved in three dimensions when you could only move in two, not to mention if that someone happened to be an Olympic-grade gymnast.

Several blocks away, Riku crouched between two large chimneys in a small niche of someone's roof, just in case they should come up here looking for him. Tired as he was, he knew he wouldn't be able to get to sleep after the recent insanity. So instead, he settled down to browse the journals a bit more.

He'd written his good-bye letter to Sora (neglecting to mention that he would be sneaking back into their room tonight to return his friend's money bag) and identified both Axel's journal and one belonging to a friend of his. But perhaps if he kept looking, he might be able to find a clue as to where Axel was hiding out. He seemed pretty brash; it was possible his base of operations wasn't hidden away at all.

Or maybe it was in the jungle. Riku thought he might check there tomorrow, if he didn't find anything more today.

In spite of the fact he was completely alone up here, Riku put the hat he'd salvaged in his flight from the tavern back on before removing his blindfold, taking a moment of reflective pause to look at the black material lying there across his palm. It reminded him once more of his shame. Riku felt he could use the reminder.

And perhaps a higher power did, too, because the first journal he stumbled across in his second search looked like it belonged to a friend of Cloud's. Riku couldn't even think of the blond soldier without getting sick to his stomach. He knew he owed that guy some kind of apology, but how do you apologise for beating and raping someone when you weren't in control of your own body at the time? How do you apologise for something like that, period?

Looking at the recent entry, it seemed Cloud and his friend were in some kind of trouble. It mentioned Hojo. Riku's pang of guilt intensified. If something had gone wrong after he'd left, the least he could do was help them. So he posted a comment, trying to figure out what was going on.

Cloud didn't seem to want his help, and Riku wasn't about to identify himself in order to offer it. He wracked his brain, trying to think of another way.

Wait. Aerith knew Cloud. Yeah. She'd asked where he was...

Not too much later, following the thread, Riku had read all he needed to. Somehow, Cloud had never escaped Ansem's fortress. Hojo had started experimenting on him, along with a friend of his who must've come in after Riku was gone.

Cloud had discouraged his help, but the fact was: dude was a tool. In the same thread, he'd been encouraging Hojo to come back to wherever they were imprisoned. Like he was eager to get cut up or pumped full of Darkness or something.

No one knew the possible dangers of the situation or the fortress better than Riku. So whether Cloud wanted his help or not, he was getting it.

Quickly tucking his journal away and taking a moment to prepare himself, Riku launched himself over the rooftops of Paixao once more, this time headed for that Darkness looming in the distance outside the city; the gravitational pull he had been trying to ignore all this time.
