where i go, i just don't know... ( active / closed )

Character(s): Jecht & Auron.
Content: After Meg gets captured, Jecht seeks out his number one pal for advice / a sympatheric ear.
Setting: Actua Are.
Time: Shortly after the conclusion of this.
Warnings: Bromance.

As he rounded the corner at top speed, Jecht burst through the door of the Actua Are, drawing a good deal of attention to himself in the process. This had been the third location he'd tried -- he knew that Auron frequented the chain of hotels, but tracking down which one he was camped out at was a bit of a different story.

With a look of desperation about him, he heaved his torso onto the countertop, much to the desk lady's dismay. She leaned back as he leaned forward, giving her a serious look from underneath his bandana. "Auron... Where's Auron?!" he asked, breathless from all the running.

Luckily for Jecht, Auron was on his way out of the hotel at that very moment. At the sound of his friend's voice, Auron stopped and turned toward the desk, immediately taking note of how out of breath he was. "Jecht," Auron said, the single word both somehow a question and an acknowledgment. Whatever it was that had sent Jecht running over so quickly, Auron was sure it wasn't good.

Auron's eye widened a fraction as he was suddenly taken by the shoulders and assaulted by the loosely connected stream of words that poured from Jecht's mouth. "Jecht," Auron said again, this time a bit more forceful with his words. "Calm down and start again. You will get nowhere by panicking."

Auron had to admit, he was surprised. With the way Jecht's story had begun, he had expected it to end with the guards being injured. "And someone was taken in the process," he finished, able to gather at least that much from what Jecht had said before. "By who?"

Auron was silent a moment. Once upon a time he could have said that there were few places they could have placed her, but as more and more floors opened up, that was beginning to change. And then there was the question of whether or not this action was by the mayor's decision or if his hand had been forced to agreement. There was no doubt that the mayor was behind the greater enforcement of the rules, but there was something about the fact that people were simply being taken with no information about where a new jail might be that didn't sit well with him.

"We need information first. If it turns out they are only detaining her for awhile, we should be able to raise enough money to pay for her release." He doubted it would be that easy, but it was the easiest place he could think of to start.

Auron kept his more unsettled thoughts silent. Jecht was already in a poor state, and him getting more agitated wouldn't help matters. Once he calmed down and once they had exhausted the first idea, then they could worry. Now was the time to keep emotions guarded.

"You are aware that paying will technically cost us nothing?" Auron asked. "And should your plan fail, you will end up imprisoned too. Unless that is how you would prefer to see her again?" It was blunt, but in Auron's experience that was usually the best way to get things through to Jecht.

"The jail, I'd imagine. Or the mayor himself." Auron put his bets on the latter, personally, mostly because he didn't know where the former was. And even if they didn't quite get the mayor, someone under him might know where Jecht's friend would be.

"I suggest you wear a shirt."

Everyone has to wear them sometime, Jecht.

There was a short silence before Auron spoke up. "A shop," he replied flatly. "I will get one if you need it. No complaints." Auron didn't plan on getting anything special, but he had a feeling that nothing he was able to find would... suit Jecht's "tastes" to say the least.

Were Auron a younger and less mature man (or really had he ever been the type of man at all) he would have rolled his eyes. "You can always take it off when we leave." No one was asking him to wear the shirt for the rest of his life.

Auron would be lying if he said the idea didn't appeal to him on some level. He didn't care for the new mayor (not that he cared for the old one from what little he knew about him), and he didn't care for his policies. All they would do was strike up divisions among the people in the city if they hadn't already.

But he had learned quickly that it was better to not encourage Jecht when he was like this. "You can do it after your friend is safe."

Not to encourage him directly, anyway.

To be fair, Auron didn't really plan on making Jecht dress up that much. He cared for the dress code about as much as Jecht did, and didn't mind only meeting the minimum requirements. A shirt was about as much as he intended to get, and Auron didn't care about the size as long as it wasn't too small.

"You can always ask the mayor to pay for it for our trouble," Auron replied, taking his eyes off the shops for a moment to glance back at Jecht. As long as the man was set in his ways, he might as well do more than toss out orders and laws.

"If they did that, they would have to forbid their own citizens from entering their own establishments," he said. Auron hoped that would deter them from passing such laws, anyway. He had always been more comfortable in a warrior's clothes. While he was more than capable of formalities (even if he used them less now than he did in the past), formal wear, as far as Auron was concerned, had never suited him.

He stopped in front of a small shop. "Here." The prices, from what he could tell from the window, looked cheap (not that price actually mattered, but he would rather not have to waste any more time gathering items to trade if he had to), and any shirt would do.

Auron entered and returned in only a few minutes, and handed the shirt--plain and white--over to Jecht. "You can button it up on the way."

Auron shook his head. Of course Jecht would spin it around like that. "It would be better to leave a good impression this time," he said, and stopped walking a moment to fix Jecht with a stare. "Keep a cool head." Auron emphasized each word. "If you attack from the start we will go nowhere."

It would be better if Jecht could pretend to have some formality in the situation, but that was likely asking too much of both of them (Auron had enough difficulty mustering up an ounce of respect for the mayor himself).
