Leave the Lights On [Active]

Character(s): Urd, Genie, Yorda.
Content: Urd and Genie check up on their totally not adopted daughter.
Setting: Mao's lab in St. Destino Hospital
Time: Week 34, afternoon
Warnings: None.

Urd rode sidesaddle on a broom as she flew across the sky, low under the ever present domed ceiling. Weary and lacking her usual luster, she had opted for the broom rather than her usual solo flying as she made the trip to St. Destino. Her heart was hurting and a part of her wanted nothing more than to retreat somewhere quiet and remote so she could be left alone. But Yorda had sounded so frightened...and in the wake of a new arrival named Geoffrey, almost desperate. Urd told herself she was going simply to check up on the girl. If she happened to get comfort from her, that was all the better.

She rode in silence, feeling Genie's presence as he flew behind. When the reached the tall structure of St. Destino, she lead the way to the hospital wing, gliding into an open window.

Genie squished against Yorda, able to wrap his arms around the girls with ease and embrace them both. A joke in light of the moment, even a piece of wisdom, came so effortlessly to mind but Genie remained silent. The amount of love that radiated from the pair likely came with its own constellation of health effects after prolonged exposure. Yorda (hopefully) didn’t need to hear what she should have felt. She always would have them. Forever and ever and ever.

Yorda made a small noise as she was quite happily squished by Genie as well as Urd. She loved them both dearly, and she knew they knew that. When she'd been locked away, all alone and afraid, on her island, she never would have dreamed of being loved and cared for, much less by so many people. She returned the embrace, letting out a laugh of sheer joy. The princess had never imagined that she would ever have been so happy.

A simple shrug was all Urd would receive from him. Genie was not ashamed of any of his belongings (except perhaps a certain bra). Romance novels were only the start. “I have some make-up too if you’d like.” He offered. “Plenty of soft tones that would go great with your complexion. Or, we could work on bringing out your eyes. Deep, earthy colors would work best. Greens, golds, blues, a few shades of purple…” Genie did his best to resist applying the said colours right there and then, only going so far as to summon the small makeup kit and hold it out for her taking.

Yorda wanted to ask Urd what a romance book was, but the last time she had done that, the reaction from both Urd and Genie had puzzled her more than whatever mysteries lay beyond the covers of said books. Instead, the girl settled for shaking her head. "I own nothing except my dress and my journal," she replied. She'd never needed another dress, as for all her mother's neglect, she'd at least given her a dress that had yet to even so much as tear.

The princess blinked at Genie's explanation, accepting the kit as she stared at it, wondering what it was. "Thank you," she told him. "What is make-up?"

“Lipstick?” he repeated, almost offended by Urd’s question. “She’s too young for lipstick. It’s all about lip gloss. She’s got watermelon, cherry, strawberry, vanilla, grape, green apple, cantaloupe, bubble gum, Dr. Pepper, and Cinnabon. That one’s my favourite, by the way.” Holding up the stick of lip gloss for the two to see, Genie smiled. “Tastes like icing.” Without so much as asking first, he unscrewed the cap and gently applied the gloss to Yorda’s lips.

What was make-up? It may not have felt like it, what with both Urd and Genie having ignored her question, but Yorda was about to find out.

While Urd and Genie were discussing purple and lipstick and lip gloss, Yorda was looking confusedly from one to the other, completely lost. Wouldn't anyone describe to her what it all was? Her rather disjointed train of thought was derailed by Genie putting something on her mouth. The girl immediately stepped back, slightly startled, and licked at it curiously. It was sweet, but waxy, and Yorda made a bit of a face.

"If it is for eating, why did you put it on me?" she asked.

Genie had been about to explain to Yorda that the gloss was not intended to be food before his lips met Urd’s. His eyes widened with surprise, then slowly closed themselves as he was succumb to the irresistible taste of cake icing. He sighed happily when he drew back, appearing to be in a dream like state. “Delicious…” And he didn’t just mean the lip gloss.

Yorda, meanwhile, was still completely lost, but at the mention of "delicious", she remembered that she had yet to feed them. "I am sorry!" she exclaimed suddenly, moving back towards the kitchen. "I have not served you dinner yet." Perhaps Genie's mention of something delicious (whatever it was) meant that he was hungry. Luckily, the chili shouldn't have cooled down that much. In fact, it should be at just the right temperature for serving.

The mention of Yorda’s chili could not have been a greater wake up call. Instantly Genie had ‘woken’, his dreams invaded by the same flames he had felt burning down his throat when he had tasted the girls cooking. He peered cautiously into the kitchen, lingering in the doorway alongside the goddess as though there had been some unseen force preventing them from entering the room.

“Yes, but we’d love to take some home with us for later.” Love may not have been the appropriate word but Genie did not want to go hurting the girl’s feelings. She had put hard work into the meal, he was sure. And as a sort of gift to them, he had to show they appreciated the thought behind it. Maybe it could clear the kitchen drain since someone had last tried dumping their charcoal casserole down it with a pan of bacon grease. That was as long as it didn’t burn through the Tupperware first.

"Of course I have to feed you," Yorda replied, turning to look back at the two. "You are guests here." How could she not show them hospitality, especially after they'd come all this way just to see her? She began moving back to the stove to serve them when she heard Genie's thoughts on the matter. "Are you not hungry now?" she asked them, concerned. If they weren't hungry, maybe they'd already eaten before they'd come here.

She tilted her head at the two of them, watching. Genie had brought a cake, but they had yet to eat it. If they didn't want food, why had they brought some?

Genie remained in the doorway. Urd was without doubt out of her mind. That chili would send her straight to the hospital. She didn’t have to do this, he didn’t want her too. Specifically because he would do his part to support her and have to eat the chili as well so long as she did. Unfortunately for him, while anticipating her hurried retreat, he instead found her seated at the table, boldly ready to taste her poison. Her smile may have appeared weary but she showed no sign of leaving any time soon.

Slowly, he slunk into the kitchen and sat himself beside her. He said nothing, sure Yorda would know to serve him too so long as he too was seated at the table.

Looking from Urd to Genie, Yorda looked confused. Despite Urd's reassurance, their expressions seemed... strange. Instead of serving them, Yorda merely spooned the chili into some tupperware and offered it to them. "If you are not hungry, you do not have to eat it now," she told them. She didn't want them to feel obligated to eat when they truly didn't seem hungry, but at least, she wanted to give them something for later. The princess moved to put the kettle on, intent on at least giving them some tea. Surely it wouldn't do any harm to give them something to drink.

Reluctantly, Genie accepted the Tupperware from Yorda while Urd gave a breath of relief. Whether or not they would actually eat the chilli was debatable but in the mean time by no longer important. They would worry about it when they got home - if the chilli even made it home. Genie placed the container down beside him and eyed it suspiciously while he listened to the two girls.

Why were Urd and Genie reacting so strangely? Yorda watched their faces, completely confused as usual as she filled the kettle with water and set it on the stove. "I enjoy cooking very much," she replied, wondering why in the world Urd would ask such a question. Mao had never made Yorda do anything, though he didn't seem to mind the girl cooking and cleaning. She'd even helped him out in his laboratory a few times, and she was learning so much from him.

"I am happy to help," she continued as she moved to sit down with Urd and Genie. "I like living here."

“Even for a visit.” Genie quickly added to the notion of Yorda returning to the house. He pondered the consequence if Yorda were to bring Mao along with her but spoke nothing of it. Though he may not have agreed with some of his actions, Mao was still welcome in their home. He had not forgotten what the demon had done for him and owed him a great deal. Swimming lessons had been a far from fair reward.

Relaxing in his chair, the genie smiled at Yorda. “You’d like Al. Everybody likes Al. Except for maybe Razule. Well, Razule and Jafar. Actually, now that I think of it, the fruit merchant in the bazaar wasn’t terribly fond of him either… But you’d like him! And Nana, she’s such a sweet girl.”

"I would like to visit," said Yorda with a smile. She wouldn't leave Mao, but that didn't mean she couldn't see those she'd come to consider family (even if she didn't really know what that was). She liked helping people out whenever she could, and the least she could do was try and repay the people who had been so kind to her.

She smiled again at Genie's ramblings, and nodded. There was hardly anyone she didn't like, come to think of it.
