An Expected Meeting [Closed. Complete]

Character(s): Link, Sheik
Content: Sheik has something to tell Link.
Setting: Jogo da Crianca
Time: Afternoon-ish
Warnings: Lack of action perhaps? Otherwise, none.

Link headed to Jogo da Crianca early. First of all, he had nothing else to do, and second of all, he was eager to see Sheik. He obviously knew something, and Link wanted to know what it was. It had also been a little while since he had seen the Sheikah, the last time being in the middle of the ice cavern on the edge of Zora's Fountain.

There were plenty of people walking around, and in some places on the streets, Link had to weave and dodge through large crowds. Thankfully, Jogo da Crianca didn't have such a dense population through it. Instead of finding a bench to sit on and wait, Link climbed a decently sized fake tree and rested on one of the larger branches, his back resting against the truck. It was his preferred place to rest, since he had been raised in a forest.

"You're early."

Sheik had a knack for appearing out of nowhere. One moment she was nowhere to be seen, and the next, she was leaning with her back against the same tree, below and opposite Link's position, arms folded.

(Yes, Link, she did always have to do that. It was sort of her thing by now.)

Sheik nodded, only a slight movement. "I did. It's to do with the nature of this place... which, presumably, you've already heard some about." That was an invitation to share; she'd rather not waste time telling him things he already knew.

Hm. It seemed she had her work cut out for her. Sheik pushed off from the tree trunk, walking a few paces while she formulated her explanation.

"It seems no one has," she said eventually, stopping with her back to him. "This place has drawn in a great diversity of visitors. Heroes and villains... fairies and demons... all pulled from their own unique worlds, with no known way to return. But that is only part of the nature of Paixao."

Sheik shook her head. "No. They don't." She'd been briefly to all four gates at one point or another, and hadn't sensed anything particularly magical about them. They were nothing more than doors.

"Even so," she went on, "did we truly enter this place by a gate? ... It follows, then, that we won't be able to leave by one." Her eyes flicked backwards over her shoulder. "But there may still be a way.

"Listen, Link. For all its size, this city, this island, is nothing more than a single room in a great castle." Whether it was an illusion, or had some degree of reality to it, was immaterial at this point. "Hidden in each of these rooms lies a door to the next. The first, in a church at the end of the world; the next, in an island cave."

She turned to face him fully, arms at her sides. "The way is perilous, and what awaits at the end, I cannot say. There are many dark forces at work in this castle." Her eyes looked eastward automatically, remembering her failed attempt to investigate City Hall.

"... There's the Organization, as you mentioned," Sheik said, pulling herself back to the topic. "A cadre of thirteen who will do anything to regain their lost hearts. No one seems to know where they are based, but the most dangerous of them is supposedly a woman called Larxene... or 'Cora,' as she might introduce herself."

Of course, she had no idea Link had already met this woman, under a different name entirely; had she known, she would have spent more time on it. Instead she turned to what she saw as the more pressing danger, not least because it had nearly killed her a short while ago.

"At the center of this city, though, is another dark force - the self-styled Mistress of All Evil, Maleficent. ... She may even be the one responsible for bringing us here." Sheik included that as a possibility, not a fact, but it still made the most sense to her, falling well within her usual parameters for evil. "She commands an army of shadow creatures known as the Heartless, dangerous in their own right, and even on her own she is a witch of great power." No pretender could concoct an aura of darkness that thick and foul. "As you are now, you cannot defeat her."

Here she paused, watching him. If he had any questions or protests about that, now would be the time to voice them.

Sheik didn't answer right away. Truth be told, she didn't know. She didn't know who was responsible for all this, or what should be done. Even what could be done. For all the information she'd gathered over the past few weeks, she still felt as blind as a newborn animal... and as weak.

She had already dragged Link into so much trouble in the past seven years, asking him to risk his life time and again for the sake of someone who was basically a stranger to him. But there was nothing for it. He was her sword arm, the strength to her weakness. She needed his help.

"... Search the castle," she said at last. "Follow the upward path to its pinnacle, and find out what lies there. Uncover the truth behind this world of illusions."

"The Heartless are mindless beasts. Treat them as you would any monster." That, at least, was straightforward. She personally relished the idea of seeing those wretched creatures skewered on the Master Sword. (W-well. As much as she allowed herself to relish anything.)

"As for Maleficent and the Organization..." Sheik frowned. She would rather not admit her ignorance on the subject. "... They operate behind a close-kept veil of secrecy. Much of what they do, they do unseen and unsung." She looked directly into his eyes now. "That's why, Link. Before you can do anything to stop them, you must peel back the layers of deception that surround them. Otherwise, all your efforts are in vain."

"Mm." Sheik nodded once. Wandering wasn't exactly how she would have put it, but it was the most apt description of what they were actually doing.

"... The first door stands in a church far to the southwest, outside the city gates," she said. Unseen, a Deku nut slipped into her palm. "We will meet again, beyond it. I'm counting on you, Link."

Then, in a flash, the nut burst against the ground, and when the light cleared she was gone.
