Misery Loves Company [Active]

Character(s): Megara, Knuckles
Content: Echidna meets girl.
Setting: Niflheim Gate
Time: Afternoon, week 18
Warnings: None.

It was too much. At least in her own world, she had more room in her cage. Megara could almost fool herself into thinking she could outrun Hades, that he wouldn't just summon her to his lair whenever he wanted. But in this walled city, his presence was unavoidable. Sure, he'd been pretty hands-off since she arrived, but he was here and he'd gone out of his way to remind her of this fact.

She felt the familiar itch to run, as hopeless as that habit was. This stupid city with its stupid prisoners who were too stupid to accomplish anything that mattered! Teamwork and friendship would set them free? Please.

So now Megara stared down the guard at the gate, hands on her hips. "Look, pal, one way or the other, I'm getting out of here." To punctuate this, she tried to side-step him, only to be blocked quickly. She growled in frustration, throwing her hands up. "This is unbelievable!"

Knuckles hadn't been in the mood to watch over the island any longer - it was no replacement for home (and besides, the Master Emerald wasn't there). Still, it was better than the bustling city, full of mindless idiots with their strangely blank stares and equally blank smiles, so why was Knuckles returning? The answer was simple: he needed to look for more clues about this place, and Paixao seemed the best place to get them. He growled at the guard with his back turned to the echidna, not hearing Megara's exasperated outburst. "Hey, punk," he growled, "you'd better get out of my way."

To his surprise, the guard finally stepped aside to allow the guardian through, and go through Knuckles did, brushing past the strange woman without so much as a glance. What interest did he have in a stranger right now, unless she could help him (and Knuckles doubted that she could, anyway)?

Short, red, and tentacled?! Was that woman seriously talking about him? The guardian whipped around, frowning. "They're dreadlocks, lady," he told her, before feeling her put her hand on his shoulder - and then he froze. What was she doing now? His anger melted away in favor of outright embarrassment, and he mumbled his answer. "As long as you can shove your way past, they leave you alone," came the reply, Knuckles very determinedly not looking in the strange woman's direction. "And no, there's not a way out."

Yet.

After a few moments, Knuckles managed to look up at the woman, very determinedly keeping a flush off his face; talking to girls was always an awkward experience for the Guardian, for some reason. He did, however, give a snort of sarcastic amusement at Meg's statement; of course there wasn't any sense in this crazy place. If there were, he wouldn't be here. None of them would and heck, this whole island (or world, or whatever it was truly caused) wouldn't exist! But that was something to ponder later.

"I come from Angel Island, where I'm the Guardian of the Master Emerald," he replied, a hint of pride in his voice even now, while he was separated from his duties. "What about you?"

"Never heard of the place," Knuckles shrugged. Then again, there were a lot of things here that he'd never heard of, never even would have imagined, so it was better not to doubt. His eyes darted to the gate as Megara indicated it, and he shook his head. "There's a lot out there," he explained, "but for some reason, those idiots don't want people to leave," he explained. "If you insist, they'll let you through most of the time." They must have been in a bad mood to not have let the woman through - at least, that was what the Guardian figured to be the issue here - but she'd asked him what was out there, not for theories.

"There's the Destiny Islands, and some weird place called Halloween Town," he explained. "I mostly live on the islands, and I haven't been to that weird town yet."

Knuckles glanced at the guards. They'd never given Knuckles much in the way of trouble - but maybe that was because he could pound them into the ground without so much as a second thought if he needed to. That wasn't to say he would, but the fact that it was there may have provided the guards with an incentive to get the heck out of his way. He looked back at Megara at the question. "I don't like the city," he replied. "Too many people. At least the islands are quiet most of the time."
