Time to Get Some Bearings... [Closed]
Character(s): Ise Nanao
Content: Another shinigami enters Paixao and finds herself in the Joutenheim area, not quite sure where she is, and is trying to get her bearings. When rain starts to fall, she heads off in the direction of the Actua Are hotel in the Joutenheim Area.
Setting: Joutenheim Gate area, and then on the way to Actua Are nearest said gate.
Time: Thursday mid-morning
Warnings: None.
She woke slowly, and the first thing she thought was: the air did not smell like the Fourth Division Headquarters. In fact, it smelled like dirt, and wide open spaces, though she did not smell anything organic like grass or such.
She could hear a slow steady shuffling, like hundreds of feet moving in one direction. She was suddenly reminded of the way new souls were brought into Soul Society, and she wondered if she had somehow been brought near that area. She told herself that if this was another one of Aizen's schemes, she would have to get back to the Seireitei as soon as possible and find her captain so that she could make her report, and he, in turn, would bring the matter to the attention of the other captains of the Gotei 13. After all, if this sort of thing could happen to a vice-captain, it could quite possibly happen to a captain.
However, when her vision finally cleared and her head stopped spinning, she realized that she was nowhere near Soul Society. She also realized that she was leaning against something, so she stood up, taking a few moments to dust off her hakama, and then turned.
Her breathing all but stopped as her eyes widened in stunned surprise. This was not Soul Society. Those were not the walls of the Rukongai. And those people shuffling through that gate were certainly not souls.
"Where am I?" Ise Nanao asked herself quietly. Had Aizen's plan worked after all? Was he somewhere nearby? Her killer instinct kicked in as she narrowed her eyes and allowed a small sphere of energy to pool into her right hand until it glowed, the power just waiting to be used and unleashed as necessary. She looked around, trying to sense for his presence - or for Gin's or Tousen's, for that matter - but felt nothing. She did feel something else though, something unusual that she could not name, but since it was not coming anywhere near her, she decided to let it go.
She relaxed, the sphere of energy in her hand disappearing as she looked around to take stock of her current position. She was in a strange place far from Soul Society, and as far as she could tell there were no other shinigami nearby. Of course, they were probably in the city, and that entailed entering it to find them.
Well, there really was nothing to it but to do it, was there? With that thought in mind, Nanao approached the line of people who were slowly walking in through what was indeed a gate, only this one was more magnificent than anything that Nanao had ever seen. It was enormous, and featured two giants with their clubs crossing at the top to form the archway of the gate. The image sparked Nanao's curiosity, but she decided that she could ask about it later.
She fell in step behind the last person in line - a young man no older than twenty, perhaps, with a rather distant and vacant look to his face that made Nanao wonder just what he did for a living. "Excuse me, sir, but may I ask you a question?"
The young man turned, and blinked upon seeing her, but did not react any more than that. "Yes?"
She pointed to the city. "What is the name of that city?"
"Paixao," the young man responded.
"Pai...shao...?" The name rolled off Nanao's tongue with a strange cadence, while simultaneously making a small stone drop in the pit of her stomach. "I see. And what of that gate?"
"Joutenheim."
"Oh. Thank you very much for your time." Nanao withdrew as the young man turned away without even a mumble of a "You're welcome," giving Nanao time to think of her current predicament. Her first priority was to find a way back. That was the most important thing. If this whole thing had something to do with Aizen, then it was imperative that her superiors find out what had happened.
The line went slowly, but steadily, and at length she found herself standing in front of a bland-faced woman who was giving her this even, measured look. "Name?"
Nanao paused, considering whether or not she ought to give her real name, but then decided that, even if Aizen and his cronies were behind this, they might as well know just who they were going to deal with. "Ise Nanao, Vice-Captain of the Eighth Division under Captain Kyouraku Shunsui."
The woman took a note of all of that, but did not seem to react much to it. After doing so, she handed a small, black item to Nanao. "Take this with you. You're going to need it."
Nanao stared at the item suspiciously, but took it anyway and passed through the gate into the interior. When she was inside, she stood off to one side and started fiddling with the device. She quickly found out that it was remarkably similar to the items that the Twelfth Division came up with, although this was infinitely more advanced than anything they had ever produced.
Fiddling a little more with it allowed her to discover its primary feature: a journal of some sort, that allowed her to write what she wanted to by typing using the very small buttons that had letters printed on them. Said buttons were painfully small and the only way that she could press them was to type using her thumbnails, which was not very graceful when compared to writing with brush and ink on paper. Still, she could see the advantages of having such a toy, since it would allow her to keep regular records of her time here. When she got back, she would be able to show these reports to her captain.
Another feature that she discovered on the little item: a map. Nanao decided that, if she was going to be staying here for a while, she might as well learn how to get around. So, with that thought in mind, she wrote out a report to her captain, and then started fiddling with the map, hoping to get her bearings in this strange city.
That was when the rain began to fall.
Hissing in annoyance, Nanao quickly closed her journal, and tucked it away under her gi, hoping that doing so would prevent it from getting wet, and hurried down the road. Recalling as much as she could of the map, she knew that if she followed this road, she would reach a place that was called the Paixao Central Station, and that somewhere to the east there would be a hotel called Actua Are. She assumed that, somewhere along the way, she would be able to find something or someone that would help her.
At least, she hoped she would.
