Ivan hadn't actually intended to come to the golf match; he really didn't know anything about the game, and in the absence of a reminder he'd quite forgotten it was even taking place. It was just by chance that he'd decided to come to Joutenheim today, with the intent of helping out any newcomers who happened to pass through the gate.
Thus, he found the event with little difficulty (thanks to a certain blue crier) but rather a lot of surprise. He remembered the announcement, belatedly, and to a lesser extent what one was supposed to do there, but he wasn't sure he'd expected anything to come of it. Obviously, it had. He even thought he heard his name mentioned, but by the time he got close enough to the gate, it had passed and there was no way to be sure.
What was most surprising was the fact it was taking place outside the domes. For all the time he'd been here, Ivan had never actually set foot outside them. He'd always had the impression it was even more dangerous than the inside. Where he'd gotten that impression was impossible to say, but it held him in for a bit longer, hemming and hawing until his curiosity at last got the better of him. And even then he didn't leave, so much as snuck quietly past and hoped no one was looking.
He was only marginally less uncomfortable approaching the table where Genie sat, and glanced over his shoulder once before he got there. "Is this the, uh..." he trailed off.
