take what you can get [ACTIVE]
Character(s): Rikku, Kid, Reno, Tak
Content: Arrival.
Setting: Niflheim Gate.
Time: Late Afternoon.
Warnings: Nope, none.
Oh, she was calling. Rikku lifted her head just as Yuna and Paine turned to face her. The three shared a look and it was apparent that they all understood. It was never a fieldtrip when they had to report back to Maleficent, especially when there was absolutely nothing to say. Lately there hadn’t been any activity with Leon and his crew, so what were they supposed to do? Maleficent promised them treasure if they completed their secret mission, but that was starting to become a much more difficult task to accomplish then that had originally assumed. Coming back with no news just wasn’t an option for them, and as much as Rikku liked to boast their oh-so-fearless nature, Maleficent was certainly the exception to their courage.
“Yunie, I’ll go first! I can find out if she’s gonna be really mad then come back.” It sounded noble enough, but the other two could most definitely see past this show of bravery. Wringing her hands together was probably what gave it away, now that she thought about it. Before the pair could open their mouths, though, Rikku vanished in a swirl of yellow and orange. They may have known she was nervous, but they would never insult her and refuse her order.
Oh, wait, Paine would. Drat.
All of that seemed to lose its importance the moment she materialized again. Green eyes blinked once, twice, then a third time just to make sure she registered everything correctly. This wasn’t the dark and creepy castle of Maleficent. In fact, it was more the complete opposite, wasn’t it? What a strange place this was. Rikku hung in the air for a moment longer, surveying the area for anything alive when a voice, soft and somewhat cheerful, said, “welcome to Paixao.” The small fairy spun around, floating back a few spaces before getting a good look at her greeter. She opened her mouth to question the genuity of such a welcome, but the mysterious person interrupted with the giving of a weird device.
It was probably the same size she was, and at first Rikku wasn’t sure what to do with it. The person offered it again, holding it out further for her to take. Well, what was treasure was still treasure no matter how weird it looked. Rikku accepted the gift, arms wrapping around as much of it as she could before she was ushered away. “Hey, but I still— Wait, I’m not— Come on, listen to me!”
Well, there was no point arguing after that...

All right, so she hadn't been. It had sort of popped out of her mouth. She had to get out of the city for a while; at least take a walk to clear her head, away from all of these people. She had chosen a gate on her map and stalked to it, giving dark glances to anyone in her way. She was on her way out when she nearly stumbled into someone who looked like... a fairy?
"Well, bugger me," said the thief, crossing her arms and looking amused despite her annoyance, "I didn't except to find one of you in here."

"Yeah, the guards never wanna say much," she replied. "Cheerful blokes, though, ain't they?" The thief tilted her head, nodding. "I talk when I want," she agreed, "and I'm in a bit of a talkin' mood right now." At Rikku's question, she looked thoughtful. "We all got busy lives outside o' this place, looks like. I dunno how we come here, but people from all sorts o' worlds are brought here."
Kid grinned at the much smaller girl. "Who're you? Me name's Kid."

She nodded, flipping blonde bangs out of her face. "Yeah. There are lots of people here that aren't native - and I'll bet me bum there's a way back." There had to be; every way in had a way out, however difficult, and Kid intended to find it. She couldn't help but laugh at Rikku's introduction, though. "Nice t'meetcha. Where're you from?"
no subject
Besides, he'd heard something that seemed right up his alley. 'I'm in a bit of a talking mood right now,' the not-tiny girl had girl said. Something he was almost always in.
And hey, no time like the present right?
"Might be, might not be. Ain't exactly like I've tried breakin' it." Yet.

She whipped around at the sound of a male voice, her bright blue eyes flickering over the stranger in order to size him up. Her attention, however, was drawn right back to Rikku when the fairy flew into her face. "Male-what? And your world is gone?" Kid had never heard of that happening before. Kid shook her head. "Nah, I've not even heard of Traverse Town."
She looked back to the red-haired stranger. "Who're you?"
no subject
Okay, so maybe 'everything' was a little bit of an exaggeration. But really, that wasn't his problem.
"Name's Reno. An' I ain't heard 'f Traverse Town either."

... And Rikku was supposed to be spying on someone. Somehow, the fairy didn't seem to be a bad person, but one never knew. Kid decided to leave that alone for now and looked over at Reno. "Nice to meet you, mate. I'm Kid."

As for things-of-possible value, he had more than a few, mostly tucked into pockets for the time being - the most obvious being his EMR (currently folded up) and a few spare materia. The rest were far less obvious from a simple casual glance but no less potentially valuable for that.

She laughed again, gesturing at the two. "I think it suits ya, Reno." Not that she knew him, but hey, it was funny.

Come to think of it, there weren't any that he knew of, and Reeve's robot toy thing didn't count. Not to mention it couldn't fly. Not unless Reeve had modified it since last he'd seen it.
"Hey, I go to a lot 'f work t' get it lookin' like that!" Reno retorted. He liked his spikes, and if he'd wanted his hair to lie flat he'd have been able to sleep in longer in the mornings.
"An' 'll be sure t' tell th' boss that th' name in my file ain't what he should be callin' me, then."

There was no point, after all, in getting different clothing when her current set was suiting her just fine.

"Y'know, ribbons might kind 'f jeopardize th' manliness of your chosen war-steed." Besides, he wasn't entirely sure what Rufus would think if he came home with ribbons in his spikes and if they were going to attack his spikes there was no guarantee that his ponytail was going to remain untouched.

"Oh, come off it," the thief laughed, addressing Reno. "Y'know, there're plenty o' menfolk who wear ribbons, an' they don't seem bothered by it." Then again, those men were what were commonly known as dandies, but Reno didn't exactly need to know that.
[ooc: Sorry I took so long in replying. D: Life decided to sneak up on me and beat me in the face.]

Not to mention that between his slightly slouching posture and the more than slightly disheveled shirt and suit-jacket it should have been fairly obvious that he didn't particularly care about how he looked. Or at least not to the same extent to the kind of guys who generally wore ribbons did.
But since he couldn't see that he'd be able to successfully talk his way out of this, he'd follow along for the time being.

The thief laughed aloud at Rikku's antics; she was finding that she liked the girl. "Nah, I've not really got a place," she replied. "Been too busy taking care of me own hide to relax." That, and she didn't really want anyone to know where she had been storing her "findings."
no subject
"May as well," he answered with a shrug. He could always take them out again later. And so what if Rufus laughed at him for having ribbons in his hair? It wasn't like he wasn't used to having laughs and smiles turned his way, even if they were interspersed with swears and curses.
"Been hangin' out at one 'f th' hotels," Reno answered. "You'd haveta convince th' boss t' let you stay though."

It looked like her offer was useless, however, when Rikku started rambling about 'not making a peep' at Reno (from the looks of it, she was making more than a peep, but who knew what would happen later).
no subject
"Pretty sure he'd notice 'f I'm comin' in with ribbons in my hair. But you c'n try t' persuade him."
He'd help as best he could of course, but even then it wasn't a guarantee that Rufus would be inclined to agree.
"An' you'd better not. Gotten pretty good at spottin' when somethin's been nicked, yo."

Tak narrowed her eyes for a moment, before moving towards the bee-human. This matter begged further investigation. If this Paixao was some part of Earth, bee-humans could throw a serious wrench into her plans for domination. She walked up to the bee-human and the two it seemed to be conversing with and put on her very best charming human-child smile.
"Hi!" she greeted as she came up next to them. "I'm Tak. I'm new here."

She smiled reassuringly at Rikku - Kid rather had a liking for fairies, at least the ones she had met. "No worries, mate. We'll find you a real good place." She looked over at the newcomer. "'Ello, there."
no subject
"You'd have t' find ones that don't clash with th' ribbons," he commented at Kid's remark. First ribbons and now flowers? He'd end looking more than a little odd by the time he managed to get back home at this rate.
But any other musings on that thought were neatly interrupted by the arrival of yet another person. "'Sup?"

Something wasn't right about this girl. Perhaps it was the usage of the word "imbecile," but Kid's instincts were going off. Still, she didn't seem to mean them any harm, and did seem genuinely in need of help, so the thief ignored the feeling for the moment and nodded. "The guards aren't much use around 'ere, but that's not much different from the other places I've been. This place is a mystery to pretty much everyone."
no subject
Besides, that paled in comparison to the fact that he couldn't help but feel that something was a little off about the girl that had just arrived. He couldn't quite pinpoint what it was, but he'd never been in the habit of ignoring his gut feelings.
"Oh, an' it ain't likely you're gonna be leavin' anytime soon," he added as a sort of bizarre afterthought to what the others had mentioned.

Kid looked at Tak again. "There's nothin' leavin' this island, s'far as I can tell," she answered. "From what I've been hearin', lot's of people have been tryin' t'figure this place out for ages with no luck at all." She gave Rikku a questioning look. "What's a gummi ship?"
no subject
"Nah, no ships off th' island, yo. An' as far as I've been able t' figure out Paixao's th' name of th' island and th' city." Not... that he'd actually asked anyone about that. But he hadn't found any reason that had suggested that that wasn't the case so as far as he was concerned, he was right.

She caught hold of the purple journal and brought it round in front of her, looking imploringly up at the humans and bee-human. "Do any of you know what I am meant to do with this? It was rather odd, the man at the gate simply gave it to me..."

Kid didn't know why, but she didn't like this little girl and was certainly not planning on letting her stay. Rikku, perhaps, but only once Kid made sure her stash was safe and that Rikku was trustworthy - and even then only temporarily. Still, the memories of having to fend for herself growing up led Kid to say something. "Y'gotta think things out fer yerself. Otherwise, yer not gonna last long 'ere." Or anywhere else, for that metter.

"'Sa journal. Everyone here has one." Okay, so that hadn't answered the question Tak had actually asked, but like he really cared one way or another what someone decided to do with their journal. For all he cared they could ignore the thing if they wanted.
