What do you do when you're supposed to be dead? [complete]
Character(s): Obito and Kid
Content: Obito returns to the gate looking for the people he met earlier.
Setting: Joutenheim
Time: Night
Warnings: Possible angst
Obito left the cafe feeling a bit empty and lost. He paused in the middle of the street and looked around. It was dark now, but there were still blond people here and there, although not in the numbers they had been during the day. He just stood there for several minutes, watching them walk around him and chewing on his lip. What was he supposed to do now?
After learning that they are about to die, what do people do? He supposed he was meant to go and tell his family that he loved them. But they weren't here. Except for Itachi, but he wasn't responding to Obito's message on his journal and Obito didn't know where to actually look for him. Zetsu had also said that the Itachi here was his age, and the one Obito had seen that morning was only six. If he was supposed to die soon, then would his little cousin even remember him, seven years later? Would anyone remember him? Zetsu had said he died protecting his teammates, and in Obito's reckoning, that was a pretty good way to die, but if it happened so soon, he wouldn't have had time to do anything amazing to be remembered by. Maybe his teammates would remember him... Maybe Rin... and his parents but he wouldn't become a legendary shinobi, like so many of his ancestors. He probably never even used sharingan.
The hot feeling of tears trying to push their way out made Obito screw up his face and bite his lip, fighting them back. There wasn't anyone here to tell that he loved them, or to plead with to remember him. There wasn't anyone to tell that he was scared. He opened his eyes again and pulled his goggles down over them, looking around again through the now slightly orange-tinted world. All the blond hair and blue eyes reminded him of his sensei, which made him bite his lip a bit harder. Then he remembered another blue-eyed blond he'd met earlier. She was pretty nice...
As he jumped up to the nearest roof-top and started leaping his way back towards the gate he'd come in from, Obito acknowledged that it was stupid to think Kid would still be hanging around there. She was probably long gone and had met a lot more new and weird people. Maybe she was in a hotel, it was night after all.
When he got to the gate, the first thing his eyes were drawn to was a creepy lady who seemed to be giving off a heck of a lot of chakra. He hesitated for a minute, considering the strange... person, and then he saw Kid, walking away from her. A little smile of triumph and relief crossed his lips as he jumped off the building he was on and down to the cobbled street.
"Onee-- er, Kid!"

"Onee-- er, Kid!"

Even so, Kid heard the relief in the boy's voice. What had happened?

"And, y'know, I wasn't tired yet or anything and I thought I'd look around and maybe find you again and stuff." He offered her another smile, glad that the tint of his goggles would mask any redness that might have developed around his eyes.

... The boy's tone was strange. Kid wasn't a (damn good, if she did say so herself) thief for nothing, so she crossed her arms and tilted her hips to one side, looking sharply and sisterly at the boy. "What's up, Obito?"

"You know," she said, clapping a hand on Obito's shoulder and squeezing reassuringly, "Th' future's not set in stone." Oh, sure, when Kid had gone back and saved Serge, it had resulted in the timelines splitting, but hey. Serge was still alive, wasn't he? Mission accomplished. "Y'don't have t'give into fate. I've got a friend meself, who was s'posed t'die. He an' I didn't take kindly to that and fought against it." The thief crossed her arms proudly, a smile coming to her face at the memories. "He's still alive, by the way, an' doin' just fine." Never mind that he had Stabbed her, but Obito didn't need to know that.

He shook his head and forced a smile back onto his face. "I'm thinking about this way too much!" he announced. "I mean, it's not like ninja die of old age anyway! That'd just be pathetic!" He pushed his hands into his pockets and started into a casual stroll, doing his best to push back the dark thoughts. "Besides, Zetsu-san said that I died like a hero! So that's awesome!"

She patted Obito on the shoulder, walking alongside him. "S'not bad," she agreed, "but that doesn't mean a have t'give yerself up just yet. Do yer best." Okay, so that line was corny, but it was all she could really come up with, at the moment.

"Eh, not much," she answered, blue eyes fixed ahead of her as they walked. "Just tryin' to survive an' figure out a place to stay that isn't too stuck up." She had been staying somewhere recently, but it was just too snobbish for her tastes. "What about you? Stayin' out o' trouble?"
Because that, of course, was always what Kid did.

"I think there was a list of inns on the journal," he said, pulling his out of his pocket. "There's probably something there that's not too ritzy." He flipped it open and began to poke buttons. "O Pastor doesn't look too bad..."

"I was thinkin' I'd move into Iriela Apartments," Kid replied. "The ones run by gypsies, y'know? Sounds like my kinda place." She eyed Obito critically. "D'you have a place t'stay?" she asked, concerned.

She shrugged. "I dunno what'll happen, but I guess we'll find out." The blonde girl grinned at the thought of it, too many people in this strange, lit-up place. "But if ya need a place t'stay, come'n find me."

Jolting herself out of her remembrance, Kid winked at Obito. "You better take care, mate." With that, she strolled into the night, giving the boy a backwards wave.
