Small Miracles [Open]

Character(s): Vash, Jayne Cobb, anyone else?
Content: There is stunned standing in the rain. And eventually, a donut shop.
Setting: A donut shop between Folio's and Paradiso Hospital
Time: Late Afternoon
Warnings: Does Jayne kiss his momma with that mouth?

They had left the weapons shop just an hour before, headed to whever they were to meet this crazy girl that Jayne had spoke of. The atmosphere between them had been pretty amiable so far, thanks to the earlier bonding over guns. It was the first thing that had really felt normal for Vash in this strange place. If it weren't for the unfamiliar language that he spoke, he wouldn't have been surprised to hear that Jayne came from Gunsmoke. It didn't make any difference either way. A friend was a friend; he just couldn't help but appreciate that the man acted in a way somewhat familiar to him.

It was as they were walking that something caught Vash's eye. Across the street from them was a sign for - could it be? An actual donut shop? To say that it cheered him up was an understatement; Vash was suddenly elated. It felt like he hadn't had a donut in forever, and now there was a whole bakery full of them! Maybe this city wasn't so bad after all. Jayne had walked ahead while Vash stopped and stared, and the outlaw didn't even bother to call the man over, instead hurrying over to the donut shop as if drawn to it.

He was halfway across the street when the first drops of water hit the cobblestones. Vash stopped abruptly when water hit his coat, took a look around and then stared up at the sky. There were dark clouds up there, and he had no idea how that could happen in a dome of all places, but he had little time to think it over as that was when the rain really started coming down.

The torrent of water plastered his hair back in short order, and even began to soak through his coat, but Vash didn't move an inch. "It's raining...?" Even after that statement, he just stood there, grinning up at what passed for a sky.

Supposed to make plants grow? That didn't make any sense. There wasn't any rain on most of the planets he'd been on, but there were plants sometimes. Water just didn't fall from the sky like this. It was weird. Maybe there had been rain on Old Earth, but he'd never seen it before.

The other man said something about going inside, but Jayne was reluctant to do so. He wondered if it would still be "raining" when they came out of the store. Jayne hopes it was. It was cold stuff, and it was getting everything wet, but he had decided the weird sensation was one he liked.

"Yeah all right!" He yelled in reply, following Vash into the little bakery. Once inside he barely took notice of the fact he was now creating a giant puddle, instead his eyes were pulled over to the display cases filled with baked goods. He recognized a few of them vaguely, but the majority remained a mystery to him.

Kicking some water off his shoes, he looked at the goods with some curiosity. "What the hell are those things?" We wondered aloud, gesturing at the case of donuts. Certainly didn't have anything like that on Serenity.
