Long Way From Home [Complete]

Character(s): Vash, anyone else~?
Content: Vash arrives in Paixao and is very confused.
Setting: Niflheim Gate
Time: Late Morning
Warnings: None yet!

He didn't understand what had happened. Vash had been staring out over the endless sand as they were driving, and his eyes had started to droop...

But how did that get him standing here, in front of this big dome-thing, without even an ile of sand in sight?

He turned in a slow circle, taking it all in. The air was much cooler than he was used to, and there was only one sun in the sky, a fact which made him stare until he was temporarily blinded and had to look away. The ground under his feet was dirt, actual dirt, not just the sandy silt that passed for it back home. In front of him was a line of people, and a gate that looked like it was made of jagged crystal, stretching upwards there on the side of that huge dome. Vash couldn't even see where the dome ended; it looked like it went on forever.

The line was moving fast. He heard an impatient noise from behind him and turned to see someone gesturing at him impatiently; Vash gave the guy an apologetic smile and stepped up to the booth. The man inside the booth was dressed like he'd expect to see on a rich man, almost, but when faced with a questioning look he only slid a clipboard and a pen across to Vash. "Your name, sir?"

Blinking, Vash looked down and picked up the pen, scribbling his real name without really thinking about it. "Am I dreaming?" he asked as he passed the clipboard back, picking up the small stack of brochures he was given in return.

"No, sir. You're in Paixao. If you'd go on to the next booth?" the man asked, gesturing towards the gate.

He looked up at the gate as he stepped up to it, up until it hurt his neck, only then taking in the sight of the city that lay before him. Vash had never seen anything like this; the buildings looking strangely elaborate to him, not to mention the sheer oddity that the streets were actually covered, much less that they were covered with cobblestone.

The next booth he had been directed to was right inside the gate, where he somewhat dazedly took a so-called 'electronic journal' from the woman there. Vash wasn't even paying attention to the thing as he stepped away from the booth, rather distracted by staring at the buildings and the people that passed by.

He was expecting to wake up any moment now.

Perhaps if this was a dream, Allen would wake up once more in China, in a bed in the Black Order's Asian Branch Headquarters. Then he would be weak and pathetic and almost dead, wrapped in bandages and without his Innocence's form once again. Linali and Rabi and the others... they would be in Japan. They would be looking for Master Cross and they might find him, and they might find the Millenium Earl. They might defeat him, they might not. They weren't doing very well when he had come across them, had they?

"This is stupid," he muttered, situated on a bench awkwardly. He was crouched on it, heels tucked up underneath him and black journal etched in white and silver rested atop it. He hated being here, he didn't want to be. Linali, Rabi... Crowley, Miranda... even Kanda. He was worried about everyone, and now he was in Paixao.

But there was hope. Linali... she... she seemed to be here.

If it was a dream, he wanted to wake up now instead of be torn out of it to where he expected to wake up again. It would be true torture, he felt. Though it would of saved him the confusion of glancing around at the gate and its people.

"I'll tell you one thing... This place sure seems a lot friendlier when there aren't strange gray alien monsters running rampant and murdering everyone in their way..."

Vala was a little impressed. Her second trip to Niflheim gate was a complete change from the first time she had been in the area. There was actually a huge line of people waiting to get in this time, and the streets were once again busy. It was like the attacks had never happened. Granted, it had been a little while, but it was still amazing just how fast everything could go back to normal.

She still didn't see any of her team members though, which was the real reason she'd wanted to return to the gate. She had hoped that some of the others might show up if she waited long enough, either as a result of the same force that had brought her there or, even better, as an attempt to rescue her. There were supposedly three other gates she could have checked, of course, but it seemed most logical to start at the one that she had come through herself. As it was, though, she hadn't seen anyone she knew, besides her little furry companion. She didn't think that anyone Sword knew was around either, judging by the fact that there were no other remarkably tiny people coming through the gates at the moment. "Well... I don't see any familiar faces," she admitted. "It was worth a shot, at least."

Maybe coming back to the gate wouldn't be a total waste, though. They could always try to pry some information out of someone, and there were currently a lot of someones around to choose from...

[identity profile] floofy-chivalry.livejournal.com 2007-01-07 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
"It does." Sword agreed, equally impressed. "They're very quick to rebuild." He was content enough to stand and wait with Vala, busy little snuffling noises coming from the helmet every so often; it wasn't that he was crying, or even close to it, nor was he having an allergy attack--honestly, what was there to be allergic to here, when everything was fake? Flopsem that he was, he was relying on smell as well, just on the off-chance that he didn't spot his friends if they were here; they would smell different enough so that he'd know they had passed, even if they were gone by the time he sniffed them out.

"Neither do I." Sword could only shake his head and spread his hands, crisp english accent only seeming to magnify his exasperation. He was tired of standing around looking for people that felt like they might never come, and tired of nearly falling over whenever he tried to look up at Vala to talk to her, for all their height difference. At least the latter could be remedied, somewhat, now that he looked around....

Spotting a small empty place at the edge of Allen's bench, Sword took off in a quick jog, covering the short distance within moments and building up enough momentum to grab the edge and haul himself up. Better! It wasn't perfect, and he'd still have to look up, but at least not as far.... it really was an effort to do anything around here, wasn't it? Everything was so ridiculously big.... How was he ever supposed to find his friends in a place like this?

[identity profile] cursedapostle.livejournal.com 2007-01-08 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Allen had been so deep rooted in his brief conversation with Linali that he had not noticed Vash come and plop himself down on an unoccupied spot on his bench. He had refused to move from that spot, because he would of gotten himself so lost otherwise. Nearly jumping at the greeting, he turned blue eyes over towards him before blinking them repeatedly. "Ah, hi." There was a flash of a smile, partially forced but he was stressed and that would be hard to hold against him. "You..." he gave him a look-over, tilted his white-haired head, and looked back up to his face. "Aren't from here, are you?"

The red jacket wasn't something he expected on one of these ... Paixao people. Nor was the happy, all of them seemed relatively flat as it was. The one's he'd seen, anyways.

What the hell just jumped up next to him, though?

Allen jumped, again, when Sword jumped atop another vacant spot of his bench. He shifted and gave the armored ... thing some room, now sitting on the top of the bench with his feet on the seat of it still. Well this was interesting. His eye wasn't reacting, so he wasn't concerned, but still wanted to know what in the world had just jumped up next to him and the blonde.

[identity profile] notaconvert.livejournal.com 2007-01-08 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Vala watched with amusement as Sword found himself a seat next to two very confused-looking people. They probably hadn't ever seen any sort of creature so different from themselves. She chuckled softly, then flashed a smile and sauntered up alongside the trio. "Oh, don't worry, he doesn't bite or anything," she assured Vash and Allen cheerfully. "He's quite chivalrous as a matter of fact."

She eyed the two thoughtfully for a moment, noting their rather... interesting attire. They definitely didn't match the majority of the Paixaoans she had seen thus far. That in itself was reassuring. She had found the actual residents of the city to be a little bit distant in her few dealings with them... She had a feeling that people from outside the city would be much more forthcoming with information, assuming there was any useful information to be had. If not, they'd at least be better company.

"I'm Vala," she offered pleasantly. "And my little friend here is Sir Sword Knight. Did you just arrive here, or have you been here a while?"

[identity profile] floofy-chivalry.livejournal.com 2007-01-08 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Sword gave the younger-looking one a curious glance as the boy jumped again--nervous sort, wasn't he?--at his sudden appearance, sniffing a little at both he and the blond with the bright coat. One of them smelled a little odd, though he couldn't put his finger on which one.... if he hadn't specifically been looking for clues about them, he wasn't sure he would have noticed at all. It didn't smell bad though, so whatever....

Oh, so now the too-tall with the coat was staring at him, too? This one was blond, but definitely didn't look like the other Paixaoans.... He was even taller than most he'd seen, too.... he was definitely being pegged a way-too-tall, at this point. Sword stood silent and still, standing at his full one foot height and trying to look as impressive as possible--somehow, he doubted it was working, considering the way-too-tall was pinching his neck, presumably to make sure he wasn't dreaming. Yes, he did have a sword, even if it was only about the size of a butcher knife. Yes, he did know how to use it. Quite well, too. Not that he intended to right now, though.

"Bite? As if I'd need to!" Sword sounded faintly indignant at the thought. Chivalrous, though, that was better. He was a knight, after all. With that in mind, Sword offered the pair a smart salute as Vala introduced him, wishing there were something like.... oh, a fountain, maybe, nearby. One big enough to comfortably stand on and get him nearer to these people's heads. Being elbow height to them while they were sitting was better than being shin-height while they were standing, but still, it was annoying....

[identity profile] cursedapostle.livejournal.com 2007-01-13 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not that I think he'd bite me," Allen provided, glancing up to the woman who introduced the two of them, then looking back to Sword. "I'm just a little out of it, it's surprising to have someone jump up next to you randomly." While he might not have known who this small, armored creature was nor his feelings on being short, he wasn't about to call him 'something' as opposed to 'someone.' Closing his journal and letting it rest on his lap, he leaned down so that his chest was closer to his knees, and thus closer to the small knight.

"My name's Allen Walker. Nice to meet you all," he turned his head to look curiously over towards the blonde, before offering an actual smile. "A little, all of the people here I've met so far aren't very friendly, or ... colorful." The red still told him off that he couldn't of been from here. No one seemed to be bright enough for it, considering the whole ... clones concept.

After the initial shock of being transported to here, Locke had found this place to be somewhat interesting indeed. The architecture of this place wasn't much like he was used to seeing; it had to have been some rather out-of-the-way place that he'd been taken to, especially if things were still in extremely good condition. Unfortunately, the various townsfolk had been less than useful in answering any questions he'd had. He'd asked several of the folk about where he was; however, they'd either hadn't known, or wouldn't tell him, since they had refused to give him an answer of any sort.

Which makes no sense, he thought. Surely there can't be that many people around here who can't give a straight answer about this place? Especially if they live here? Something's definitely odd about that...

A dash of red in the corner of his eye caught his attention...quite a bit of red, actually, which he saw belonged to the clothes of some young man. After tearing his gaze away from the red, Locke noticed that there was also another young man nearby, along with an older woman and what appeared to be a sort of armored something.

He found himself walking towards them, wondering if his luck would be better this time around. Even if it wasn't, it wouldn't hurt to ask again. He was sure to find someone who knew things eventually if he kept asking. "Excuse me," he called out to them. "My apologies if I happen to be interrupting anything, but I happen to be in need of some information..."

[identity profile] notaconvert.livejournal.com 2007-01-15 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Vala couldn't help but agree with Allen's comment about the native Paixaoans. "Yes, the locals do seem to be rather bland, don't they? And they don't have much in the way of personality, either... Not sure how this particular sort of culture could have come about..." She might have guessed it had something to do with a strict religion, except the people didn't strike her as being the least bit religious. "They haven't been especially unfriendly, though... to me, anyway." She wasn't sure what the other's experiences with the people were, but she hadn't had any real troubles, besides the natives' complete lack of useful information.

As the newcomer appeared, a wry smile spread over Vala's face. "Information, huh? There seems to be precious little of that going around lately, but I'll answer any questions that I can."

[identity profile] floofy-chivalry.livejournal.com 2007-01-15 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"So out of it I didn't think you'd notice." Sword observed dryly. At least Allen was treating him like a person and didn't assume he'd snap just because he was little and furry.... come to think of it, he doubted Allen knew he was furry yet. Soma had seemed to think of him somewhere between an animal and a monster, at first. Nice that he was trying to lessen the height gap, though.... "They didn't seem too bad to me. Not too colorful, but polite enough."

Sword grinned under his helmet at the returned salute the way-too-tall--Vash, he guessed he should call him now--had given him. Not very disciplined, but it was the thought that counted, right? "I thought I died and got here, but according to Vala, that isn't the case...." He had to shrug at the culture comment, agreeing with her; he just couldn't fathom how people lived without strong emotions.

The information.... well, he was pretty sure they all shared that sentiment, including the too-tall in the strange hat. "We're probably not much better off than you, but two heads are better than one--fire away."

[identity profile] cursedapostle.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"I haven't encountered many of the locals just yet," Allen let his arms lightly wrap about the underside of his legs as he leaned over, chest against his journal and journal settled in his lap. "Only the one at the gate, and a few outside of it... none have been helpful." He rolled a shoulder in a shrug, giving a smile as he listened to them speak after giving his own input. He gave Sword a sheepish look concerning his 'out of it' comment, rubbing at the back of his white hair before peeking up towards the rest of them.

"I know I didn't die... I was... pulled into the ground, though..." It was an odd thought, but this place certainly wasn't something of the Millenium Earl's design. Couldn't be, it just... wasn't his style, and this was starting to bother him considerably now. Blue eyes trailed to the newcomer, and he blinked at the odd hat that sat on his head as well. Information Allen could not provide, although group efforts were always nice.

[identity profile] returnerlocke.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, looks like I might not have much more luck than I thought, Locke thought with a small sigh, running his fingers through the part of his hair that wasn't covered by his bandana. Still, it's not like I'll be asking for the most difficult things in the world here.

"Even so, if any of you could help in any way I'd still be grateful," he said. "It's just a handful of quick questions, since no one else I've met has bothered to give me a decent answer. Or any answer at all, really. First of all...do any of you know what's the name of this place?" His gaze went up to the domed ceiling for a moment. "And two...this city seems to be in awfully good condition. Every other place I've been to recently was destroyed in some way...so I wonder why this one isn't..."

The second question wasn't so much more a question as it was Locke wondering aloud to himself.

[identity profile] notaconvert.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Paixao, yes," Vala agreed with Vash, pronouncing it far more easily. She'd been to places with stranger names, so it didn't really faze her like it seemed to do with some people. "And since you asked about the state of the place, this probably isn't the same world you originally came from, so the local scenery is going to be a whole lot different. I take it you must come from somewhere that's suffered a lot of war recently?" That was usually the major cause of ruined cities...

[identity profile] floofy-chivalry.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sword nodded in sympathy. "The most help I've gotten from one is when I went to eat before, with a few other people I'd met--they explained that they don't take paper money, just the metal sort." Allen really had been out of it at the beginning.... it wasn't like he'd been intending to harass the guy, either, just get some height on his bench. Could he be blamed for thinking he might be ignored? "Pulled into the ground?"

"Yes." He agreed with the others, glancing off at the nearby gates of silver ice. "More specifically, you're at the Niflheim Gate. And if you'd come a little earlier, you'd have seen the city in some disrepair from those white monsters that were attacking.... they seem to have disappeared though, or something, and the natives repaired the damages very quickly."

[identity profile] cursedapostle.livejournal.com 2007-01-23 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, pulled into the ground... well, Linali was at first, and I went after her..." Allen rubbed at the back of his head sheepishly, before shrugging. He couldn't blame Sword for wanting a higher perch, really. In all honesty, he might not have noticed him if he didn't. Then he'd feel guilty. "I'm sure others followed..."

His eyes trailed up to the gate of ice that he had come through, shifting to sit up a little and get a better look at them. However, Sword's words on monsters caused his hackles to metaphorically rise and he snapped his gaze back towards him. "Monsters?" If they were gone now, was that a good thing? Had Linali encountered them? Any of the others? This was not ideal in the slightest bit.

[identity profile] returnerlocke.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Locke's mind did a double-take at what Vala had mentioned. Could it even be possible for him to have been transported to a whole other world...? No, it couldn't be possible, he thought; he refused to believe that. If the Phoenix had managed to take him away from his world, then how in the world would he get back...and how would he ever get back to Rachel...

His eyes showed a tinge of sadness for a moment at that thought. No, there had to be a way back to her...somehow. "You might say that things have been through war where I've been," he said with a wry smile. "A long, painful war caused by the greed of a madman.

"Oh, by the way." He changed tone quickly, as if suddenly remembering something. "The name's Locke. Nice to meet you, and thanks a lot for helping."

His hand went down to the pouch that hung at his belt, as he felt for the lump that was the magicite in there. He was wondering about something, though he wasn't sure if it would even work at all...

[identity profile] notaconvert.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Madmen..." Vala grimaced at Locke's explanation. "Seems like there's always someone trying to control everything, no matter where you go." She wondered if Locke's madman was as bad as some of the ego-driven self-made gods that she'd run into time and time again. She didn't know why it was that the nastiest people always got their hands on the greatest power. Why couldn't they have benevolent all-powerful beings? Well, perhaps the Ancients counted, except they weren't really benevolent, just indifferent. Vala didn't think that simply ignoring the problems of "lesser beings" was quite the same as protecting them from other more advanced beings that wished them harm.

She wondered if the creatures from earlier had also been part of some madman's schemes to control the world they were currently in at the moment. It really wouldn't have surprised her, especially given the sudden appearance and disappearance of the monsters.

"Yes, they just up and vanished," she confirmed, although she amended her response a moment later, "There were ~some~ people who fought them, of course, so maybe they did just end up retreating. But there were a whole lot of them, and they seemed pretty good at killing people, so I don't see why they would have left as quickly as they did. Nobody seems to have seen where they went, either. They just disappeared."

[identity profile] floofy-chivalry.livejournal.com 2007-01-30 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Pulled into the ground.... wow. Sword had to feel sympathetic; it didn't sound like Allen had fared much better than he had, really. After all, he'd come here after being engulfed in flames. And Locke had been dealing with war? That was horrible too. Terrible, horrible, unforgivable.... he hated war with a passion. It was what had torn his home planet apart, after all, destroyed his family, ripped him and Blade from the comfortable lives they had led.... but then, it had also led to Lord Meta Knight. And Kirby, and Tiff and Tuff, and.... well, he was grateful for his friends, even if the means that had gotten him to meet them were less than ideal. King Dedede wasn't quite a madman, though he did want to control things--but it was Nightmare that was the real madman. He was the one trying to dominate the universe, he was the one who had decimated the ranks of the Galaxy Army and nearly wiped out all the Star Warriors.....

"Monsters." Sword confirmed, mildly taken aback by the looks Bash and Allen had given him--they almost looked as if they were mad at HIM for a second there.... and that was kind of scary. They were both big, and probably too experienced in fighting for him to take on both at once. What wouldn't he give to be back with his friends, or at least have them with him? "It was. I'm pretty sure they weren't driven off; they seemed to have pretty free run of the city, for the most part; not many people were keen on fighting them, and none of the natives. I tried to fight some, but my sword wouldn't do any appreciable damage." He sounded understandably put out at that admission, and decided to not mention the fact that he'd been fleeing for his life just before he'd met Vala.

"At any rate, I'm glad they're gone.... being here is trouble enough, without ending up being attacked too. It's safe to walk around now, from what I can see."

[identity profile] cursedapostle.livejournal.com 2007-01-31 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Allen listened, though shifted to sit up again away from Sword after a moment. The thought of war again... of being pulled into the ground when going after Linali. She was here, though! She was safe and all right and alive. This made him think a moment, and he opened up his journal once again to see if there were other responses to his apparent post in the message board. As he moved to scroll through them, his eyes widened a little and he had to keep himself from getting overly excited. Miranda! And what seemed to be Rabi as well!

"There's a war, from where I came from... I have to get back to it, and make sure that the one who started it can't cause anyone anymore pain..." he shut his journal after quick responses, and hopped up to balance with quite a bit of expertise on the back of the bench. Somehow he fit his journal into one of the pouches on his uniform, and gave them a smile. "And some of my companions are here, it seems. Thank you for your information, and if any you ever need any help, well..."

There was still a smile as he hopped off the back of the bench, as to not stomp on Sword or to end up stumbling into Vala or Locke. "Just ask for Allen on these, and I'll see what I can do." He tapped where he'd put his journal, and then went for making a mad dash into the inner area of Niflheim once more to find his closest Exorcist friend.

[identity profile] returnerlocke.livejournal.com 2007-02-04 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Locke raised an eyebrow at the two men who had just departed. "Goodbye, then!" he called to Vash at least, for Allen was already gone. "Ah, people rushing around," he said to nobody in particular. "Typical. Oh, how I've missed seeing any sort of proper city."

He turned to Sword and Vala, and gave them a grin. "I'm almost tempted to follow their example, but with a place such as this the best thing to do is to take it nice and easy to keep yourself from getting lost." He imagined that one could get lost rather easily in a city like this. "Either of you mind if I stick around for a little while longer, then?"

[identity profile] notaconvert.livejournal.com 2007-02-05 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Vala watched Allen and Vash head off with a slightly surprised expression. She hadn't quite expected them to both go running off so quickly... but she supposed they probably had things to do and their own problems to worry about. She certainly had enough of her own.

At Locke's request, Vala simply shrugged. "It's fine with me..." Not like she really minded having someone else around to talk to or bounce ideas off of. While she still intended to find some way out of the city and back to Earth, Vala wasn't about to guess how long it might take to actually do that. It could be a while, considering the acute lack of progress that she was suffering from. "Maybe you can help us find out how we got here and whether or not there's a way for us to get home again. It seems to be the biggest mystery of this whole city, and so far, we haven't heard of anyone else figuring it out."

[identity profile] floofy-chivalry.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Sword made a soft sympathetic noise as he heard Allen's intentions, lifting a hand to salute; he could definitely, definitely respect what a soldier like him wanted to do. It was only just and right, to keep people from further pain, even if it did mean sacrificing your own happiness for a while. "Good luck and good dreaming."

"It's a good idea, even if they do seem to have disappeared." Sword agreed with Vash entirely on that one. "Have a nice meal, don't hesitate to search me out if I can do anything for you." He waved to Vash as the second man left, quite suddenly discovering that he had the bench all to himself.

"Proper city? Where have you been, then?" He blinked under his helmet at Locke, baffled, but nodded his agreement. "I got lost and separated from the people I first met coming here.... One of them, at least, was good at fending off those strange white creatures. But I have no complaints; safety in numbers is always good, after all."

He was about to comment on the mystery when he felt something cold and wet splat his nose through the visor, and jumped, making a startled little yip and shaking his head before looking up. More snow started pouring through the gap, shocking in it's suddenness and ferocity; within seconds, he found himself staring a blizzard in the face, shivering violently as more snow slipped into his armor and chilled the metal uncomfortably, not to mention getting him wet from the snow melting against him....

No, Sword was most definitely not a happy cute fuzzy thing.

"How is it snowing inside a dome?!" The Flopsem didn't hesitate to voice his disapproval, bur immediately pulled off his helmet and shook his ears out to get rid of some of the stiffness, wasting no time in crawling out of the rest of his armor as well so he could strap it to his back to carry. Modesty be damned--Vala had already seen his face, and he really didn't want the stuff to freeze onto him. It took forever to get off when that happened, and it hurt....
