Long Way From Home [Complete]
Character(s): Vash, anyone else~?
Content: Vash arrives in Paixao and is very confused.
Setting: Niflheim Gate
Time: Late Morning
Warnings: None yet!
He didn't understand what had happened. Vash had been staring out over the endless sand as they were driving, and his eyes had started to droop...
But how did that get him standing here, in front of this big dome-thing, without even an ile of sand in sight?
He turned in a slow circle, taking it all in. The air was much cooler than he was used to, and there was only one sun in the sky, a fact which made him stare until he was temporarily blinded and had to look away. The ground under his feet was dirt, actual dirt, not just the sandy silt that passed for it back home. In front of him was a line of people, and a gate that looked like it was made of jagged crystal, stretching upwards there on the side of that huge dome. Vash couldn't even see where the dome ended; it looked like it went on forever.
The line was moving fast. He heard an impatient noise from behind him and turned to see someone gesturing at him impatiently; Vash gave the guy an apologetic smile and stepped up to the booth. The man inside the booth was dressed like he'd expect to see on a rich man, almost, but when faced with a questioning look he only slid a clipboard and a pen across to Vash. "Your name, sir?"
Blinking, Vash looked down and picked up the pen, scribbling his real name without really thinking about it. "Am I dreaming?" he asked as he passed the clipboard back, picking up the small stack of brochures he was given in return.
"No, sir. You're in Paixao. If you'd go on to the next booth?" the man asked, gesturing towards the gate.
He looked up at the gate as he stepped up to it, up until it hurt his neck, only then taking in the sight of the city that lay before him. Vash had never seen anything like this; the buildings looking strangely elaborate to him, not to mention the sheer oddity that the streets were actually covered, much less that they were covered with cobblestone.
The next booth he had been directed to was right inside the gate, where he somewhat dazedly took a so-called 'electronic journal' from the woman there. Vash wasn't even paying attention to the thing as he stepped away from the booth, rather distracted by staring at the buildings and the people that passed by.
He was expecting to wake up any moment now.

He was expecting to wake up any moment now.

"This is stupid," he muttered, situated on a bench awkwardly. He was crouched on it, heels tucked up underneath him and black journal etched in white and silver rested atop it. He hated being here, he didn't want to be. Linali, Rabi... Crowley, Miranda... even Kanda. He was worried about everyone, and now he was in Paixao.
But there was hope. Linali... she... she seemed to be here.
If it was a dream, he wanted to wake up now instead of be torn out of it to where he expected to wake up again. It would be true torture, he felt. Though it would of saved him the confusion of glancing around at the gate and its people.

The only problem with that was, he would soon be forced to consider exactly how he might've gotten here. Just the implications that loomed on the edge of his thoughts were somewhat disturbing. He didn't want to think of it right now; right now he needed to get his bearings, and get a better idea of exactly where he was.
He had wandered fairly close to a bench now, spotting the strangely-dressed boy sitting on it. That sort of outfit seemed a lot different than the typical style of all the other people passing by. Since the other spot on the bench wasn't taken, well, Vash went over and took a seat, taking a brief glance down at the papers and the journal he had been given before offering the boy a smile. "Hello!"

Vala was a little impressed. Her second trip to Niflheim gate was a complete change from the first time she had been in the area. There was actually a huge line of people waiting to get in this time, and the streets were once again busy. It was like the attacks had never happened. Granted, it had been a little while, but it was still amazing just how fast everything could go back to normal.
She still didn't see any of her team members though, which was the real reason she'd wanted to return to the gate. She had hoped that some of the others might show up if she waited long enough, either as a result of the same force that had brought her there or, even better, as an attempt to rescue her. There were supposedly three other gates she could have checked, of course, but it seemed most logical to start at the one that she had come through herself. As it was, though, she hadn't seen anyone she knew, besides her little furry companion. She didn't think that anyone Sword knew was around either, judging by the fact that there were no other remarkably tiny people coming through the gates at the moment. "Well... I don't see any familiar faces," she admitted. "It was worth a shot, at least."
Maybe coming back to the gate wouldn't be a total waste, though. They could always try to pry some information out of someone, and there were currently a lot of someones around to choose from...

"Neither do I." Sword could only shake his head and spread his hands, crisp english accent only seeming to magnify his exasperation. He was tired of standing around looking for people that felt like they might never come, and tired of nearly falling over whenever he tried to look up at Vala to talk to her, for all their height difference. At least the latter could be remedied, somewhat, now that he looked around....
Spotting a small empty place at the edge of Allen's bench, Sword took off in a quick jog, covering the short distance within moments and building up enough momentum to grab the edge and haul himself up. Better! It wasn't perfect, and he'd still have to look up, but at least not as far.... it really was an effort to do anything around here, wasn't it? Everything was so ridiculously big.... How was he ever supposed to find his friends in a place like this?

The red jacket wasn't something he expected on one of these ... Paixao people. Nor was the happy, all of them seemed relatively flat as it was. The one's he'd seen, anyways.
What the hell just jumped up next to him, though?
Allen jumped, again, when Sword jumped atop another vacant spot of his bench. He shifted and gave the armored ... thing some room, now sitting on the top of the bench with his feet on the seat of it still. Well this was interesting. His eye wasn't reacting, so he wasn't concerned, but still wanted to know what in the world had just jumped up next to him and the blonde.

Settling back in his seat, he stared forward bemusedly. Then, he raised his right arm and very deliberately pinched the side of his neck. Maybe Vash had pinched himself a little too hard, because it made him wince. "Okay, I'm awake," he mumbled to himself, chancing another glance at the armored-thing. It was still there. And was that a tiny sword? It looked like it.
He would've thought that he was imagining thing, if the boy hadn't reacted to it as well. Still, knowing that he wasn't asleep and that he wasn't going crazy didn't leave very many explanations for that.

She eyed the two thoughtfully for a moment, noting their rather... interesting attire. They definitely didn't match the majority of the Paixaoans she had seen thus far. That in itself was reassuring. She had found the actual residents of the city to be a little bit distant in her few dealings with them... She had a feeling that people from outside the city would be much more forthcoming with information, assuming there was any useful information to be had. If not, they'd at least be better company.
"I'm Vala," she offered pleasantly. "And my little friend here is Sir Sword Knight. Did you just arrive here, or have you been here a while?"

Oh, so now the too-tall with the coat was staring at him, too? This one was blond, but definitely didn't look like the other Paixaoans.... He was even taller than most he'd seen, too.... he was definitely being pegged a way-too-tall, at this point. Sword stood silent and still, standing at his full one foot height and trying to look as impressive as possible--somehow, he doubted it was working, considering the way-too-tall was pinching his neck, presumably to make sure he wasn't dreaming. Yes, he did have a sword, even if it was only about the size of a butcher knife. Yes, he did know how to use it. Quite well, too. Not that he intended to right now, though.
"Bite? As if I'd need to!" Sword sounded faintly indignant at the thought. Chivalrous, though, that was better. He was a knight, after all. With that in mind, Sword offered the pair a smart salute as Vala introduced him, wishing there were something like.... oh, a fountain, maybe, nearby. One big enough to comfortably stand on and get him nearer to these people's heads. Being elbow height to them while they were sitting was better than being shin-height while they were standing, but still, it was annoying....
no subject
"My name's Allen Walker. Nice to meet you all," he turned his head to look curiously over towards the blonde, before offering an actual smile. "A little, all of the people here I've met so far aren't very friendly, or ... colorful." The red still told him off that he couldn't of been from here. No one seemed to be bright enough for it, considering the whole ... clones concept.
no subject
Which makes no sense, he thought. Surely there can't be that many people around here who can't give a straight answer about this place? Especially if they live here? Something's definitely odd about that...
A dash of red in the corner of his eye caught his attention...quite a bit of red, actually, which he saw belonged to the clothes of some young man. After tearing his gaze away from the red, Locke noticed that there was also another young man nearby, along with an older woman and what appeared to be a sort of armored something.
He found himself walking towards them, wondering if his luck would be better this time around. Even if it wasn't, it wouldn't hurt to ask again. He was sure to find someone who knew things eventually if he kept asking. "Excuse me," he called out to them. "My apologies if I happen to be interrupting anything, but I happen to be in need of some information..."
no subject
"I'm Vash! And, ah... I just arrived here. Somehow. I'm really not quite sure how it happened." He rubbed at the back of his neck, smiling apologetically. "It's too bad, really," Vash said, looking to Allen. "I was at least hoping for friendly locals." He always hoped for friendly locals, wherever he went, but more often than not that wasn't the case. Or else something would happen to make it not be the case. It was sort of annoying.
Spotting the other man walking up, Vash turned to look at him, blinking at the sight. Here was someone else that was dressed unlike most of the people he had seen during his short time here. He didn't think he'd ever seen headgear that was quite that flashy.
no subject
As the newcomer appeared, a wry smile spread over Vala's face. "Information, huh? There seems to be precious little of that going around lately, but I'll answer any questions that I can."
no subject
Sword grinned under his helmet at the returned salute the way-too-tall--Vash, he guessed he should call him now--had given him. Not very disciplined, but it was the thought that counted, right? "I thought I died and got here, but according to Vala, that isn't the case...." He had to shrug at the culture comment, agreeing with her; he just couldn't fathom how people lived without strong emotions.
The information.... well, he was pretty sure they all shared that sentiment, including the too-tall in the strange hat. "We're probably not much better off than you, but two heads are better than one--fire away."
no subject
"I know I didn't die... I was... pulled into the ground, though..." It was an odd thought, but this place certainly wasn't something of the Millenium Earl's design. Couldn't be, it just... wasn't his style, and this was starting to bother him considerably now. Blue eyes trailed to the newcomer, and he blinked at the odd hat that sat on his head as well. Information Allen could not provide, although group efforts were always nice.
no subject
"Even so, if any of you could help in any way I'd still be grateful," he said. "It's just a handful of quick questions, since no one else I've met has bothered to give me a decent answer. Or any answer at all, really. First of all...do any of you know what's the name of this place?" His gaze went up to the domed ceiling for a moment. "And two...this city seems to be in awfully good condition. Every other place I've been to recently was destroyed in some way...so I wonder why this one isn't..."
The second question wasn't so much more a question as it was Locke wondering aloud to himself.

Besides, that one guy had asked some questions. Vash looked over to him, and scratched at the side of his head, "The guy at the gate said it's called.. Pai? Pai-xao?" He wasn't doing a very good job of pronouncing it, the word being too foreign for him. "I can't say I know anything about destroyed cities." Well. Not the kind that he was willing to talk to some stranger about.

"Yes." He agreed with the others, glancing off at the nearby gates of silver ice. "More specifically, you're at the Niflheim Gate. And if you'd come a little earlier, you'd have seen the city in some disrepair from those white monsters that were attacking.... they seem to have disappeared though, or something, and the natives repaired the damages very quickly."
no subject
His eyes trailed up to the gate of ice that he had come through, shifting to sit up a little and get a better look at them. However, Sword's words on monsters caused his hackles to metaphorically rise and he snapped his gaze back towards him. "Monsters?" If they were gone now, was that a good thing? Had Linali encountered them? Any of the others? This was not ideal in the slightest bit.
no subject
His eyes showed a tinge of sadness for a moment at that thought. No, there had to be a way back to her...somehow. "You might say that things have been through war where I've been," he said with a wry smile. "A long, painful war caused by the greed of a madman.
"Oh, by the way." He changed tone quickly, as if suddenly remembering something. "The name's Locke. Nice to meet you, and thanks a lot for helping."
His hand went down to the pouch that hung at his belt, as he felt for the lump that was the magicite in there. He was wondering about something, though he wasn't sure if it would even work at all...
no subject
Well, it couldn't be nearly as bad as some of the towns on Gunsmoke.
He gave a distracted nod to Locke at hearing his introduction, but didn't fail to offer him a smile. It sure seemed like there were a lot of them in this strange situation, didn't it?
no subject
She wondered if the creatures from earlier had also been part of some madman's schemes to control the world they were currently in at the moment. It really wouldn't have surprised her, especially given the sudden appearance and disappearance of the monsters.
"Yes, they just up and vanished," she confirmed, although she amended her response a moment later, "There were ~some~ people who fought them, of course, so maybe they did just end up retreating. But there were a whole lot of them, and they seemed pretty good at killing people, so I don't see why they would have left as quickly as they did. Nobody seems to have seen where they went, either. They just disappeared."
no subject
"Monsters." Sword confirmed, mildly taken aback by the looks Bash and Allen had given him--they almost looked as if they were mad at HIM for a second there.... and that was kind of scary. They were both big, and probably too experienced in fighting for him to take on both at once. What wouldn't he give to be back with his friends, or at least have them with him? "It was. I'm pretty sure they weren't driven off; they seemed to have pretty free run of the city, for the most part; not many people were keen on fighting them, and none of the natives. I tried to fight some, but my sword wouldn't do any appreciable damage." He sounded understandably put out at that admission, and decided to not mention the fact that he'd been fleeing for his life just before he'd met Vala.
"At any rate, I'm glad they're gone.... being here is trouble enough, without ending up being attacked too. It's safe to walk around now, from what I can see."
no subject
"There's a war, from where I came from... I have to get back to it, and make sure that the one who started it can't cause anyone anymore pain..." he shut his journal after quick responses, and hopped up to balance with quite a bit of expertise on the back of the bench. Somehow he fit his journal into one of the pouches on his uniform, and gave them a smile. "And some of my companions are here, it seems. Thank you for your information, and if any you ever need any help, well..."
There was still a smile as he hopped off the back of the bench, as to not stomp on Sword or to end up stumbling into Vala or Locke. "Just ask for Allen on these, and I'll see what I can do." He tapped where he'd put his journal, and then went for making a mad dash into the inner area of Niflheim once more to find his closest Exorcist friend.
no subject
"I think I'll still be keeping an eye out here. I can't say I like the idea of those weird things." Especially not if they had been killing people and no one could do anything about it! However, Vash's darker thoughts didn't at all reflect on his still-pleasant expression, except for a slight tightnes around his smile.
Then, Vash's stomach growled, embarrassingly loud. "...Ah, I haven't eaten yet today!" At least, not anything of substance; rations couldn't at all count as 'eating'. But now, he was in a city, and cities meant restaurants and warm food! Just the thought of it was cheering him up. "I should really go find somewhere to eat. It was nice meeting you all," Vash said, giving the other three a bright smile before stepping back and walking towards a cluster of buildings. There had to be a good place somewhere close by...
no subject
He turned to Sword and Vala, and gave them a grin. "I'm almost tempted to follow their example, but with a place such as this the best thing to do is to take it nice and easy to keep yourself from getting lost." He imagined that one could get lost rather easily in a city like this. "Either of you mind if I stick around for a little while longer, then?"
no subject
At Locke's request, Vala simply shrugged. "It's fine with me..." Not like she really minded having someone else around to talk to or bounce ideas off of. While she still intended to find some way out of the city and back to Earth, Vala wasn't about to guess how long it might take to actually do that. It could be a while, considering the acute lack of progress that she was suffering from. "Maybe you can help us find out how we got here and whether or not there's a way for us to get home again. It seems to be the biggest mystery of this whole city, and so far, we haven't heard of anyone else figuring it out."
no subject
"It's a good idea, even if they do seem to have disappeared." Sword agreed with Vash entirely on that one. "Have a nice meal, don't hesitate to search me out if I can do anything for you." He waved to Vash as the second man left, quite suddenly discovering that he had the bench all to himself.
"Proper city? Where have you been, then?" He blinked under his helmet at Locke, baffled, but nodded his agreement. "I got lost and separated from the people I first met coming here.... One of them, at least, was good at fending off those strange white creatures. But I have no complaints; safety in numbers is always good, after all."
He was about to comment on the mystery when he felt something cold and wet splat his nose through the visor, and jumped, making a startled little yip and shaking his head before looking up. More snow started pouring through the gap, shocking in it's suddenness and ferocity; within seconds, he found himself staring a blizzard in the face, shivering violently as more snow slipped into his armor and chilled the metal uncomfortably, not to mention getting him wet from the snow melting against him....
No, Sword was most definitely not a happy cute fuzzy thing.
"How is it snowing inside a dome?!" The Flopsem didn't hesitate to voice his disapproval, bur immediately pulled off his helmet and shook his ears out to get rid of some of the stiffness, wasting no time in crawling out of the rest of his armor as well so he could strap it to his back to carry. Modesty be damned--Vala had already seen his face, and he really didn't want the stuff to freeze onto him. It took forever to get off when that happened, and it hurt....
