Vanaheim and the Pie Show [Completed]

Character(s): Dante
Content: Dante Sparda arrives in Paixao (or is that Pie Show?) and encounters rudeness.
Setting: Both sides of Vanaheim Gate
Time: Wednesday night
Warnings: Some language

The stars were different here. The haze that always covered them in the city wasn’t present in the sky. They could be seen clearly far above, shining away brilliantly.

‘Why am I staring at stars? Did I really expect to go through a portal and come out the other side, still in the city?’

Dante, lying flat on his back, quickly had enough of stargazing. He quickly got up, checking to make sure he still had his weapons. Yes, there they were. Rebellion was somehow on his back, though he didn’t remember replacing it there. At least it remained. That was something he could never afford to lose. Also making it through the trip were Ebony and Ivory, twin guns safely holstered.

He walked quickly, surveying the immediate area. Those strange demons hadn’t brought him back to the demon world, which he had been expecting. This was a quiet place. Quiet, until he came across the line of people waiting to enter the most magnificent gate Dante had ever seen. There were two trees framing it, lit from below. They were totally fabricated, and the gems and metals used in their leaves sparkled beautifully with every slight breeze. Dante stared at it, transfixed for a good while until he realized he was leaving himself wide open for attack. He moved on.

Who were these people? And why were they all lined up to go through this gate? Dante could not tell what was behind it. The walls around it were very tall, curving upwards in a way that led him to believe they were part of massive domes. ‘A domed habitat? Definitely not the demon world.’

He moved closer to the line. ‘Someone here has to have an idea of what the hell is happening. Ah, good. They have women in this world. Pretty women, at that.’ He found a girl to his liking and touched her on the shoulder. “Excuse me, miss, but do you know where we are?”

The woman gave him a look as if he were stupid. “This is the great Vanaheim gate, leading into the jewel of Paixao.”

“Pie show?” Dante looked confused. The hell? People were lining up to see a pie show? Crazy!

“Yes, Paixao. You need to wait in line like all of us do.” She backed away from him. “Although they could use less of your kind inside.”

What was that supposed to mean? Dante was seconds away from pressing one of his guns against the woman's temple and asking her to repeat herself. 'Hold on, wait. Not the best way to make a first impression.' “I don’t think you meant that to come out the way it did, but I’ll forgive you this time.” Maybe he could punch her instead. Nah, not worth the effort. He decided to leave her alone, giving her the coldest stare instead, and he decided to jump the line. ‘There’s no way I’m waiting all that time to see what’s so special in there. If it’s a pie show, then goody. I’ll have something to eat. But if there are more racist fucks inside, I’ll be more than happy to show them just how loveable demons can be.’ Dante left the rude girl and moved further down the line towards the front.

There was a female greeter at the gate behind a booth. When she saw Dante, she didn’t even look perturbed. “Sir, you need to wait in line like everyone else. We do not tolerate line jumpers at the Vanaheim gate.”

“Oh, I think you’ll make an exception for me.” He stood with his hands on his hips, which pushed his coat back enough to show that he was well armed. Talking with the lady in line had put him in a bad mood, and suddenly shooting something didn’t seem like a bad idea.

The gate woman closed her eyes wearily for a moment, then carried on to perform her duties. Obviously someone strong-arming through a line was not a novel experience for her. “All right, sir. What’s your name?”

They needed his name at this gate? Ah, so what. He didn’t intend on seeing some pie show for very long anyway. He’d be in and out. “Dante Sparda.”

The woman dutifully recorded his name, then offered him a small grey rectangular device. Dante recognized it as some kind of computer. “What is this? I don’t want to buy anything!”

“It’s not for sale. It’s complimentary.” The woman forced a plastic smile. “Please accept it. It will be helpful for the duration of your stay here.”

Dante was very confused, but he took the device anyway. “Uh, thanks…” He took it uncertainly. “How much is admission, anyway?”

“There is no such thing as gate admission. Paixao opens her arms to anyone and everyone.” Her expression added silently, even those such as you. “Please proceed. You are holding up the line.”

Dante gave the woman one more look and walked into the world of Paixao. The gate had been a good indication of the world. Everything was indoors, though the top of the dome was barely visible because of its height. Also immediately noticeable was how everything was fabricated, just like the trees at the gate. The grass may have been green, but its sheen was not organic or natural. Dante moved closer to investigate it. It was as fake as the gate lady’s smile.

And as far as he could tell, by scent and by sight, this was no pie show. There were no stands set up anywhere. This was some domed city, not a country fair as he’d thought. Maybe they didn’t say "pie show." Maybe it was something else entirely. But as to what that may have been, he hadn’t the foggiest.

‘And what is this device she gave me?’ Dante, out of the way from the stream of entering people, decided to investigate. It was some kind of small computer. He’d seen similar in the stores of the city, but they weren’t free. This one appeared to be some sort of diary. Other functions included a built-in network, which linked his device with many others. Users' thoughts were visible to everyone. He didn’t recognize any names, though, as entries were filed under usernames. Also very handy was a map. Dante would use it to see if there really were any pies in the pie show…which was a much bigger place than he’d originally thought.

It was time to go exploring. Surely this place had some devils that needed eradication just as badly as those in his world did.
