He had no reason to think she wouldn't free him, scooting forward a couple times and turning his back to her so she could hopefully untangle whatever had tangled up and free him.

Feeling her tug his scarf tighter, however, had been more than a little unexpected. His eyes jolted wide, as he turned his head to look at her, looking bewildered. "Mom?!" By the time he'd started to get onto his knees to try to scramble away from her, of course not really realizing there was no point to even trying, she was already done.

"M-Mom...!" he protested, turning to look up at her--but he only managed a glance. "Gaaah!" He cried out as he lost balance on his knees, and rather spectacularly face-planted onto the ground instead. Muffled curses quickly followed.
