The meerkat's lame attempt to lie his way out motivated Hei to keep going in his friendly approach as Li. How many times had Hei come up with similarly lame excuses to maintain his cover? Plenty.
This African mammal could definitely speak like the hyena could, so, it could be assumed that many, if not all, around the city were capable of human-like speech. (Was that something that just occurred in Paixao? He had no idea.) There was the question if the meerkat knew the hyena who gave Hei reason enough to feel uneasy--but not now. Only when it was convenient. Asking about his friend would also have to wait.
Stretching. Right, Hei mused to himself as Li looked a little confused at first. "If you say so. But it almost looked like you wanted to look inside." Smiling again, almost about to laugh lightly once more. "You're not in trouble if you were. I couldn't put you on the spot for that."
There came a slight pause as he was gradually slipping further into character. Hei thought and incorporated something else to say, to help lessen the tension emitting from the meerkat. "I mean, it's understandable to have that curiosity." He crafted that last statement to be a little awkward on purpose, to express that Li was absolutely harmless.
Although, if Hei couldn't ease him long enough to engage in any sort of friendly discussions, then he'd let the meerkat go free without incident. Forcing him into doing something would be wrong.
