Character(s): Vanitas and Joshua
Content: God and darkness incarnate. This should end well.
Setting: the Elysian Fields
Time: Week 31, evening.
Warnings: Likely a WHOLE LOT OF EPIC VIOLENCE, MONSTER SHOWDOWNS, AND SHINEY POWERS. Several acres of the fields will be utterly destroyed for some time.
White grasses did not dim with the setting of the sun. Their blue radiance remained as if to remind the world of the sun's glow until morning came again. Its inhabitants matched well, glowing themselves. Tiny light particles floated down with tranquil slowness, affected slightly by the soft breeze that caressed the area. The area was eerie but serenely beautiful.
And far too bright.
Lumens across several acres lifted their heads, revealing their hiding spots before baring their teeth or setting back their ears. With little hesitation they dashed forward, closing in on one target. Through their fields and amongst his own self-made conflagration strolled a boy in a mask. The glowing grass withered and burned, contorting itself into dark dust and charcoal. The lights in the air were invaded by black ash. Attacking lumens were quickly dispatched, their light evaporating into the coming night. The silence had been shattered, and peace had been dethroned for chaos.
And it was all done with a casual effortlessness.

He'd been looking around and honestly hadn't seen much before he spotted what appeared to be quite a bit of destruction. Well, there's the darkness he was looking for, apparently. Never one to just ignore an opportunity when he saw one, Joshua wasted no time in getting the masked boy's attention.
"Well, don't you look all dark and foreboding," he chimed with a girlish giggle, pushing his hair back, "Destroying poor innocent plant life, tsk tsk. I'm sure someone's not going to be very happy with you."
no subject
"So what. You can't please everyone." He hesitated a moment, taking note of something. By the time he'd fought Ventus the last time in the Keyblade Graveyard, he'd had gained some skill in sensing light and darkness in his environment. Noticing the light practically dripping from him, Vanitas began to approach. A confident swagger could be seen in his stride.
"This ain't a spectator sport. Though something tells me you're a special little Princess."
Not far away, but within sight, a few Unversed stand over Lumens fading into sparks of light. They are one of many.
would it be alright if he 'scanned' vanitas? basically means he would read his surface thoughts.
But it was surprisingly hard to tell the difference between the two. Interesting. This was going to be fun.
"Oh, but I was so enjoying watching," he said, standing his ground and sarcasm dripping from his voice, "I mean, really, setting grass on fire? Could you possibly get any less creative?" It was pretty lame, as far as destruction went. Joshua could think of so many more interesting ways to destroy things.
Sure, I'll put his thoughts in italics.
"Like I was here to be creative," he shrugged, gesturing with his Keyblade. "This is just to pass the time."
Behind the masked boy, a good distance off, a large, feline-like creature sprung from the grass, running full-tilt and spreading its wings. The white creature lunged, half in flight, with teeth beared and claws unsheathed at Vanitas.
(There was the faintest flicker of emotion, but it was pure hatred.)
Several small Floods zipped through the air, sending the Lumen to the ground. The three made short work of the creature, letting it languish into light.
"What about you. There are monsters in these fields." Like me. "You must have a death wish."
The Unversed eyed the light-haired youth. Their small movements were as quick and fleeting as a bird's.
no subject
He watched impassively as the Lumen was torn apart, and his only response to the Unversed was a snort when Vanitas called them 'monsters.' Please, they seemed to be about the same level as Noise. Hardly anything to worry about it. Still, the boy had included himself in the batch of monsters, which, while more accurate, led to some questions. He smiled with an obviously false and rather mocking sweetness. "Oh, but don't we all?" he replied, a playful lilt to his voice now, "Living itself is having a death wish." Alright, so he was technically already dead. But many people would say he had a death wish anyway.
This would be the part where Vani starts getting his *** kicked.
"Oh great, a wannabe philosopher trying to be deep. Whatever," he shrugged. "But. Since you just pleaded guilty..."
Vanitas raised his Keyblade over his head, and a bright white glow appeared at the tip. Was it light? But where there is light, there is darkness, and the darkness made itself quickly known. At the tip, forcing the light that surrounded it back formed an orb of intense dark energy made of swirling purple, blue and black. The immediate air around it shimmered with heat.
And with a sudden, split second move he aimed it straight for the newcomer, shooting it off with the speed of a canon and enough force to have a notable kickback. "...WISH GRANTED!"
hooray! the fun begins!
Joshua watched, impassively, as the light and the darkness grew. Well, at least he had an idea of how light and darkness actually worked. He just stood there, during the boy's rather dramatic presentation. So little finesse. Well, for all Joshua knew it might have been extraordinary in his world, but to Joshua it was just outlandish and a waste of energy.
A nice thing about having powers to reign in the dead of an entire city meant that a little boy like this could hardly phase him. The 'teen' smirked, simply shifting himself out of the way. To Vanitas, it probably appeared as if he hadn't moved at all. "Oh, you're quick, aren't you?" he said playfully, "Not fast enough, apparently. Still, I suppose I can play with you for a little while. Sound be fun~"
no subject
Vanitas unleashed a malevolent chuckle. Maybe this isn't a waste of my time, then.
"I don't play well with others." Vanitas took up a readied stance, waiting to see if this light-oozing kid had any surprises. He motioned with his fingers. "What're you so afraid of?"
no subject
Without any sort of flourish or even much of an indication that he was doing anything, Joshua summoned his very entry-level powers. No reason to go full strength on this one, after all. Large objects starting falling around Vanitas, cars, bikes, vending machines. Their intent was to crush him, but if they missed they would vanish moments later.
no subject
Those words came just a second before a car crashed, nose-first, right in front of Vanitas and hiding him from view ever so briefly. That is, until it fell backwards onto where Vanitas was standing. There was a brief silence as the totaled car simply laid there upside-down.
The fender clattered to the ground.
And just as suddenly, a cloud of dark energy shot out from underneath the vehicle right at the other, sliding along the ground as smooth as a snake and as fast as a shark.
no subject
That cloud of darkness wasn't very impressive, but it seemed like this boy was at least trying (which was more than Joshua could be saying- he hadn't done anything even mildly draining yet) so he had a couple of options. He could dodge, or he could put up an invisible wall that Vanitas would undoubtedly run in to- it wasn't a normal wall, after all. He could also do both, but there was no need for overkill. An unbreakable wall of Soul would work just fine.
no subject
The cloud continued to shoot forward, but when it hit the wall, it didn't slow down. Nice trick. Instead, it followed the contour of the wall, trying to find a way in. A single gap...
no subject
Joshua snorted quietly to himself, playing with his phone and not even looking at the cloud of darkness. Trying to find a hole wouldn't work, and the wall itself seemed endless- reaching out to the edges of the field and as high as the clouds. It was something designed to stop people from getting through, and it was very good at doing that. Still, Joshua supposed he could up his own offense a little bit.
The boy behind the wall began levitating slightly off the ground behind the wall, arms out to his sides as he hung there. Though the post at least hinted that he was doing something a bit more, he clearly wasn't using that much power. Even when the actual attack came- beams of light crashed from the sky, hitting the cloud of darkness.
[[[Possibly-detectable-by-scan emotion here. More emotion than thought.]]]
One by one the beams rained down until all Vanitas could see was white.
That's interesting.
The cloud was amorphous. Light simply shoved it aside. As the light faded, the darkness emerged from the subtle shadows in footprints and beneath rocks to reform the cloud. There was no point staying in that form, since that'd be boring. If he keeps hiding behind that wall, two can play that game if I've got to.
There were other ways to avoid that attack if he so desired.
Vanitas leaped from the ground, instantly shooting a barrage of fireballs at the wall, testing for any weaknesses. The moment he landed, darkness rolled down from his body and seeped into the ground.
[[[Pride and loathing.]]]
no subject
Hm, well, that didn't appear to be working. Still, when he had a more solid form then it should do something... unless he was just immune to light, which wouldn't make much sense.
Joshua was quickly getting bored as well, taking the opportunity of the attack (fireballs? interesting.) to move out behind the wall. It hadn't broken it, Joshua had let it fade, but depending on how much the boy cared he might now notice that. He simply moved out of the way, not attacking for the moment. He wanted to see how little power he could get away with using, after all, and if he could get the boy to show all his tricks...
no subject
Vanitas watched the fireballs carefully, ready to pinpoint any weak spot. Or if not, to try one last thing. Fireball after fireball made impact with the wall, creating small flattened explosions. The last one, however, though it still hit, the explosion was more rounded, like it had only grazed something.
Bingo.
Vanitas lept through the area the last explosion had gone through, using darkness to rush at his opponent. With sheer hatred he stabbed at the other, and should that miss, he slashed. The slash, however, cut a swatch out of the air, quickly filling it with dark energy that sliced towards the other like a scythe.
The darkness released into in the ground was spreading fast.
no subject
Deciding he might as well give the boy a taste of what he was really dealing with, Joshua shook his head. "Mm, that's getting annoying. Let's slow you down, shall we?" He twisted the space around the boy, slowing him and all the magic he would be casting down quite a bit. He could try as hard as he wanted to go faster, but he would still be going at a snail's crawl until Joshua let him go. Which would be rather soon after he was hit with several beams of light- Joshua wanted to see if that had an effect on him when he was substantial.
(Vanitas gets to act next turn, then.)
What the--
The light cut through Vanitas, the twisted time letting out slow grunts of pain as they impacted. The beams were so intense they shone right through him. And the light filled him with an even greater drive to fight, a potent combination of adrenaline laced with darkness.
NOW
Vanitas fell slowly, but still gripped his Keyblade. He hit the ground, but amazingly, his body laid still -- perfectly still -- without so much as his body bouncing off the charred ground a bit. His foot did not fully touch the soil
But as Vanitas fell, about a half dozen Floods, the remainder of the ones that had fought the Lumens, zipped and zagged at the light-haired boy. Their intent was to restrain him, but an attack would do just as well. As fleeting emotions, they were somewhat subject to how they felt at the time.
And that was when the darkness manifested. Not all of it came at once, but most of it rose and incarnated themselves in various forms around the pale boy. The largest by far was a rotund-looking creature with a valve on the back. Despite its body, it moved as if it were much lighter than it appeared. Another was a large, blue jellyfish-like monster with spikes. It lacked the delicacy true jellyfish had. Behind and on either side, a good distance away, looked like little white radishes with odd faces. And floating far behind was a large purple medicine bottle.
They took no time in attacking.
The Tank Toppler deflated, using the air shooting out to propel itself at the enemy at an impressive speed. Should it miss, like a balloon it could turn quickly. Extending its legs, the Blobmob spun fast, planning to flail its opponent thoroughly. The Vile Phial approached only briefly, but just long enough to spew poison from its top at the light-haired boy. While comfortably rooted, the two Mandrakes threw leaves as sharp as knives.
no subject
Still, his focus for the moment would have to be on the creatures. Pity, he never liked dealing with the smaller things. He mentally pulled around for some Soul to construct some Noise, but the energy he found was all rather far away and... upwards. Interesting. He'd have to work on that later, then. For now it appeared that he'd have to do this himself.
Joshua moved quickly, enough to dodge everything but the blast of poison (something he had not expected), which would prove to be... annoying. He'd rather get this done quickly, then. He focused on the Vile Phial first, the large objects returning and crashing down towards all the Unversed, but he was making extra sure to hit that one. And that balloon... thing, since it was charging towards him and he rather needed to concentrate.
Wasn't quite sure how to address the mandrakes, since long range damage is hard and rare.
Cars fell over the mandrakes... But as soon as the vehicles vanished, their little flattened leaves perked up and shook themselves out before resuming their barrage of fatal foliage. Sure, it always hurts grass to be flattened, but it would have hurt worse had they been uprooted. A second car dropped on one, and it vanished from sight more permanently.
The Tank Toppler and Blobmob were hit hard, but both reacted quite differently. The Blobmob after being smashed several times (and simply rising back up) split into two slightly smaller versions of itself. As those were hit, they too, divided, leaving a total of 4 smaller, but just as deadly, foes. The spikes on their domes elongated, and they spun like tops towards their enemy.
The Tank Toppler, by comparison, was quite different. Each time it was hit, it expanded a bit more. It almost seemed to like running face-first into a few attacks. After a few hits, it was huge and glowed an ominous orange while it rolled around, closer and closer until it was near Joshua. At that point, it exploded like a hydrogen blimp!
Everything about moving was so slow, even while reaching across space. But the very moment the last of his body had reached that in-between of that few yards, everything snapped back into place. Vanitas's pulse jackhammered with the adrenaline bottled up as he teleported right above Joshua and proceeded to bear down with all his strength. Even if he missed, giant ice crystals would spring up and grow from the ground.
no subject
Good. At least the boy couldn't claim he was pulling punches. Unlike some.
Joshua put up another wall between him and the creatures- the Tank Toppler in particular, and slipped out of the way of Vanitas's attack. Ice? That was new, at least. Though Vanitas's strategy, or lack thereof, was starting to grow old. If he didn't do something interesting soon, Joshua was going to have to find a good way to end it.
More objects fell from the sky outside the wall, aiming to get rid of the pesky creatures. Inside it, Joshua did nothing to attack. He just smiled and waved a little bit at the masked boy. Totally playful, not at all serious, and really not at all hurt.
no subject
Despite their best attempts, one by one the Unversed were dispatched. The small Blobmobs divided one last time before each of the eight were eventually dispatched as well.
At the wave, Vanitas simply laughed. "You're actually not all that bad." Though actually decently hurt, Vanitas was very good at fighting through any pain. He acted untouched, taking up a battle stance. "But is that all you got?" The boy knew he'd have to watch for those light beams, but should they arise, he was ready for the moment.
Wonder if anything can ricochet off that fake wall?
[[[Arrogance]]]
Darkness crawled at his feet and vanished, spreading discreetly and dissipating into the air, much like the other Unversed had when they were defeated.
no subject
He did hope it was something interesting.
no subject
Hmph. He's goading me on. Vanitas was smart enough to be wary of such an open invitation. Rather than taking a chance and attacking the old fashioned-way -- with a Keyblade -- Vanitas instead leapt high in the air, raining down sweeping dark lightning. As he landed, he immediately sent out a spray of ice shards. Wherever those shards hit instantly froze.

no subject
But perhaps it was time to take advantage of that invitation, despite the risk. It was at least more interesting than anything else.
Vanitas landed, standing in one place a moment. "Hm. Just standing there. Scared?" He stood still a few more seconds...
...Before the illusion vanished. He appeared behind Joshua, shooting several fireballs ahead of him as he rushed his opponent. A few fireballs intentionally missed, turning the surrounding glowing grasses into a conflagration.
...i always feel bad playing fight scenes with joshua, because he's a DAMN CHEATER
"I suppose I could up it a little bit..." he said vaguely, looking over his nails as one would check nail polish, looking up only to smirk at Vanitas with condescension dripping from his voice, "...but I really don't think you're worth it."
Eh, Vani needs a reality check. Though it probably won't work as intended...
"I really don't care what you think," Vanitas shrugged. The darkness below was stirring.
nothing with joshua ever does. XD
Still, even though the darkness was finally doing something again, Joshua's patience was wearing thin. As entertaining as this side trip was, he had other things he could be doing. So the next time Vanitas tried to move, he would find himself remarkably slowed, Joshua levitating slightly in the air.
"But sometimes," he continued, looking down at Vanitas, "you really just need to learn to listen to your betters." Light struck down from above, three pillars aimed directly at Vanitas.
[ooc: Also I am extremely amused by the mental picture of them facing off with Vanitas in full armor and Joshua in his nice clothes. XD]
no subject
This again? The moment he was slowed, he knew an attack was imminent, and began trying to teleport again. In an instant he mentally summoned up the darkness of his loathing that he'd released. It formed into a massive Unversed above him, ready to spring in any direction to attack or shield Vanitas.
The Trinity Armor was forced to the ground by the power of the light, it's feet crashing down on either side of the masked boy as it took the hits. Slowly it levitated again, eyes burning red. It rushed at Joshua, legs mysteriously vanishing. That darkness went elsewhere... However, the arms and torso moved to either side of Joshua, shooting a massive laser between them as they orbited the boy.
Vanitas stood still.
[OOC:... Actually, that is awesome lols!]
no subject
Okay, tell me if this isn't okay!
Maybe a decent opponent after all.
Then, finally, the last bit of him was freed through the teleport, refreshed as a breath of air after nearly drowning. He appeared a good thirty feet away from Joshua in the opposite direction. The masked boy unleashed a barrage of fireballs, yet at the same time, anyone with the ability to sense darkness would be able to feel it pouring off him at an alarming rate. He was also quick to dive to the ground, again becoming a cloud of darkness. At the same time, however, the alpha and beta portions of the Trinity Armor continued its pursuit and attack of Joshua, employing the same methods.
Darkness already in the area, however, joined by that of the omega armor, took new form in the tall glowing grasses. And it immediately shot out beams of light and darkness, streaking across the field. A beam of darkness was aimed directly for the casually dressed opponent, inflicting blindness for a few long seconds.
The light boy would open his eyes to see his own face smirking back at him, phone to his ear. Pages fluttered across the field as light shot down from the sky towards the real opponent.
Darkness became visible, so thick it flowed around the glowing grass like a black ground fog. In his current form, Vanitas blended right in.
[ooc: Destroying the pages reverts the Mimic Master to normal and then leaves it open for more damage. Until then it will copy any and all attacks either it or Vanitas have seen.]
no subject
Now that was interesting.
He knew himself well enough that it wouldn't be the best idea to defeat his doppelganger outright- sure, he could do it, but it would require using more effort than he was willing to. Still, cheap copy as it was, there had to be something he could do to get rid of it...
His eyes fell on the pages that certainly hadn't been there a moment before. There was a distinct possibility that they were linked to something, at least. As he'd gotten hit by one of the lasers when he'd been blinded, he hit the remaining armor with light to get it out of his way before blasting the papers, to see what that did.
If Angel Stars can use light, a Mimic Master should be able to...
However, the moment the last page was destroyed, the clone vanished, and instead a rather scholarly-looking Unversed appeared, complete with book. However, it didn't wait long before the book became swathed in flames, which the Mimic Master was quick to assault with.
Meanwhile, Vanitas slithered through the darkness, adding to it as he moved. Had they still been there, the pages would have been at least partially covered in it.
