Although on a more subtle side than Remus would have taken, he could see that Wolf was not ready to back down, or at least, faking that he wasn't about to back down. The pain that this thing had been able to inflict upon him was pretty bad, and as beaten up as he was, he wasn't in the best of shape to defend himself or his pride (if werewolves had pride) from his opponent.

Remus growled back, slowly backing away, step by step, but never turning his back to Wolf. He didn't want to be beaten, but his instincts were starting to tell him to flee for now and fight another day.
