So that was what that was. Valerie figured there ought to be one last thought in before she tried to run for cover, but she knew it was too late. This was a direct hit, and there simply wasn't any time.

Light exploded around her and she felt herself lifted high in the air from the impact at first, then back to the ground a second later. Pain dulled her head and rocked all over her body, and even hitting the ground her body still twitched. She grunted, and for a moment, just a moment, she wanted to stay down. What was she even doing here? She was supposed to be helping Danny, and now Misha, not acting like the stupid vigilante she made the mistake of portraying every time she hunted ghosts! But now it was all so pointless and here she was about to be beaten by someone that had nothing to do with why she was here. If she was killed now, would Danny even care? Would anyone?

GET UP.
The command came, swift and hard, and while she knew it was her voice somewhere inside her, it boomed, sounding dark somehow. Valerie stirred, and reared her legs back and leaped to her feet. The helmet was off now, and she looked at Larxene, regarding her now.

Do NOT acquiesce to defeat now. You fight for him, and you will find out what you need to know.

Valerie could feel something trailing behind her, and she didn't want to look. It was the thing darkness still chasing her from her dream, even in Dan's dream. It always scared her, and it always seemed familiar. Right now though, it wasn't scaring her as much as dying was, and she turned to Larxene, and spit blood from her mouth.

"Let's get this over with."
