There had been a heart-stopping moment when the door to the storage closet had opened. Akira had glimpsed the desperate face of a blonde woman before she was dragged off, screaming the whole way. And then she was silent. The door was left open, though. Akira couldn’t move to close it. It would give away his position if he did, so he let it stay as it was.
Akira breathed quietly and slowly, controlling his breath as best he knew how. He wondered why the white creatures didn’t come check this room. Maybe they thought the woman had come from there. Maybe the creatures tracked by scent and they couldn’t detect him due to all the dusk, dampness, and heavy mothball stink of the tiny closet.
Whatever the reason, he was grateful for being overlooked.
He nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard a window break after a long, tense period of silence. He couldn’t help it anymore. He sneezed, clenching his teeth and making it as soundless as he could. He froze, waiting for the creatures to come investigate.
After an eternity of holding his breath, it seemed nothing was going to happen. He waited until he could take it no more, and let out the breath in relief. He then slipped out of the closet carefully, checking left and right before proceeding. Immediately he felt ridiculous. The hallway was largely undisturbed, aside from the broken window down on one end. He saw no sign of the woman who had opened the closet. Did he imagine that? How strange.
He wasn’t going to stick around and wait for the creatures to return. He needed to get out of the building. It was more like a dead end than a safe haven now. He ran for the stairs, careful to make his steps as light as possible. Maybe Cordell was okay too, but he wasn’t going to count on that. He lingered in the stairwell, listening to make sure it was safe for him to cross the room to the door.
