Change of Scenery [complete]
Character(s): Akira
Content: A new section of AREA:RAY? Unlikely, but Akira seems to think so upon entering Paixao.
Setting: Muspelheim gate area
Time: week 2 - night
Warnings: None
It was something he needed to get used to, one way or another. That’s how this… competition was set up. Anyone could attack at any time. That was fine. What wasn’t fine was how those others had reacted. Rain poisoning. It had to be. An overdose of that stuff could be lethal, and would probably send the victim into spasms, much like those he’d already seen. As logical an explanation as any.
Back to the task at hand: tag gathering. No, wait. He had to go find that idiot. He’d been gone far too long already. And it wasn’t like he could sleep again, anyway.
Akira wandered along the basement level. It was mostly dark, and the open door from where he’d entered was the only light in the entire room. He saw glinting metal further in – a doorknob. He tested it with a quick twist. It seemed open. He pressed himself along the wall near the doorframe and pushed the door inward quickly. Anyone waiting there would likely get hit by the door or be befuddled by the lack of a target.
No one was there. After a few moments, Akira proceeded cautiously, knife in hand. He stepped through the door… and was suddenly outside.
Now, transitioning from a dank, murky basement to the outdoors was enough to give anyone pause, because not only was it completely unexpected, it was fully illogical. Not to mention impossible.
Akira narrowed his eyes. Where…how… WHAT?
He quickly looked behind him and was surprised to there was see no door at all. All he saw were a few broken stairs and part of a wall where there may have been a doorway once. Just ruins now, all falling to pieces. He looked around again. Maybe he was hallucinating. They had Rain in AREA:RAY, so who knew what else might be lying around. Some drugs could be dispersed into the air. Maybe he’d breathed something in along the way. Possible, all things considered. Easy crowd control at the least.
It was a good way to throw off his guard, though, so even more likely this was some new experimental area of AREA:RAY. Even though the place smelled nothing like it. Put simply, the place didn’t reek of blood. It was also very quiet and peaceful. In addition, there were huge domed structures not too far from his position. There was absolutely nothing like them in AREA:RAY, in Toshima, or anywhere he’d ever seen. Igura was certainly pulling out all the stops with this one.
Keisuke would have gone in the domes. He wouldn’t want to be so exposed in such a broad, open area. So that’s where Akira would begin looking.
As he approached, Akira could make out huge gates in the shape of flames. Someone had a flair for the dramatic. No matter. There were people waiting outside of them, though, all formed in a nice little line. And… they mostly wore odd clothing. It was like they’d stepped out of some old-fashioned book. There were men and women and even children in the line. That on its own didn’t fit Igura. What’s more, he saw none of them wore tags. Non-combatants? That was a new twist in things. He’d have to watch who he targeted from now on.
The line was short and fast moving. Everyone had to check in at the gate before they entered, and Akira was no exception. He gave the gatekeeper his name. Maybe they needed to check it against the official Igura roster.
In return, the gatekeeper gave him a small metal rectangle. He smiled pleasantly as he handed it over. “Welcome to Paixao, Akira. May I have the next person in line, please?”
Akira looked at the metal thing with wide eyes. Was it a computer? He doubted they existed anymore. Was this some special stash that had survived the war? Either way, it was handy to have. He’d figure out how to use it later on. For now, he had an idiot to track down. He proceeded into the city, determined as ever.
