And there it was, the soothing voice Hijikata Toshizou had used in his rarest of moments. As Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi - also sometimes known as the shadow Commander, thanks to the fact that he practically ran everything in the Shinsengumi - he had to be every inch the devil that the men needed, from making harsh decisions to enforcing them with an almost-brutal firmness.
And yet...
Okita Souji knew that it was only a veneer that he had forced himself to take on. He knew Hijikata since the Shieikan days, and while he had always been a bit of a brute, Okita knew that it had always been a sort of an act.
Now, however...
Hijikata was right. What had he been angry about? He was still for a few moments, the older man's large, intimidating presence had the ability to neutralize the fangs of the wolf, even his own.
But...
Why wasn't he surprised at Okita's drastic change in state? Why hadn't he raised an eyebrow?
Perhaps this was an imposter?
No... Okita's sharpened sense of smell could pick up the scent of tobacco and autumn leaves, the way Hijikata had always smelt...this was him.
The doubt fading away quickly, the hollow simply shook his head, his voice coming out through the mask as a growl. The anger was creeping up behind him, dark and uncomprehending, and Okita didn't know why. Was it the pain? The death? Had he really died? Why was the pain gone?
Who was the one who caused it? Did he remember...?
Ah...yes....
"Aizen..." The name almost enraged him all over again as it spilled from his lips in an almost feral snarl. "He killed me. And I became...this.</i?"
He had no idea what his current form was, but it disturbed him enough to be confused, lost, and for some reason, furious.
